Budget breakdown[edit]

(N.B.: For ease of computing and to account for currency fluctuations, rates here are quoted at ₱41=$1 if Philippine peso figures are given. All values given here are estimates.)

  • Camera (Pentax K-r): ₱50,000 (around $1,220)
  • Transportation costs: ₱5,000 (around $122)

The camera model and type are negotiable, and I am prepared to suggest alternatives should this be necessary.

Project scope[edit]

The Wikistreets Project is a personal project which seeks to take photographs of major streets, roads and other thoroughfares in Metro Manila and other parts of the Philippines. Because there are several articles on roads in the Philippines which either have poor-quality pictures, outdated pictures or no pictures at all, I'm hoping to take pictures of them so that Wikipedians can benefit by being able to identify, for example, which road is which. Several of the roads that I intend to take pictures of are listed on the project subpage, and the list can be expanded as time goes on.

Unfortunately, since my camera went missing during Wikimania 2011, I am not in the financial position to buy a new camera to support this project, and I hope the Foundation will allow me to pursue this project by funding it.

Project goal[edit]

The goals of the Wikistreets Project are three-fold:

  • To provide quality pictures of roads in the Philippines where there aren't any, or when existing photographs are of poor quality
  • To produce articles on major Philippine roads where articles do not exist
  • To clean up existing articles on Philippine roads

Non-financial requirements[edit]

None.

Fit to strategy[edit]

The Wikistreets Project fits into the strategy of the Wikimedia movement in the sense that it opens doors for new information to come pouring in about what seems to be a mundane topic: roads. Especially given that Philippine roads are poorly-signed, posting pictures on Wikipedia not only allows for better identification as what I mentioned earlier, but also serves as viable seeds for the creation of new articles, which goes hand-in-hand with this project.

At the same time, the camera is not only for the use of the Wikistreets Project: depending on when I obtain the camera, I also intend to use it for my participation in Wiki Loves Monuments when I move to Poland to commence my studies. Likewise, I take a lot of photos, some of which I put on Wikipedia, and so I also intend to populate Wikimedia Commons with the pictures I will be taking during the camera's lifespan.

Other benefits[edit]

Measures of success[edit]

I hope to upload within the course of this project at least one picture of at least thirty (30) major roads in Metro Manila, as well as pictures of other landmarks and monuments throughout the city. I also hope to take pictures of at least five major provincial roads. As an added incentive, I hope to nominate at least one picture for featured picture status on Commons.
