Project scope[edit]

Volunteers in the San Francisco Bay Area have organized a West Coast Wikicon to coincide with Wikipedia's 10th anniversary. It will be an open space gathering for community members and for people anxious to learn more about Wikimedia. As such, it will be an opportunity to share learnings and build community. Additionally, Ward Cunningham, the creator of wikis, and Kevin Kelly, a well-known futurist, have both committed to participating as keynote speakers.

We are charging for participation to help cover costs. The $1,250 we are requesting from the Wikimedia Foundation will cover our shortfall if we get our hoped-for 100 participants, and it will cover our fixed costs if we do not. We will return any money we do not spend.

Project goal[edit]

The goal of this project is to serve as a gathering for Wikimedia community members (primarily on the West Coast) to share knowledge and build relationships.

Non-financial requirements[edit]

This gathering will serve three of Wikimedia's five-year movement goals:

  • Focus quality content. Identify ways in which we can improve the quality of content on the different projects.
  • Increase participation. Galvanize existing community members and introduce potential participants to the projects and the community.
  • Encourage innovation. Surface possible innovations and opportunities to collaborate.

Other benefits[edit]

The San Francisco Bay Area is the center of technology innovation worldwide, and it's where the Wikimedia Foundation is located. As such, it is naturally a hub for innovative, social-minded individuals anxious to support a worthy project. The press is also likely to pay closer attention to activities based here in San Francisco, especially given Ward Cunningham and Kevin Kelly's participation.

We expect our event to draw outstanding participants from the Wikimedia community and beyond, and also to attract national press attention.

Measures of success[edit]

We will consider this project a success if:

  • We attract at least 50 great participants
  • We generate and document a number of great ideas
