Impact[edit]

Target readership[edit]

Editors from all the Indic Wikimedia projects are going to join this conference. They contribute to all the Wikimedia projects such as:

  1. Wikipedia,
  2. Wikimedia Commons,
  3. Wikisource,
  4. Wikiquotes,
  5. Wikivoyage etc.

So the event will try to empower the best editors from each and every Indic Wikimedia community. In addition to that we expect the participants will share their learnings with their own community members, so that they are also get benefited.

Fit with strategy[edit]

What crucial thing will the project try to change or benefit in the Wikimedia movement? Please select the Wikimedia strategic priority(ies) that your project most directly aims to impact and explain how your project fits. Most projects fit all strategic priorities. However, we would like project managers to focus their efforts on impacting 1–2 strategic priorities. Examples of strategic priorities can be found here.

Wikiconference India 2016 meets the following fit with strategy :
  • Increasing reach : stake holders of open knowledge, open data and open source movements are intended participants and we will have a follow up with them in long run/future activities.
    • Spreading the word about Wikimedia projects to general audience invited to the event
  • Increasing participation
    • Existing Wikipedians who have been part of volunteer teams in this event are groomed as leaders in respective communities
    • Training sessions for woman, advance training sessions for existing users will be facilitated
  • Increasing quality
    • Images to be added to commons and used on Wiki articles
    • Articles to be improved as part of pre and post conference activities

Measures of success[edit]

Please provide a list of both quantitative and qualitative criteria that will be used to determine how successful the project is. You will need to report on the success of the project according to these measures after the project is completed. See the PEG program resources for suggested measures of success.

The success of Wikiconference India 2016 will be measured through the following measures:

  1. We expect that the active community members from all the Indic language Wikipedias including English Wikipedia community members from India to participate;
  2. Encyclopedic content (articles, images and other media files) generated in all the Indic Wikimedia projects;
  3. At least one project with pan-Indian theme generating 50 articles;
  4. At least 1,000 photographs taken during the pre-conference work;
  5. At least 100 unused photographs from Wiki Loves Food included in articles.
  6. A new set of Wikimedians would be created from Chandigarh. At least 50 new editors will come on board Wikipedia and sister projects. Of these, 10 are expected to be active Wikimedians.
  7. Getting tax-payer funded knowledge missions to understand free licensing and getting them to participate.

Note: In addition to your project-specific measures of success, you will also be asked to report on some global metrics at the end of your final report. Please keep this in mind as you plan, and we'll support you as you begin your project.

Resources and risks[edit]

Resources[edit]

We have local organizing and national level teams to organize the whole event.
First WikiConference India happened in 2011 at Mumbai University. - Grant request and Report

Risks[edit]

  • A huge pan-India event like Wikiconference India is happening at such scale after almost 5 years, so logistics and costs are uncertain. The turnout may be huge or maybe less.
  • Another risk is the vastness of Indian-language communities and co-ordination. But with the current composition of the team, and past experience of organising such events, we anticipate that we’ll be able to address it.
  • Chandigarh, the location of the event, is located in far north of India but a large number of the active Indic Wikimedia communities are from South India. Because of the location, some people may be unwilling to travel so far. But we are trying to address this issue by providing air travels (to who?)for the people who will come from a long distance.
  • The conference may coincide with other important events in India such as UPSC Civil services prelims exams, so we are unsure if it’ll affect participation of a few editors.

  18. This is a brisk and wonderful period in the ongoing internet penetration era of the weft and warp of India and her neighboring countries. The time is ripe with massive growth rates of both mobile and wide-screen internet usage. However, the average common public of Indian subcontinent are yet far away from the ecology of Wikipedia and Wikimedia missions. Someone must NOW show them vividly that there exists this thing called Wikipedia and Wikipedia belongs to them too. Just as the WCI2011 program held in Mumbai, great are the expectations of how this pan-nation meetup would cause yet another grand leap of Wikipedia users, both readers and editors. This program will definitely place Wikimedia projects at a much wider and higher perspective to all participating volunteers as well as the spectating mass and media. I strongly endorse as well as offer my voluntary contributions to this endeavor. ViswaPrabhaവിശ്വപ്രഭtalk 21:14, 9 May 2016 (UTC)
  19. This is a welcome initiative. This will definitely help in dialogue between the various Indian language Wiki contributors as well as lay the ground for an eventual Wikimania in India. There could be a number of chance collaborations waiting to happen. -- Sundar (talk) 03:55, 10 May 2016 (UTC)

  23. There is definitely a need for a diverse representatives of the community to bring their minds together for discussion and debate on a whole range of topics and the physical meet seems to be the only hope given the inability to communicate in a written form over the Internet, across languages and other divides. It will be a great success like OCR4Wikisource. Punjabi's are having long history in our national integration. I am very eager to meet most of Indian contributors because we are living with <1000kms distance in different states of government.Meeting is possible, only event like this. --Info-farmer (talk) 02:28, 12 May 2016 (UTC)

  36. Support Support Past WikiConferences in India have been the most attended Wikimedia events in the world. Conferences in India have a higher chance for success in attendance and impact than Wikimedia events elsewhere, and also, success is more likely with lower funding than elsewhere in the world. This is a modest request for a conference this size, and modest even among conferences in India. It might be worthwhile for the Wikimedia Foundation to provide event coordination and event reporting advice and support beyond just the funding, but as far as the likelihood of a meaningful event with significant outcomes at this funding level, that seems like a safe risk. This project has been planned to connect all Indic language communities together and learn from each other's experience.
