This is part of LSS, a mailing list summary service. It is a summary of wikiEN-l. Most posts whose authors are named have links to the full e-mail in the archive. However not every post is archived and the archive itself is so unstable that the urls will periodically be reassigned breaking the links in this summary. While edits to correct inaccuracies are welcome, changes to style or focus should first be discussed on the talk page. Decisions on whether to refer to people by their Wikipedia handle or their email name is arbitrary and may not be completely internally consistent. Some genders may be accidentally incorrect.Incorrect or not, this standard is used all around the net, for business or projects.

Threads[edit]

  • [1] Earle Martin asks about what should be done about an article that is mostly composed of original research and is a how-to guide on how to climb a particular mountain. He is told to trim the article down to general descriptions of each route.
  • [2] Erik Moeller notes that the cleanup effort at the Sep11 wiki has ended and it has been locked again. (Note: Moeller had previously asked for help to clean up the project after it was temporarily unlocked for that purpose) He comments on Jeff Merkey's volunteering to host it on an independent site.
  • [3] Simon Blandford asks what should be done when a user posts a reply to a warning on 3 different pages. He is told to link 2 of the copies to the other.
  • [4] George William Herbert points to an instance of where a unit conversion was done inside a quote; this provokes a discussion on whether it was appropriate. General consensus is that the conversion should appear somewhere, but probably not directly written inside the quote.
  • [5] Alek Storm announces his creation of a javascript tool to allow edits to individual sections to be on the same page, rather than loading the edit page.
  • [6] Keith Old links to an article introducing Intellipedia, the United States intelligence community's 3 wikis used to store intelligence and make it easily accessible to other members of the wikis.
  • [7] Drini requests that somebody add him to OTRS/personnel and mentions that he has translated several OTRS templates into Spanish.
  • [8] Shimgray links to a review of a book explaining copyright law in relation to images.
  • [9] UninvitedCompany explains how he has recently collected audio tapes from the 50s and 60s and that they have very high quality for such old technology. He says that he has a tape from pre-1968 and believes that, since there was no copyright notice on the tape that it was in the public domain, and wonders if this was actually correct. He comments that if it was correct, then there are many tapes that could be converted into Ogg format and uploaded.
  • [10] David Gerard asks people what policies they dislike, and dozens of replies debate various Wikipedia policies, including CSDs A7 and G11, IAR, WP:OFFICE, the username policy, WP:SOCK and many more.
  • [11] Keith Old quotes a news article that discussed how hackers created an article on the German Wikipedia about the Blaster worm and linked to a virus in the article, claiming it was a fix. The hackers then emailed people linking them to the article and even when the link was removed, the hackers linked to the old version to bypass spam filters.
  • [12][13] SPUI links to a diff in Nov 4's featured article of somebody repeatedly adding original research. David Gerard then blocked SPUI for violating 3RR.
