Project idea[edit]

What is the problem you're trying to solve?[edit]

The entire Wikimedia project including all sites in all languages is long overdue for helping new users set up a userpage and their talk page. It is nice and personable that new users get usually welcome templates when another user notices, but I am not convinced that most people believe this is not robotic.

The blankness of the pages is a problem, but fixing that is more importantly a solution to a more fundamental problem that there needs to be a way for interested communities to identify new editors who need specialized training and invitations to join existing collaborative efforts. Two instances in which aimless new users regularly become frustrated and fail to connect with the people they should meet are students in classes who contribute to Wikipedia inappropriately and both have and cause negative experiences, and editors who absolutely need nuanced instruction from an established community like medicine.

What is your solution?[edit]

As with other social media websites, a wizard is available for newly registered users to set up a profile page. If new users were asked a few questions to sort their experience, then in the process of doing that a userpage could automatically be created for them and either they could automatically receive a specialized welcome and tutorial or a relevant community, if any, could be signaled that an interested person has registered an account.

A new user's own userpage and talk page ought to be a resource for them to present themselves to the community and get access to the personalized social connections and tutorials they need to get started.

If such a sorting system were in place then there ought to also be templates created for specific WikiProjects to adopt and present their specialized introduction to new users, should they wish to make such resources available.

Project goals[edit]

  • prototype a new user sorting system
  • get community comment
  • start a conversation about what kind of experience new users ought to have
