  1. Text is hard to read, sends the wrong message.  fetchcomms 23:39, 10 November 2010 (UTC)
  2. I Hope this was done for the lolz, this can't be considered seriously. I do think its funny though. Theo10011 14:45, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
  3. Funny, but not appropriate.  ono  01:09, 12 November 2010 (UTC)
I undid your archiving. This is an open discussion. There is nothing wrong with leaving it open.  fetchcomms 03:18, 12 November 2010 (UTC)

  1. Good idea, but use a Gill Sans font (WMF standard) or something slightly prettier.  fetchcomms 23:40, 10 November 2010 (UTC)
  2. Wow, really like this one........a lot. Great Design, great concept, we should use this idea for other pics.Theo10011 14:31, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
Will adapt when I have time. I have a few more in the works, including an animated one.  ono  01:10, 12 November 2010 (UTC)

Eye contact[edit]

Submitted on: 2010-11-10
Comments:

  1. We already have Jimmy's pic in the current banner, I don't think a close-up is a different approach. Plus, too much eye contact is considered creepy. Theo10011 14:43, 11 November 2010 (UTC)

  1. Thinking in Japanese "market". Emijrp 12:49, 10 November 2010 (UTC)
  2. Nah... His face is too small here and I don't think him in Japanese dress means much. I mean, he wont dress up like a cowboy to appeal to Texas. :P  fetchcomms 23:45, 10 November 2010 (UTC)
  3. No, too many double-entendres there.Theo10011 14:31, 11 November 2010 (UTC)

Red[edit]

Proposed by: Emijrp. On scope? n/d. Tested? n/d. Income: n/d. Discarded: n/d.

Submitted on: 2010-11-10
Comments:

  1. Yes, but with a plain background, make the text stick out. Use a smoother, more engaging font and message. Maybe quote from Jimmy's appeal?  fetchcomms 23:46, 10 November 2010 (UTC)
  2. Red background is really loud, plus Jimmy's pic looks different and somewhat corporate. Theo10011 14:33, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
To tone down the red background, maybe fade out into black (with white text) a little after Jimmy's body physically ends in the shot...? That was hard to describe, hope you get what I meant. Killiondude 23:12, 13 November 2010 (UTC)

  4. With an appropriate caption, this would be lovely. :) —Clementina talk 04:47, 21 November 2010 (UTC)

Proposed by: Emijrp. On scope? n/d. Tested? n/d. Income: n/d. Discarded: n/d.

Submitted on: 2010-11-10
Comments:

  1. Overused quote, which may not be bad, but the background can be more engaging. Why use the satellite image of the earth closer up as the whole bg, not a star field?  fetchcomms 23:48, 10 November 2010 (UTC)
  2. Agreed, very overused, the text and the pic concept.Theo10011 14:34, 11 November 2010 (UTC)

Comments:

  1. Really Like the Idea, Sage. Might I suggest replacing "your donation" with "your contribution", or "your contribution completes the puzzle..." since we don't want to convey that we only need financial support, plus it might fit in with the contribute campaign. Theo10011 14:37, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
    I replaced "donation" with "contribution".--Ragesoss 15:19, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
  2. Ooh yeah. Just tweak the logo part so it's less bright and less glaring. I like the idea a lot.  fetchcomms 16:54, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
  3. Yes, perfect, brilliant. This needs a special landing page with some explanation, though. --Yair rand 22:48, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
  4. Awesome, love it. I agree with Yair rand on the landing page though, Sadads 01:31, 13 November 2010 (UTC)
  5. I have to say, this is probably one of the best ones here. It's really good. The alignment of the text and image is perfect! Thanks, Rock drum (talk·contribs) 14:45, 14 November 2010 (UTC)
  6. I came up with this version more independently than you might think, but whatever, it's a collaborative process. The text pops more thanks to a black outline on some sides. I was trying to make it look like it was cut out of the wall paper, but it doesn't really come through. Even so, I think it's a nice refinement. HereToHelp (talk) 22:46, 15 November 2010 (UTC)
    Help us complete the puzzle.png
I prefer the copy on my version (which makes more explicit what the message is about), but I like the text style and the slight image tweaks you made.--Ragesoss 12:47, 16 November 2010 (UTC)

Comments:

  1. Needs more mention of monetary donations, although we do like new editors.  fetchcomms 16:55, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
I was thinking this would be for the post-goal contribution phase, where we do want to focus on new editors and such.--Ragesoss 16:57, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
OK, that sounds good for this one.  fetchcomms 18:45, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
  2. The image seems a tad-bit random in relation to wikipedia, I do understand the editor connection with it. how about "how will you contribute?" Vs. "what will you contribute", in relation to the image what sounds like a reference to an object.Theo10011 18:56, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
  3. Unfortunately I have to agree with Theo, the image doesn't quite say "Wikipedia" or the community or anything,Sadads 01:32, 13 November 2010 (UTC)

  • This is for MediaWiki.org --Ragesoss 15:50, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
  1. Maybe use "programmers" or "developers" instead of "coders", and soften the background so the text stands out more. But funny and I think it might work better than expected.  fetchcomms 16:56, 11 November 2010 (UTC)

Proposed by: Fetchcomms. On scope? n/d. Tested? n/d. Income: n/d. Discarded: n/d.

Submitted on: 2010-11-11
Comments:

  1. Interesting, not sure if it is a little too subtle at presenting the fundraiser, Sadads 01:33, 13 November 2010 (UTC)
  2. Why not first line: "I [heart] Wikipedia", second line: "do you?" Orionist 12:19, 22 November 2010 (UTC)
Heh—I suggested that as a text banner a long time ago. I like that, but it might seem a bit too pushy, as if people who don't donate just don't like WP, which is definitely not the case.  fetchcomms 01:12, 23 November 2010 (UTC)
I doubt anyone would be so quick to take offense. :P Whether it adds "Do you" or not, I like this banner very much. :) Great work! Clementina talk 09:03, 24 November 2010 (UTC)

Stay curious (Created)[edit]

Jimmy Banner Wikipedia Academy Forschungsbibliothek.png
Proposed by: Fetchcomms. On scope? n/d. Tested? n/d. Income: n/d. Discarded: n/d.

Submitted on: 2010-11-11
Comments:

  1. I like this one a lot. Maybe it should be "Be Curious." That's the one that tested strongest with a non-graphical banner. (I personal like "Stay Curious" better, but it performed a little bit under "Be Curious.")--Ragesoss 01:34, 13 November 2010 (UTC)
I was trying to see which one was better; guess I compared the wrong numbers. "Be curious" works for me.  fetchcomms 03:47, 13 November 2010 (UTC)
  2. I like the aesthetics of the banner and the slogan a lot. I think it may be worth testing if it gets click-through, and if so, designing an appeal especially around it. (I think the fact that Jimmy isn't named here makes it a suitable banner to test later in the fundraiser, when we've already been running his face a lot.)--Eloquence 23:45, 15 November 2010 (UTC)
  3. "Stay curious" feels pretty generic. (Or "stay thirsty," an ad for a beer.) I feel like there are a lot of places you could go with Jimbo examining a shelf full of books..... HereToHelp (talk) 05:58, 16 November 2010 (UTC)

Comments:

  1. Like it, but do we have any different birds?  ono  01:00, 12 November 2010 (UTC)
It was the first one I found at Commons :P I'd change it if you find some better picture. Diego Grez return fire 01:01, 12 November 2010 (UTC)
Perhaps one modeled after Corbeaux.svg?  ono  01:05, 12 November 2010 (UTC)
I would prefer a photograph instead of a drawing. Diego Grez return fire 01:16, 12 November 2010 (UTC)
  2. Not all birds are free (zoos, etc.). Maybe keep the image idea (although find a nicer pic to use; search commons:COM:FP) but reword it to say "Keep Wikipedia free. Please donate." or something like that.  fetchcomms 03:20, 12 November 2010 (UTC)
Obviously not all birds are free, but I'm sure you get the concept... Diego Grez return fire 20:46, 12 November 2010 (UTC) Why so Wikipedia-centric? Keep Wikimedia free. Diego Grez return fire 13:10, 13 November 2010 (UTC)

  1. It looks disordered imo. Could you perhaps move the "I am" at the right of the guy's head? Diego Grez return fire 01:18, 12 November 2010 (UTC)
  2. Blue text on blue bg is annoying. Also, picture has visible white outline, but the concept is good.  fetchcomms 03:22, 12 November 2010 (UTC)
  3. Hmmm... the way the text is ordered just makes it look a bit messy. Thanks, Rock drum (talk·contribs) 14:48, 14 November 2010 (UTC)

Submitted on: 2010-11-12
Comments:

  1. This is more interesting than too many pictures of Jimmy Wales and many persons love pugs. Ben Carcu 22:38, 12 November 2010 (UTC)
  2. I don't think it's that relevant, or that everyone will get it (although I understand it). And if I don't donate, I could still be a dog on the Internet.  fetchcomms 22:53, 12 November 2010 (UTC)
  3. Visually, it doesn't quite work. I think the background is a little too noisy for comfort. PeterSymonds 19:53, 13 November 2010 (UTC)
Sorry PeterSymonds I can not fix the background because I am blocked on Wikimedia Commons because my ISP uses a proxy. Ben Carcu 18:21, 15 November 2010 (UTC)
Also, I have another nitpick about this one. "Nobody knows you're a dog" implies anonymity. "Keep it that way" implies that if we don't get donations, we will no longer respect users' anonymity. Regardless of meaning, this is how it looks to me; and that really isn't a message we want to send. PeterSymonds 21:09, 15 November 2010 (UTC)
  4. I don't get it. What does this have to do with Wikimedia? --Yair rand 05:13, 14 November 2010 (UTC)
"On the internet no one knows you are a dog". No one has to know who edits Wikipedia. You can be anybody. Ben Carcu 18:21, 15 November 2010 (UTC)

    It doesn't. w:WP:CONTRIB.  ono  03:44, 13 November 2010 (UTC)
I don't get it. Aren't we trying to make banners to get people to donate? We aren't going to advertise the contribution team with centralnotices.  fetchcomms 03:49, 13 November 2010 (UTC)
Probably not meant for this, but if we meet our goal early, we'll switch to a contribution campaign.  ono  04:21, 13 November 2010 (UTC)
  2. if you change from "meet.." to "support..." you have a good chance to meet both goals, regards --Jan eissfeldt 11:39, 16 November 2010 (UTC)
  3. Why is meta on there? Nn123645 22:39, 20 November 2010 (UTC)
  4. Yeah, why include meta, Wikimania and MediaWiki? They're not really content projects. Most people wouldn't really be interested in them. Rock drum (talk·contribs) 19:01, 13 December 2010 (UTC)
Seeing as we're now switching to a contribution campaign, this banner could be a good idea. By the way, would this image be any better? I do realise that the Wikibooks icon is out of date (as is the Wikitionary one) but they could be changed. Regards, Rock drum (talk·contribs) 10:27, 4 January 2011 (UTC)

  3. Not a bad idea, but the puzzle globe looks really faded when it's submerged in blue like that, and the lettering on the left doesn't seem quite right. Emufarmers 21:34, 13 November 2010 (UTC)

In the United States, in most states, it is unlawful to use someone's image in advertising without their permission. See w:Personality_rights#United_States. This would be the same as Wheaties slapping an athlete on their box without the athlete's permission. (There is a distinction in American law between using someone's image for advertising purposes and using it for informational purposes. Even an image taken in public--which would be perfectly fine for an encyclopedia article--is not fine for an advertisement that suggests endorsement. Calliopejen1 15:33, 15 November 2010 (UTC)
    (1) It's not the country the photo was taken in that you have to worry about, it's any country you run the advert in. I may be wrong, but I think banners with clear "Donate now" statements are slightly less effective than banners without them. The "Let's keep it alive forever" was meant as a subtle reference to donating, but a stronger message may not hurt.  fetchcomms 17:38, 19 November 2010 (UTC)
I agree as far as slightly subtle statements, especially since "donate" will be appearing often enough. But as far as this particular banner, the candle looks mournful and the word "forever" implies that we will go under without donations, or that we won't be back again next year asking for them. HereToHelp (talk) 19:26, 19 November 2010 (UTC)

  1. The shadowing is unnerving- a hovering logo beside a person with no other background. Text on both of these would be poor grammar if read as one sentence, which is how I took it; I assume "Help us" is a heading, but it still jars at me nevertheless. sonia 07:31, 2 December 2010 (UTC)
Any suggestions to improve?.. MT0 16:26, 2 December 2010 (UTC)
Hmm, the color scheme with the red is quite eye-catching, and the font is good, but I think picking more visually related images that mesh better with each other and the message would make for an excellent banner. sonia 19:44, 2 December 2010 (UTC)

  1. "Help us" by itself seems like we're in trouble. If you combined the two parts to say "Help us keep knowledge free", that would work better, especially, as the access to knowledge is not free (I still need to pay my Internet bill!).  fetchcomms 03:51, 4 December 2010 (UTC)

The effectiveness of the banner benefits from most readers being annoyed at or wishing the banners to be gone as soon as possible. This factor, and the small amount of contribution requested, will encourage more donations. At the same time, it calls attention to the immense usage of the Wikipedia project. The information is from Sue Gardner's appeal. Sue Gardner's appeal makes a concession, that not all people will donate. I think this shouldn't be made, as it goes against the principle and purpose of the fund raising campaign and the instrument of banners.

Here are some suggestions for the appeal message:[edit]

The appeal should contain messages like "We depend on you to keep this resource...". However, care should be taken not to alienate readers, and give false impression of an exclusive body, as does the message "Help us...". Instead, readers should be made aware of their vital role as members of the public and beneficiaries of WF's projects in enabling the WF to serve its public mission.

The last sentence and ending note should be an appeal for contribution to a valuable cause to which Wikimedia Foundation's projects serve. It may adopt perhaps the style of appeals for child adoptions and medical donations- a noble and honorable act of giving - "Give the gift of..." as often encountered.

It will be useful to display some of the implementations and impact of Wikimedia projects, to the education of poor children in Africa for example, on the appeal page, and/or create a special display page.

I am inclined to believe that the effectiveness of a text banner will be greater in this case, and may serve to dispel a negative stereotype developed against them. But creativity in text sizes and arrangement, color and button can always be applied. I think in this case, it will be better if the "now" in "Donate now" is lower case.

Observations on interface with the general public:[edit]

The common approach in the fundraising campaign in appeal messages and proposed banners has been to educate them about Wikimedia projects and the community involved. Not that there is any problem with educating them on these matters, which are important in raising public awareness about the projects, but the principal issue lies in making the projects seem foreign and making people themselves feel like an outsider, which gives them uneasy feelings, especially to make monetary contribution.

The approach that should be adopted is to provide them with a basic understanding of what the Wikimedia projects are, what the Wikimedia Foundation is, what it does and its mission. But this should not be attempted during a fundraising campaign. Then the awareness of the public should be enhanced on the impact that the Wikimedia projects have in the outside community and in the world. The interface of the people with the Wikimedia projects can best be through the application, implementations, and broader impact of the Wikimedia projects in the world. During a fundraising campaign, these ought to be highlighted and people should know of their vital role in making it possible and to continue. If the Wikimedia Foundation is to advance itself, it also has to work in this area to find ever more applications of the Wikimedia projects and have a greater impact on the world. Partnerships, in which the WF has recently been interested, should have this object and should serve to further the WF in this direction.

It's very nice to see that a banner was designed like this. But I still think that asking just $1, referring to readers of Wikipedia rather than of the banner, and noting it will be over within hours will be more effective. However, with the banner that is running now: "If everyone reading this donated $5/ our fundraiser would be over today./ Please donate to keep (project) free. [Please help]", it may be worthwhile to run a trial with $1 and similarly small amounts in other currencies. And if that generates clicks, a trial may be run with the banner referring to "every reader", "every reader of Wikipedia" in Wikipedia's case. Another point to consider is as I suggested, a direct "Donate now" button.λόγος Idea → ✉ 03:03, 29 December 2010 (UTC)

Instead of using banners showing single persons such as Jimmy Wales or other wiki leaders it would appeal more to me (and most likely a lot of others) if there were banners showing wiki employees teams, i.e. a lot of people so that it is made obvious that many peoples work is behind this and many of those peoples work is important.

A/B test should be performed to investigate the difference.
