From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

(*SV)

This is an attempt to build on the sunflower concept from the contest page, using an FDL'd sunflower photo provided by User:Anthere. The [[ ]] of course represent one of the most fundamental concepts of Wikipedia, linking. On the other hand, they also symbolize prison bars or other restraints which the flower breaks out of. The flower itself represents the diversity of content on Wikipedia, the constant growth and also the wildness. I've added the subtitle just to get the right dimensions.

You are encouraged to play with this logo! If you use GIMP, just download the XCF file and edit the layers accordingly. Alternatively there's also larger version available.

I love it !!!!!!!!!

And love the comment as well. See, brain is a marvelous thing :-)

In a final version, we should need to apply a local filter to make the border of the petals more sharp. Or rework it slightly the borders by hand. This is no problem but should be done for a tee-shirt version.

Good job !

I've added a variant above - which one is better? --Eloquence
I am not sure of the real difference at small size for the middle one. It is probably more visible at bigger size. Center darker (nice) but more blurry (less nice). You should decide on the high res big size perhaps, which one is better.
As for the one on the right, it is nice :-) but I must admit it troubles me a bit. When a sun flower is not ripe, the center is green, later, it is yellow orange, then ripe, it is black. shining white looks strange to me. But hey, why not ? Just put the two of these on the logo page :-)
How about the blue variant? It's also slightly sharper, and the brackets are not as dominant. --Eloquence 23:38 26 Jul 2003 (UTC)

I did a variant (fifth from left) -- did something different with the brackets rather than just work like prison bars -- modified the color a little bit to demonstrate a way to maybe spice it up -- maybe one of the quadrants can incorporate some of those 0010100101001101's that seem to work -- conceptwise. Youve got two concepts merging here -- fine. But the [[brackets]] are not readily identifiable to non-pedians, and the flower means what exactly?? Stevertigo 20:44 31 Jul 2003 (UTC) P.S -- and since these should just be designs to allow for various language texts -- I just left some whitespace.

Now, that's probably the best logo concept - cute and neutral (no letters). We'd just have to make sure that sunflowers don't offend anyone ;-) Taw 00:53 3 Aug 2003 (UTC)

I have a problem with the Sunflower logos. The Sunflower is the symbol of Green parties worldwide. I feel if we adopt this logo, people could think Wikipedia is a project of the Green party or we endorse their policies. I could see Democrats wanting the donkey or Republicans wanting the elephant, UK Labour party supporters wanting the red rose, UK Tories wanting the Torch or UK LibDems wanting the yellow bird. Political symbols are too charged just like religious symbols...

This one seems to me to be far and away the best of all the suggestions. It is simple, meaningful and cheerful. The power and simplicity of "wikifying" brackets are the key to wikipedia's success. The double square brackets are elegant, in both the functional and aesthetic senses of the word. The symbolism of a vibrant, living flower bursting through them, makes the perfect symbol for wikipedia, in my opinion. However, since the sunflower really does appear to be a party political symbol ([1]), it seems we will have to use a different, politically neutral, flower. I'd like to suggest Cosmos. This is a very attractive flower [2], quite as cheerful as a sunflower, and the notion of wikifying the Cosmos would seem to me to have something going for it! GrahamN 20:29, 6 Sep 2003 (UTC)
Thanks for your nice comments, Graham. I agree that the sunflower is overused, and Cosmos is very pretty (and nicely ambivalent). Does anyone have any public domain / FDL picture we could use?—Eloquence 21:15, 6 Sep 2003 (UTC)

It's nice, but:

  • A photo in a logo is a bad idea. It don't scales well.
  • Unless is your own photo, we must be sure it's not coryrighted.
  • Uses too much colours. Will be very very dificult to have decent T-Shirts, or other comercials with a photo-based logo.

It is mentionned somewhere, but I will repeat it in case it was not clear. Erik first idea was built on a cp picture. He did not submit it for the flower was copyrighted.

I took many pictures of sunflowers one day about a trimester ago with my own camera (see this for a little personal artwork on some of the picts). I extracted one of the flower of one of my personal pictures, for Erik to be able to do his logo.

All the pictures I upload on wikipedia are under GNU license (unless specified. A couple of times, I uploaded cp pictures to be used as support of understanding with other users. The cp state was mentionned, I keep track of the pictures to be sure they aren't used, then I delete them when they are of no more use). The flower being used in that logo is released under Wikipedia standards. User:Anthere

Kikou Ant !!!
A propos de "bébètes", as tu vu mon criket ? Lui, je l ai pris sous *toutes* les coutures :-), mais évidemment ici ce n'est pas moi qui l'ait photographié. Dès que j'ai accès à ma bécane, je te met l'abeille :-)

I love this logo! Ilyanep

One user submit on my page User talk:Oliezekat/Miwiki logo 5 to design Miwiki with your logo... Do you want I do it ? ...Or, you can use picture of Miwiki of this page fr:Utilisateur:Oliezekat/Miwiki

If you are agree, send me hires of your logo to kat@olid.fr.st

Oliezekat 22:19, 9 Sep 2003 (UTC)

It is me! :P I suggest "Miwiki puts a flower into the double bracket". It should be fun! -Wshun 21:30, 10 Sep 2003 (UTC)

My favorite one would be Image:EloquenceSunflowerNew-Small.png with smaller brakets

Here's a photo of a sunflower in my partents' garden: Image:Sonnenblume.jpg. Just in case Erik or someone else wants to create another variant of the logo with a different flower. --Kurt Jansson 23:57, 9 Sep 2003 (UTC)

the flower is truely beautiful Kurt ! More mature. I will keep it somewhere. I would like to select different varieties over time. User:anthere

A foto of a sunflower with brackets around it. (gardening, nature in a cage...?) The dove coming out of a book seems to be easier to explain. How about taking the sunflower image that is not a foto? user:nichtich

The pixelation around the sunflower in the large version is somewhat noticeable. Is there way of alpha blending it out? Pde

My choice for the logo. It's warm and sensitive, very attractive and livens up ones spirit. 'EloquenceSunflowerBlue-Small.png' is the best version since the yellow sunflower shouts out from the dark blue brackets and text. Great work wikipedians! Usedbook 11:47, 16 Sep 2003 (UTC)
