Number of applications[edit]

600 applications is very little... sounds like most people are not hopeful. --Nemo 21:49, 23 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

It was a lot less than previous years, though compared to the number of scholarships available, it's not bad. Lack of hope may have been a factor, though I speculated that the way the programme was advertised this year will have made a big difference. CT Cooper · talk 22:45, 24 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Ideally, the purpose of restricting the eligibility criteria is that the "true targets" get more likely to understand they are desired and apply more. --Nemo 23:37, 24 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps several Europeans chose not to apply? -- NaBUru38 (talk) 13:00, 27 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Sure. It's pretty clear that Europeans are not the intended audience of the WMF scholarship program, I gave that for granted. :) --Nemo 00:16, 28 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
100 out of 600 getting a scholarship? Really??? Only 100 receiving a scholarship of all the thousands of users from the worldwide community? How small does WMF think the community is?
It is annoying that the WMF scholarships for Wikimania are advertised as open to everyone, while in fact a lot of users who have a vital role in the Wikimedia community (not from the global south) are not selected. It is good that 73% of the people from the global south are awarded for a scholarship, it is not good that so many users that have a vital role in the community are not selected. This shows how far WMF is away from the community. (I am happy to see that Lila is actively working on improving the (in general) worse position of WMF compared to the community, but still much needs to be done.) Lucky there are chapters who solve the issue and fill up the gap where WMF is failing. Romaine (talk) 23:27, 29 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
PS: I think it will be time to get a Wikimedia Europe Conference (WeCon) in those years Wikimania is not in Europe. Romaine (talk) 23:33, 29 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Please consider that not much money can be left for scholarships, when reimbursements to WMF staff already consume half a million dollars. :) --Nemo 16:47, 2 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Is there a somewhat comparable selection process for WMF employees or is every staff member entitled to be paid his or her trip to every Wikimania? → «« Man77 »» [de] 17:52, 15 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
