Grants:PEG/WM PH/Wikipedia Takes Manila/Report

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Project Goal:

The goal of the project is aimed at increasing the coverage of free photographs involving the City of Manila so that they can be used in Wikipedia articles which need pictures, as well as promoting awareness of Wikipedia in Manila, particularly to people who are not Wikipedians, or who may have wrong notions or perceptions about the projects.

Description of actual activities:

On January 15, 2011, Wikimedia Philippines hosted Wikipedia Takes Manila, a one-day photo scavenger hunt in the spirit of Wikipedia Takes the City held in Manila, the Philippines. This event, the first of its kind in the Philippines and Southeast Asia, was held as part of Wikipedia X, a series of events held throughout the world in commemoration of Wikipedia's tenth anniversary. For Filipino Wikipedians resident in Metro Manila, this also served as the Twelfth Filipino Wikipedians' Meetup in Metro Manila.

Over 100 participants, both individual and grouped in teams, converged on Paco Park between 8:00-9:00 am PST for registration, attendance and briefing of participants on the rules of the competition. Participants left Paco Park at 9:05 am, and returned between 4:00-6:00 pm. Between that time, WMPH members and Trustees were interviewed by a journalist affiliated with GMA News and Public Affairs, had lunch and celebrated online the 50,000th article of the Tagalog/Filipino Wikipedia, which coincidentally was made on this day.

At 6:00 pm, teams proceeded to Shakey's Pizza on United Nations Ave. for the after-event party and awards ceremony. Prizes were also given out and some images were uploaded. Other images were physically given to the organizers for auditing and future uploading after it was discovered that the venue's bandwidth could not support the sheer number of photos being uploaded by the Wikimedia Photo Scavenger Hunts tool. The party ended at 11:00 pm with the cutting of the Wikipedia 10 birthday cake.

What lessons were learned that could help others succeed in similar projects?

What worked well?
  • The number of participants confirmed on our Facebook page and registration form totaled around 200 participants, but unlike our previous events where people register and the majority don't show up, around half of all registered participants came.
  • Teams were enthusiastic and cooperative with the rules
  • Organization was more efficient compared to previous events
  • Volunteers were effective and worked well
  • We were able to develop partnerships with organizations, websites, institutions and networks, both tech and non-tech, that participated in the contest (i.e. Manila Bloggers Network, GameOPS.net, the Mind Museum, Phil.IT, etc.)
Points for improvement?
  • Institution of a waiver system for missing items. Some items reportedly went missing during the contest, most likely stolen while teams were going around Manila.
  • More efficient means of tallying as a backup mechanism in the event the toolserver fails
What should be removed?
  • None. There should be further improvement though for future events of a similar nature.
What should be retained?
  • Promotions over social media, which was very effective
  • Linkages developed during the contest
  • Positive reception among Filipino amateur and professional photographers, which was present during this event

What impact did the project have on WMF mission goals of Increased Reach, Increased Quality, Increased Credibility, Increased and Diversified Participation?

Quantitatively, all measures were met: over 100 people participated in both the competition and the party, with nearly 1,000 photographs uploaded or waiting to be uploaded to the Wikimedia Commons. Several articles on Wikipedia, such as the Raja Soliman Science and Technology High School, Museo Pambata, R. Papa LRT Station, 117, Thomasites and Florentino Torres High School, now have photographs as a result.

Qualitatively, we feel that given the enthusiastic response of the project, the partnerships which we were able to develop will go a long way towards improving the reach of our projects, and help the organization in general.
