Paper title: Starting the Brazilian Wikipedia Education Program: educational and community specifics

Abstract:

The Brazilian participation on the Wikipedia Educational Project started in the second semester of 2011, with a pilot undergraduate course on Roman History at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro State (UNIRIO). One experienced wikimedian [1] worked as Campus Ambassador, and two other members [2] [3] of the lusophone Wikipedia community acted as Online Ambassadors throughout the course. This paper discusses the implementation of this experience, together with the implications of the results obtained among the lusophone Wikipedia community, students and academia. Cultural and educational specifics of Brazil are also discussed, in that they must be carefully considered when planning the growth and development of the Wikipedia Educational Project in the country.

Goal and Expected Impact[edit]

Reflecting on the factors of success for the Wikipedia Educational program is vital to the future of the project in Brazil. It is also important to discuss the country specifics in terms of educational and community particulars.
