Goal[edit]

Bengali is the 10th most spoken language in the world considering native and secondary speakers. If only native speakers are considered its rank would be even higher. Bengali Wikipedia is a growing in content with over 30,000 articles. The Wikipedia statistics shows 66 active editors and 15 very active editors as of July 2014. At present, in India, there are 8 editors actively contributing in the various Bengali Wikimedia projects - Wikipedia, Wikisource and Wiktionary. Apart from that we have around 15-20 volunteers who work mostly offline or little bit in the English Wikipedia and others. The objective of the Bengali Wikipedia 10th anniversary celebrations is to commemorate 10 years of Bengali Wikipedia and to strengthen Bengali Wikipedia community and its outreach efforts.

Plan[edit]

Activities[edit]

A two day event is tentatively planned at the Jadavpur University in Kolkata. The event would be a get together of the Bengali Wikipedians.

  • 10th Anniversary Conference

At the end of all programs, a two day conference will be held where the winners of photography contest and the best Wikipedians will be given awards. A number of sessions will be held at the conference to discuss different issues related to Bangla Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. A tentative schedule of the program is available here.

  • Photography contest

On the occasion of tenth anniversary celebration, Bangla Wikipedia Photography Contest has already been launched. The contest has started on September 1, 2014 and it will end on October 31, 2014. The contest has already been published by a number of leading newspapers. Three best photographs will be rewarded along with highly commendable award for seven other photographs. At the 10th Anniversary Conference, a exhibition will be held with 40 best photographs from the contest.

  • Kolkata Photowalk

Keeping in mind the Bangla Wikipedia Photography Contest, a photo walk will be organized in Kolkata on 14 December 2014. The photo walk titled Wikipedia Takes Kolkata IV will cover the heritage places in South Kolkata in the Tollygunge - Chetla - Kalighat area.

Target readership[edit]

The 10th anniversary program is will mainly impact Bangla Wikipedia in Both Bengal (West Bengal & Bangladesh). Apart from Bangla Wikipedia, the program will also impact other Bangla language Wikimedia projects: Bangla Wiktionry, Bangla Wikisource, Bangla Wikibooks and also the Bangla related contents at Wikimedia Commons.

Measures of success[edit]

Bangla Wikipedia had an article count of only 18,000 in January 2012 which is about 33,000 now. We had about 40-50 active and 6-7 very active editors back then, but now it is 100+ active editors and 15-16 very active editors. Number of articles in January 2012 was about 21000 and in august 2014 it was 32000+.

  • 50% increase in the number of active contributors to Bengali Wikimedia projects in a period of next six months.
  • At least 500 images uploaded to Commons as a part of Bangla Wikipedia Photo Contest (India).
  • At least 50 new contributors in Commons.
  • More uploads and content addition to Wikimedia repositories
  • Integration of at least 5-10% images uploaded in Commons to the Bengali Wikimedia projects.
  • Number and quality of participants in the events.
  • Reflections and coverage of the event in mass media reports and other channels of outreach.

Risks[edit]

  • Community of Bengali Wikipedians in India is relatively smaller, which may result in difficulty in recruiting volunteers.
  • Components of measurement process are not easy to quantify because Bengali Wikipedians are spread across India and Bangladesh.

  • The 10th Anniversary Program of Bengali Wikipedia which is to be organized at Kolkata is an effort to bring together the Bengali speaking Wikipedians of both India and Bangladesh who have been working together for last 10 years to develop Bengali Wikipedia to its present state. It will also be a meeting place of other Indian language Wikipedians who can enrich Bengali Wikipedia with their experience.   • Participation and Community: This public celebration of the ten years of growth of Bengali Wikipedia will help us strengthen the community, review our progress and plan our future. The conference will help create a better environment for collaboration, particularly in resolving policy differences. This is very important considering the different cultural and historical backgrounds of Bengali speaking communities.
  • Increase Reach: The meetup will provide an excellent outreach opportunity to popularize Bengali Wikimedia projects through the mainstream media, social media and direct outreach. The meetup will attract the general public, the academia, Bengali enthusiasts, professionals, journalists and well-wishers, raising awareness and drawing a considerable number of active contributors to Bengali Wikipedia.
  • Quality Content: The editathon will help us improve the quality of the most important articles that should be present in Bengali Wikipedia.
  • Credibility: Putting faces to names behinds the Bengali Wiki projects will add to the credibility of Wikimedia projects. Conference will also provide many opportunities for general public, press and active contributors to ask questions and seek clarifications regarding the inner workings of Bengali Wikimedia projects.
  • Organizational Maturity and Effectiveness:The 10th anniversary celebration will be the first program organized by the community of such a callibre. Through the programs, the community will get an opportunity to effectively arrange and conduct different events. This will also result in the increase of local Wikimedia community and volunteers.

These celebrations will specifically benefit Bengali Wikipedia and all Bengali Wikimedia projects in general. The handbook will help attract contributors for all Bengali Wikimedia projects. The two day Wiki meetup will help exchange of ideas and know how between contributors active in different Bengali Wikimedia projects. The pictures captured during the conference trip will be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons that can be used by any Wikimedia project.

This project has a high potential to be replicated by other groups. By organizing a self running contest, a hand guide that can be translated and a minimalistic international Wiki meetup, we hope to set a format that other small Wikipedias can follow. It will be a good example for most of the Indian and other language Wikipedias that will celebrate 10 years.
