For volunteers

We always need fresh volunteers for the info-en queues.

[edit] What you'll be doing

OTRS volunteers handle incoming e-mail for the Wikimedia Foundation. This covers everything from complaints about simple vandalism to allegations of libel and bias in biographical articles. Volunteers have a number of "boilerplate" responses available for common questions, but they are also free to answer in their own (tactful!) words.

Our info-en queue and its subqueues handle most e-mail written in English. They are some of the busiest queues in the OTRS system and serve as the "front lines" for most reader interaction.

[edit] A warning.

If you're looking at OTRS as another feature for your userpage, though, then think again.

Answering the info-en tickets is stressful. There's no two ways about it. You'll be handling messages from people who are upset, clueless, disrespectful, and who in many cases have a legitimate complaint. OTRS volunteers see Wikipedia at its worst, get caught in the crossfire between editors and article subjects, and make pointless expenditures of any political capital they may have accumulated for the cause. On a good day.

[edit] What we look for

All volunteers:

  • must have a positive attitude about the Wikimedia Foundation and its mission.
  • must not have a history of biting newcomers. (Almost all OTRS tickets are from newcomers!)
  • should be experienced sysops on one or more Foundation projects.
  • should be in good standing on all Foundation projects where you participate.
  • should have a history of keeping their cool even when dealing with raving lunatics.

We are especially interested in hearing from you if you are:

  • A sysop on a small project with few or no OTRS volunteers
  • A BLP specialist
  • Fluent in both English and another language and willing to help with interlingual complaints (for example, complaints written in English about content in the Greek Wikipedia)
