ウィキペディア・ウィクショナリー・ウィキブックス・ウィキクォート・ウィキソース・ウィキニュースには、中立的な観点 (neutral point of view; NPOV) という厳しい方針があります（ウィキバーシティ、ウィキボヤージュ、ウィキスピーシーズ、ウィキメディア・コモンズ、多数の「裏方」プロジェクトやここメタにはありません）。事実に対する見方や解釈には様々なものが存在しますが、特定の観点を推したり殺いだりするのではなく、事実を公正かつ中立的に提示するよう目指すことで、プロジェクトの使命がもっともよく果たされるとNPOVは述べています（言及すべき観点の選び方については限界があり、これを巡って揉めることもあります）。この方針は冒頭に挙げた各プロジェクトの全言語版に存在しますが、プロジェクトや言語によって細部は顕著に異なっています。
Writing in NPOV style requires recognising that even widely held or widely respected points of view are not necessarily all-encompassing.
While NPOV is an ultimate goal in writing an article, it is difficult to achieve immediately as a single writer. It is thus sometimes regarded as an iterative process (as is wiki writing in general), by which opposing viewpoints compromise on language and presentation to produce a neutral description acceptable to all.
This might be viewed as an adversarial system, but hopefully a polite one. Editors are expected to approximate NPOV to the best of their ability and welcome improvements that have been brought by others in good faith; a failure of the system can become an edit war, in which two or more parties dig in and refuse to compromise, instead reverting each other's changes outright.

汎用の百科事典というものは、中立的な観点に立って表現された知識を組み合わせて集めたものです。百科事典の執筆においては、中立的でない特定の観点に立つことは最大限避けるべきです。
中立的な観点は、賛成者も反対者も承諾できる、事実や考えの書き方を探ります。もちろん、100％の承諾を得るのは不可能です。世界には特定のイデオロギーの信奉者もいて、自分の主観を強く主張するばかりで、他の意見に一切耳を貸さないような人もいます。我々にできるのは、観点が異なっても合理的に考えられる人々が承諾できる書き方を探ることだけです。[1]私の意図を分かりやすくするために、いくつかの例を挙げてみましょう。
1. 百科事典の記事では、執筆者がそう信じていたとしても、企業を犯罪者扱いするべきではありません。そのように考える人もいる、と書くべきであり、その人たちの考えの理由も添えられるべきであり、反対意見の人たちの意見も同時に提示するべきです。[2]
2. 百科事典の記事では、レッセフェールの資本主義が最良の社会システムだと論じるべきではありません。（中略）その観点を信奉する人の論と、その観点を受け入れない人の論とを提示するべきです。[3]
百科事典的に書くためには、物事が「どうであるか」を書くのではなく「どうであると信じられているか」を書くのが近道かもしれません。このような言い方が主観論的、または集産主義的、帝国主義的な言い方に聞こえていましたら、私にそのことを訊いてください。それは誤解だと思うからです。人が何を信じているかは客観的事実に属することであり、中立的な観点に立って「そのこと」を提示するのはまったく困難なことではありません。[4]
