Before the Free Software Foundation put its support behind Nupedia, the FSF was establishing its own encyclopedia project.

Suggested names included the following:

  • GNE: GNE's Not an Encyclopedia (like: DanGeiser [originator], MikeWarren)
  • GNU/Alexandria
  • GNUpedia
  • GNUledge
  • Anoichtopedia
