Activities and lessons learned[edit]

This section describes what the grantee did, and what the grantee learned from implementing the project. This section should be useful to others implementing similar projects and is an opportunity for the grantee to reflect on the project's performance.

Activities[edit]

Provide a detailed list of activities performed to complete this project, descriptions of these activities, and the amount of time spent on each activity. This section should also include a list of participants, or a link to pictures, blog posts, or videos from the project or event.

It has been a 6 month grant, second part of another grant, and it has included the following tracks:

  1. GLAM Partnerships
  2. Univeristies
  3. Public Libraries
  4. Wikipedia Workshops
GLAM Partnerships

On this second part of the GRANT we kept our ongoing project with museums, but we focused our biggest efforts in going to a further stage with commited museums, promoting the figure of Wikipedians in Residence. We had 8 Wikipedians in Residence at: 1 at Museu Jaume Morera (project page & project log), 1 at Joan Miró Foundation (projecte page & log page), 1 at History Museum of Catalonia (project page), 3 at Victor Balaguer Museum (project page), 1 at Music Museum of Barcelona (project and log page) and 1 at the Public Libraries Network (see below).

As a remark, please take a look at the Joan Miró audit, an deep research project done by an art historian regarding how Miró is seen on different wikis, comparing him to authors, movements, context. This research was funded by the Joan Miró Foundation and was the previous step for a Wikipedian in Residence there.

Universities

On Universities we have been preparing projects with several universities, presenting our EDUcational proposal to centers. Our biggest challenge has been preparing our (Design project) where 14 universities and design schools will co-work with the Design Museum of Barcelona to improve design-related Wikipedia articles. This has been a big organizational challenge but is an strategy proposal to show how Museums can collaborate with Wikipedia in an innovative way. + info in English. We are drafting similar projects with classical literature, ancient classics and music. Topics have been choosed because 2 reasons: A) special lack of content on Catalan Wikipedia or B) existing human contact with one particular teacher. Appart of these big projects, we keep on promoting our "class focused" projects where a teacher uses Wikipedia as home assignments for students. See the whole list of ongoing projects here.

Public Libraries

Here you have a full list of the activities done, on how we follow up librarians after wiki courses and the articles they are working on. On our Updated Monthly reports you can see activities organized by libraries monthly.

  1. Wikipedia Workshops:

We have done 33 workshops. You can see them detailes at our Monthly Activities Report. Most of them have been done in libraries, Museums or Universities. This way we take profit of other ongoing collaborations to get to local communities. Type of workshops varyes from 1 to 2 personalized workshop to 50 people Wikipedia editing masterclasses. The size of the workshops usually depends on the kind of institution we are collaborating with (universities tend to have big groups, while libraries mid size groups and museums small groups of people).

Lessons learned[edit]

What lessons were learned that may help others succeed in similar projects? Consider the following questions and respond with 1 - 2 paragraphs.
What went well?
We are going one step further with a commited network of Catalan GLAMs, Universities and Institutions that are working with Wikipedia at different levels, depending a mixture between GLAMs and volunteers commitment. After some time spending in mindchanging our partners, now we are focusing in mid-term projects with the most commited ones better than doing one-night-shot activities. Our special effort with librarians have been highly rewarded. Even the most commited ones have created a "bibliowiki" sticker and show it on the entrance door of their libraries, anouncing they can help library users on Wikipeda-related questions. On Wikipedia workshops we have improved our follow up procedures to increase user retention and we are getting better results (including post-workshop mentorship and Wikipedia article due dates for new editors). Universities is a mid-term run, but we are happy we are now scaling efforts done in previous GRANT, like copying the Wikimodernisme project in one for design, with 13 design school centers improving related content on Wikipedia. We are drafting a new one for music schools and many other universities. Regarding money: we did an austere management.
What did not go well?
This is a second part of a previous grant. So we learned where to better focus our efforts in order to have clearer expectations and better results. There is no big thing that "didn't go well" in this grant. Obviously, things could happen faster and better, and there is always space for improve, but we are a small commited community and we need to be aware of our capacities. Documenting the whole process could have been better.
What would you do differently if you planned a similar project?
It is hard to keep balance between what you plan and what you actually do regarding agenda and number of collaborations. In order to better audit efficiency and use of resources, we would like to have better standards regarding measure of success and KPIs. Many Wikimedia chapters and other associations are doing similar projects and we think it would be interesting to set up some kind of standard measures of success and related KPIs. This way we could all learn from each other. We also should include some kind of "documenting time budget" for better documenting our activities. Even if we timely share our reports, there is space for improving regarding case studies on our activities.

Project goal and measures of success[edit]

This section should reference the project goals and measures of success described in the approved grant submission. See Grants:PEG/Amical/GLAM & outreach (II) to review the goals and metrics listed in the approved submission.

Project goal[edit]

Provide the project goal here.
The goal of this project is to develop a second phase of the ongoing collaboration with several GLAM institutions, but with focus on Amical's collaboration with the network of Catalan public libraries. We also want to spread our already done successful model projects to other Catalan speaking universities.
Did you achieve your project goal? How do you know your goal was achieved? Please answer in 1 - 2 paragraphs.
Yes. Our relationship with the Catalan Network of Public Libraries has grown and has a midterm focus now. We now are collaborating with 68 libraries and with more universities.

Measures of success[edit]

List the measures of success exactly as provided in the approved grant submission, and evaluate your project according to each measure listed there.
Number of libraries collaborating with Wikipedia : 68. See whole list here
Number of activities organized by libraries themselves or with the collaboration of Amical Wikimedia: 18 libraries are self-organizing regular activities. They are the ones in the list marked with this icon.
Number of GLAMwiki partnerships going in Catalan Speaking areas: Around 50 (list here).
Number of universities with Eduwiki ongoing/drafted projects in Catalan speaking areas: 23: See related projects here. Note: One project can include more than 1 university (when is topic focused) and 1 university may be active in >1 project.
Provide an overall assessment of how your project went according to these measures.
We are very happy with the results of our ongoing projects. Most of them are not finished but ongoing. We truly believe in the power of mid-term better than "one-night-events" and these numbers show that we are getting to a mature point regarding GLAMwiki collaborations. We want to reproduce same kind of efforts on our educational project on 2014, which has gone great in 2013 but there is a lot of collaboration potential among universities.
If you were to plan a similar project, would you measure it differently? If yes, please explain how.
These numbers show how wide our GLAM and EDU projects are, but not necessarely how deep. As mentioned above, these kind of projects are starting to be quite usual in the wikiverse (GLAM partnerships, Educational projects, Workshops), so we would love that some measure standards where raised/promoted by the WMF.

Impact[edit]

This section ties this project to Wikimedia's broader goals, and shows what the project accomplished.

What impact did this project have on WMF's mission and the strategic goals? Please answer in 1 -2 paragraphs and include specific measures of impact such as the number of readers or editors reached by a particular project, or the number of articles edited or improved.
Stabilize infrastructure

As said on the previous edition of this grant, one of Amical's goals is self-sustainability. Although is not a necesarely request to do a partnership, Amical believes that partners (both GLAMs, Universities et al) should asume part of the cost of existing projects, to show real commitment. Also during this second phase of the grant, Amical had a full time person hired for executing this grant, but this grant doesn't cover salaries: Salary was covered among GLAMs & Universities.

Increase participation

We are still learning how to improve user retention in our workshops. During this grant, almost 500 people attended to a workshop led or organised by Amical. Our key strategy here is organising workshop not as an aisle activity but as a kick off of a wider project. We have implented one technique for following up workshops that is now being implemented. Is called : 1 month 1 article. Attendees to workshops "compromise" to create/heavily expand one article during the month after the workshop. Before the end of a workshop, we do a final open roudn where attendees says their username and the article they commit to work on. This way the teacher can do a follow up during the next month and we link onsite and online world. This technique is working specially OK on Libraries-oriented Workshops.

Improve quality

Projects with museums and universities are boosting Catalan Wikipedia quality. We are TOP1 and have the qualification of "perfect" among the list of Wikipedias by sample of articles. When you have an university student working on an article during some weeks you can get very specialised content. We also collaborate with Universities libraries, so they can facilitate hard-to find references to students.

Increase reach

Using an existing network of public libraries, we are smoothly expanding our reach. This way is easier for us to have presence in small town areas, where the librarians are self-organizing activities like edit-a-thons or wiki takes. They also organize Wikipedia workshops for other librarians, so they can scale their projects. As said in previous report, partnering with the most engaged libraries of this network, is helping us to develop a mid-term selfsustainable network where Libraries are our territorial wiki entry point. All these work has been recently recognised by Catalan institutions. Both Catalan Wikipedia and Amical Wikimedia have recently received important awards for its contribution to the spread of Catalan culture and free knowledge on the Internet.

Encourage innovation
Amical actively promotes free knowledge and open licensing among several institutions. We have signed a collaboration agreement with the Women Institute of Catalonia to promote free knowledge and Wikimedia among women. We have a draft project of Corporate social responsibility where we do Wikipedia workshops to public servants during their working hours, in order to engage them to edit Wikipedia during their spare time. We try to mix projects and institutions to keep them both sustainable and scalable. One other example is the creation of a team of 3 wikipedians in residence at the same museum, coming from 3 different universities, as a way of doing a mid-term project.

Reporting and documentation of expenditures[edit]

This section describes the grant's use of funds

Documentation[edit]

Did you send documentation of all expenses paid with grant funds to grants at wikimedia dot org, according to the guidelines here? Answer "Yes" or "No".
YES

Expenses[edit]

Please list all project expenses in a table here, with descriptions and dates. Review the instructions here.
These expenses should be listed in the same format as the budget table in your approved submission so that anyone reading this report may be able to easily compare budgeted vs. actual expenses.
Note that variances in the project budget over 10% per expense category must be approved in advance by WMF Grants Program staff. For all other variances, please provide an explanation in the table below.
