[edit] Budget breakdown

Interns will be paid a lump sum of $500 per session. This budget will provide for six additional paid intern slots, providing us with the flexibility either to pay for more interns at one time, and/or to extend the program into the future (depending on what is most practical at the time).

It should be noted that our previous request for the Internship Program was accidentally underfunded by the WMF by $1000, which is why we have asked for more to make up for it this time.

[edit] Project scope

Wikimedia NYC would like to expand its capacity for working in the real world and interacting with local institutions though a student internship program. The prime candidates we will be looking at to recruit will be the students we have worked with successfully in the past at the Students For Free Culture groups at Columbia University and NYU, as well as students in Free Culture-related courses taught by professors sympathetic to our mission.

Funding for this project will go toward intern compensation.

[edit] Project goal

The goal of this project is to enable a more sustained and professional building of relationships with the institutions of our region, and will allow us to follow up on promising opportunities for interactions that we have not been able to pursue in the past because of insufficient volunteer resources. The interns will be mostly employed in writing to and meeting with representatives of such institutions, to help us develop these new relationships.

Our previous intern projects have included Wikipedia in the Neighborhood and Lights Camera Wiki.

[edit] Non-financial requirements

A letter from the Wikimedia Foundation, helping to establish the internship with the participating university (so that the intern can get full student credit) would be very helpful.

[edit] Fit to strategy

The project will help develop the professionalization and credibility of the organization, and its capacity for further such professionalization in the future.

[edit] Other benefits

This project takes advantage of existing relationships with local Students For Free Culture activists and students in Free Culture-related courses, who are already ideally suited in knowledge, energy and enthusiasm to help advance Wikimedia projects.

[edit] Measures of success

We will consider this project a success if we substantially improve our range of working relationships with local institutions, and lay a solid foundation for our longer-term existence as an organization.
