The use of non-free media on Meta may be appropriate and justified in certain limited circumstances. Recognizing the unique nature of Meta in facilitating the activities of the various Wikimedia Foundation projects rather than creating content, there will only be few instances where images can be used under the fair use defence against accusations of copyright infringement.
Where images are used under fair use, information on the source of the image and a fair use rationale for each instance of use must be provided or the image will be deleted. The use of such images should be minimized as much as possible and it must be considered impossible for a freely licensed alternative to be found or created to provide the same information. The use of fair use images outside the main namespace is not permitted.

[edit] Fair use whitelist
On Meta the use of the fair use defence is to be limited to the instances set out in this list. Any use not covered by this whitelist is not allowed. Proposals for additions to the whitelist should be discussed on the talk page.
[edit] Logos
It may be appropriate when discussing an organisation such as a WMF event sponsor to include their logo for purposes of identification. The nature of logos prevents a free alternative from being found or created. The lowest possible resolution should be used, and such images must not be altered.
Copyrighted logos must be tagged with the {{Unfree logo}} template, which categorizes the images into Category:Unfree logos.
[edit] Wikimedia Related Product and Award Photos
It is acceptable to showcase photographs of Wikimedia related products and awards in relevant pages, such as the trophy box, even if the products and awards themselves are protected by copyrights or trademarks.
[edit] Screenshots
Screenshots of computer software may be used where appropriate and where they can be shown to necessary in facilitating the work of the various WMF projects. Screenshots should be responsibly cropped to only show relevant portions.
