IRC/wikipedia/Operator welcome e-mail
Hello. You have been selected as a channel operator for #wikipedia, because you are a respected and trustworthy member of the Wikipedia community.
As a channel operator, you are required to enforce the #wikipedia channel guidelines, which can be found at the following URL:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/IRC_guidelines/wikipedia
These guidelines mark a significant shift in direction for the #wikipedia channel, bringing it more on-topic and requiring a higher standard of conduct of its channel members. The aim is to make #wikipedia an inoffensive, on-topic place where useful discussion about the Wikipedia project as a whole can occur. Please read the guidelines carefully.
Although there should be some latitude to the enforcement of these guidelines, you should hold all users to a high standard of conduct. It is expected that the majority of cases are solved with words: it is requested that you become familiar with the freenode catalyst philosophy specifically. Talk to users in private using /msg before anything else.
If users refuse to comply with the guidelines, they should at the first instance be quietened in channel (a +q or +b %). Kickbans and bans should be reserved for spammers and repeat offenders where +q is not effective.
As a channel operator, you are required to observe a high standard of conduct yourself, and use your operator tools fairly and without bias. If you misuse your operator tools in any way, your operator access may be removed at any time by Martinp23, Wimt or one of the freenode group contacts.
If you feel you cannot abide by these stringent standards of operator and user conduct, please inform one of the channel contact (Martinp23 or his deputy Wimt), who will remove your access. Please indicate that you have read this e-mail by replying to whomever sent it to you.
Thank you for helping to make #wikipedia a better channel.
Martinp23 / Wimt
