From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Sample pages for an internal arbcom or specialist project wiki

Feel free to copy and paste some of these markups into pages on your new wiki, and customize as needed. When these pages are set up, you might have a useful starting point framework for your wiki.

These cover some basic templates, basic mediawiki namespace configuration, and a main page. Note that most of this page was written in the year 2008.

Help:Wiki overview[edit]

Newcomers to your wiki will need a page to orient them.

Example for an internal arbcom wiki:

Wiki overview
Permissions
* Access to new users is granted via Special:Userlogin and select "signup".
* Sysop access on the wiki is granted on request.
* Access to the arbcom wiki is essentially the same people as for the mailing list. As of 2008 that's basically: (list)

URLs
* Secure URL: https://secure.wikimedia.org/.../wiki/PAGENAME
* Insecure URL: http://...wiki*.org/wiki/PAGENAME

Wiki usage and layout
The wiki is used mainly for:
:* Considering cases (Case: namespace)
:* Documenting arbitration committee appeals, case evidence, and additional rights, related to users.
:* Ad-hoc projects (Project: namespace)
:* Precedents and wordings
:* General matters (discussion board)
:* Standing information (including config, information, howto, and such)

These can be accessed via the left sidebar, or the main template visible on many pages.

Customization
* Namespaces can be listed via the dropdown box at Special:Allpages. Currently the namespaces are: <font color="blue">Main, User, Project, Case, Image, Mediawiki, Template, Help, Category</font> (and related "_talk:" spaces). Specific notes:
::{| class="wikitable" width="80%"
Case:<br />Case_talk: || all cases
Project:<br />Project_talk: || specific projects such as the working group, wiki improvement, workshop and RFAR processes, etc.
* Sidebar can be customized at MediaWiki:Sidebar.
* Mediawiki interface can be customized at Special:Allmessages (AKA system messages).
* Formatting, and markup capabilities (CSS, table types and classes, etc) used on Russian Wikipedia that don't work here yet, can be imported via the Mediawiki: namespace (See Help:CSS and formatting).
* Changes requiring dev intervention can be done via a request to Cary Bass. If you need the devs (try not to ask them for things!) use Wikimedia's issue tracker. Brion or Tim can often be found on Freenode.net IRC at <tt>#wikimedia-tech</tt>, but don't nag :-)
* Image at top left - set via config file: but if you set it to "<upload path>/b/bc/Wiki.png" (or FILENAME) then you can change it by uploading a file called Wiki.png (or FILENAME).
* Background color can be modified by adding the following to your common.css. This is useful to make it immediately clear to a user when they are editing this (as opposed to another) wiki:
<pre>
body {
 background-color: #ffe9d8; <or the color of your choice>
 background-image: none;
}
</pre>

Communications
IRC channels
IRC channels for X exist at <tt>X</tt> and at <tt>Y</tt>. Other useful channels:
* <tt>#channel</tt> (description)
* <tt>#wikimedia-tech</tt> (technical queries and requests specific to WMF operation of the systems and wikis)
* <tt>#mediawiki</tt> (general queries about mediawiki)

For information on signing up and IRC commands, see Help:IRC.

Mailing lists
* Useful mailing lists exist at [mailto:X@lists.wikimedia.org X@lists.wikimedia.org] (list).

Other help
Checkuser
* Help on checkuser is at Help:Checkuser guide

Matters requiring WMF or dev action
* Help and advice on matters possibly requiring WMF or dev action is at Help:Requests to WMF or devs

Main Page[edit]

As described in the main guide, for private wikis, the official Main Page is usually a small page for visitors to the wiki. It might be helpful include links to the secure and regular login pages.

"Portal" page for an arbcom:

This is the private wiki used by the Arbitration Committee of the Russian Wiktionary.
clearMain contents

If this is your first use of this wiki, most useful pages are linked from the main template on your right, or the sidebar on your left. A list of all pages can be found at Special:Allpages.

Alternatively, start at the Wiki overview.

"Portal" page for another project:

New account holders:
* Don't forget to set (and confirm) your email in prefs, and enable email notification if you use that feature.
*Add your user page to :Category:Users and also to (other categories) as needed.
* Add your name to Group info/Users, and if willing to disclose your email to others here (which most will be) then add that (and any other useful contact methods) there as well.
Boxend

Those who use IRC, two users have set up an IRC channel (#channel name). Non-IRC users are party to discussions there by means of logs being checked, and posted up (in their entirety) with a summary to the wiki for anyone -- see Help:IRC.
Boxend

That done, start at the Wiki overview for more.

MediaWiki:Specialpages-summary[edit]

This page lists all "special pages" available in this wiki.

The text of individual messages or pages can be customized via ‘’’Special:Allmessages’’’ (listed under "system messages").

Help:CSS and formatting[edit]

In some cases, code needs to be imported from enwp to allow formatting to work here as it does there. This page explains how.

Then reload the page to get the new code working.

If you update any of the pages referenced, please list details below!

__TOC__
Background and how-to
A large part of code (such as the definition of certain wikitable formats) is defined on the site-wide CSS or JS. Any arbwiki sysop can copy over code related to the following:

* MediaWiki:Common.css (en: arb:)
* MediaWiki:Common.js (en: arb:)
The laziest method is to just copy all of the files from enwiki or your local language wiki to the arbcom wiki, but check what it would overwrite first. If there is stuff in those pages already on arbwiki (you don't need to be a sysop to check) it might need careful merging. There may also be other scripts or stylesheets being imported.

To shade a color darker try replacing all "c8"s by "b0". For lighter shades try replacing by "d0".

Help:Requests to WMF or devs[edit]

This page covers requests to WMF or devs, by arbcom or arbcom members, such as:

:* Config changes to enwp, arb wiki, or related mailing lists.
:* Edits to the wiki or logs, or user rights, requiring WMF or dev intervention.

In general such requests should be confirmed as agreed by arbcom, to ensure there is no miscommunication, and then in most cases :en:User:Cary Bass should be approached with the request.

Remember 1/ developers are normally volunteers and if they're not, they work for the WMF and not for us, 2/ devs have access to the systems but are not authorized to make decisions or judge if the decisions are well founded in many cases.
