[edit] en-You used my trademark!

edit discuss

In recent correspondence with Wikimedia Foundation, you have complained about the content of a page or pages on Wikipedia. Our standard response to letters of this sort is to point out that that there is an "edit" tab at the top of every article page, enabling any reader, including a trademark holder or his attorney, to edit the content himself.

We have tried to make the "edit" function easy to learn and use. If you have difficulty figuring out how to "edit" a particular page to improve a problem that you see there, please contact us at info-en_____________ and we will assist you in learning the tools to enable you to correct the entry.

We ask that you note also that Wikimedia Foundation does not claim copyrights or any other intellectual-property ownership interest in any article on Wikipedia (the copyrights are held by the authors themselves), and that, furthermore, any reproduction of your trademark in the course of an article may be an instance of "trademark fair use" or of "nominative" use of the trademark (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_use_%28US_trademark_law%29 for a discussion of these defenses).

We hope you have found this response helpful, and we look forward to your becoming active Wikipedians and improving erroneous or misrepresentative information that you happen to come across on Wikipedia or on our other projects.

[edit] vandalism/hacked!

edit discuss

Firstly, please allow me to extend a sincere thank you on behalf of the Wikimedia Foundation for taking time out of your day to alert us of this problem. I'm happy to inform you that the article has been fixed!

As you may already know, Wikipedia is a "wiki" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiki), which means that anyone visiting the site can edit or add to pages. At the top of each page is an "edit" tab, clicking this allows the page to be edited. In this way, we are creating a collaborative encyclopaedia, written by visitors to the site.

Wikipedia, by its own nature, is open to undesirable edits (as anyone can edit), but most of these are corrected by other editors within a very short time. We have a "recent changes" page that allows users to check edits as they happen, and "watch lists" that allow logged-in editors to closely monitor pages they are interested in. In extreme cases we can "lock" pages from receiving edits for a while, but generally the page can be reopened for editing after a short time as most edits we receive improve our articles.

You are welcome to revert vandalism yourself; in fact, we highly encourage it! See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Reverting

You can read more about us at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia

Again, thank you very much for your kindness in writing about the problem you saw and please don't hesitate to get back in touch with any future comments or questions.

[edit] noc-spam

edit discuss

Most spam is sent with a falsified return address, using a randomly selected internet domain. Due to the way internet e-mail works, it is trivial to produce such false addresses and there is absolutely no way for us to prevent it.

Spam of this sort is primarily sent through personal and business computers on high-speed network connections which have been compromised by viruses or other malware. If you carefully examine the mail headers you will see the lines indicating which servers the mail has passed through, and can look up the network locations of the machines. Usually you will find it to be cable or DSL internet connections in Asia, Europe, or North America.

These messages are not sent by us, nor through our servers, nor with our consent. There is unfortunately nothing we can do to prevent it, as the internet's e-mail system is inherently insecure in this way.

[edit] Urgent-en

For intractable cases where a plausible threat of legal action has been made or appears likely. Also for any high-profile cases that come up.

[edit] Courtesy

For unactionable tickets where we would reply only out of courtesy, including:

  • Requests for new articles
  • Additions to articles
  • Changes to or deletions of articles that do not involve potentially libellous content or copyright violations
  • Submissions of text or images
  • Requests for assistance in browsing, searching, printing, or editing
  • Unblock requests and discussions AOL/shared/dynamic users wrongly warned
  • Compliments, suggestions, and complaints
  • MediaWiki bug reports
  • Content disputes
  • Reports of mirrors or forks of Wikipedia content
  • Questions about contacting users
  • Questions about how to cite Wikipedia
  • Linking to or from Wikipedia
  • Technical problems of a transient nature.

The key to handling such tickets is that every reply should be genuinely helpful and give the recipient a positive impression of our conduct and the work we do. If it isn't possible to give meaningful help, or doing so would be unreasonably time consuming, close the ticket without a reply.

[edit] AOL too many accounts

edit discuss

I see you're writing from an America Online address. Users of America Online have an IP address that is shared by many other subscribers; that is, it looks like a large group of people all coming from the same computer. You've run into one of the problems with these shared IP addresses - several people may create an account in a short period of time using the same IP address. You can try again later, or sometimes if you disconnect and reconnect you'll receive a different IP that may not have signed up for so many accounts recently. Please be aware it may take several tries to find an IP address that hasn't registered 10 accounts recently.

I'm sorry that you were inconvenienced by this problem, and hope you continue using Wikipedia. You can learn more about our site and how it works at the Introduction page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Introduction

[edit] AOL/shared/dynamic user warned

edit discuss

Wikipedia is a "wiki", which means that everyone can edit pages. You don't need to apply or to get special permission to join us. At the top of each page is an "edit" label. Try it for example at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Sandbox

It looks like you're editing from a shared or dynamic IP address. A shared IP address may be used by many users from a school, business, or geographic region. With a dynamic IP address each time you sign on, you are signed a slightly different numeric address. This is a very common practice among some Internet companies, notably AOL.

In either case, it looks like a large group of people all coming from the same computer. Since Wikipedia is a site that anyone can edit, sometimes people make inappropriate edits, and in that case other editors need to leave messages for them. Unfortunately, because you share that IP address, you will also see that comment, as we cannot single out that one user to receive the message.

Because of this problem, we put a notice on the talk page to explain that messages may refer to other users. If the message does not apply to you, then you can simply ignore the comment.

If you do not wish to see these misdirected messages you may wish to make an account, even if you never use it for editing. This will give you a personal talk page and will prevent such misdirected messages. You can create an account at: <http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=Special:Userlogin>.

You don't need to log in to edit, but creating an account gives you more options and helps you keep track of your contributions.

You do not need to enter any personal information to make an account, although you do have to have cookies enabled. If you select the "Remember me" option on logging in, you will be logged in automatically each time you visit the site.

If you find your account blocked, please follow the instructions you see in the block message, which you will see when to try to edit a page; it will tell you how to contact an administrator to ask to be unblocked.

I'm sorry that you were inconvenienced by this problem, and hope you continue using Wikipedia. You can learn more about our site and how it works at the Introduction page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Introduction

You may also find the tutorial useful: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Tutorial

Thanks for contacting us, and I hope this was of help.

[edit] Account deletion

edit discuss

Unfortunately our software currently does not permit the cancellation or deletion of accounts. However, you can simply stop using the account. If your concern is the revelation of personal information, Wikipedia does not reveal your real name, email address or IP address publicly. Indeed, after a few months, your IP address will be deleted from our database (provided you do not login anymore).

If any personal information was accidentally revealed on your userpage or user discussion page, please tag it with {{db-author}} and provide an appropriate explanation. One of our administrators will soon delete the page. If instead you revealed personal information on another page, please provide us with the specific details so we can have the edits in question deleted.

Otherwise, all you have to do is stop logging into the account. I hope this answers your question, and I am very sorry if anything that happened to you personally on Wikipedia has led you to no longer make use of your account. If you don't mind, you can email us back with a specific complaint (should this be the case).

In any event, best regards in all your future endeavors, and thank you for using Wikipedia.

[edit] Accuracy of information

edit discuss

Wikipedia relies on the good will and hard work of our thousands of volunteer editors. Although we always have some visitors who insert faulty information we find that the balance is positive and that more people fix problems than introduce them.

We have various tools to help contributors check new edits: we have a "recent changes" page that lists new contributions, and "watch lists" which allow editors to closely monitor pages they are interested in. The editing and verification of the text works on the same open-source principle as other aspects of the site with thousands of contributors visiting the site and checking each other's edits. One of our most important policies is that articles should be written from a "neutral point of view", which reduces the problem of people adding their opinion rather than facts. This policy is explained at: <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Neutral_point_of_view>

Another important policy is verifiability, which states that all contributions should be well-researched from credible sources; information which is not may be removed. We do not allow original research, and we strongly encourage our contributors to cite references for all material added. One of the most important discussions on Wikipedia at the moment is how we can take the project to the next level. We are considering various strategies including intensive fact checking of particular versions of articles, labelling verified versions as "stable", highlighting the best of our articles, and software changes to enable selection between "verified" and "live" versions. Some of this work is already underway; other aspects are still under discussion. We hope that this ongoing work will lead to the eventual publication of a print version or CD/DVD.

However, there is no official editorial team verifying the information in Wikipedia. Our general disclaimer (<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:General_disclaimer>) states that we cannot guarantee the accuracy of any information contained in Wikipedia and you use it at your own risk. It is worth noting that similar disclaimers are found on the websites of britannica.com and bartleby.com as well, which are professionally reviewed.

You can read more discussion of some of these issues at: <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Replies_to_common_objections>

You can also see some helpful guides to using Wikipedia in research at: <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Researching_with_Wikipedia>

Thank you for your interest in Wikipedia.

[edit] Author's claim of license

edit discuss

In order to accept into Wikipedia content which is published on another website, we usually require a clear statement from the author of the content that the content is being licensed under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL) (see <http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/fdl.html>, or <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_Free_Documentation_License>). This statement must come from an email address that we can clearly recognize as being from the operator of the website, or be in reply to a message sent to the operator of the website. This email should be sent to <mailto:permissions@wikimedia.org>.

In addition, we need to know exactly which article or articles contain the copyrighted material in question. The English Wikipedia has over a million articles, and finding the one you're referring to while knowing only the topic of the article can sometimes be quite difficult.

Thank you for your understanding. We do this in order to protect the copyrights of authors who do not wish their work submitted to Wikipedia, and we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you.

[edit] Can I write about myself

edit discuss

As you may already know, Wikipedia is a collaborative encyclopaedia written by its readers. The subjects for our articles are generally chosen by the editing community rather than by request. While there is a venue where you can request articles, a request for an article creation on oneself is likely to be declined. You can visit our requests for articles at <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Requested_articles>.

It's also important to realise that Wikipedia strongly discourages articles written by the subjects themselves or by others close to a subject because of the difficulty in writing objectively about yourself, your family, or your work. Please see <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Autobiography> for our guidelines on writing about yourself or topics you are personally involved with. However, please note that if someone does create an article about you, you should feel more than welcome to edit the article to ensure that each piece of information is factual and complying with our "Biography of Living Persons" policy. This policy can be viewed at <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Biographies_of_living_persons>.

You may also like to read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Criteria_for_Inclusion_of_Biographies and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Importance for some guidelines on the type of articles that are generally accepted.

Thank you for your interest in Wikipedia and feel free to get back in touch with us with any further comments or questions.

As you may already know, the Wikimedia Foundation, like your own organisation, is a charitable entity that relies on the goodwill of our users and friends. Ours is a nonprofit charitable organisation with a very specific goal, which is to develop and maintain online free, open content encyclopedias, collections of quotations, textbooks and other collections of documents, information, and other informational databases in all the languages of the world that will be distributed free of charge to the public. As we are a nonprofit organisation incorporated in Florida, United States, local and national laws prohibit us from using our funds for anything but this purpose.

We recognise that yours is a very worthwhile cause, and we regret that we are unable to assist you.

[edit] Details on information in articles

edit discuss

Wikipedia is a collaborative encyclopaedia written by its readers. The project is a "wiki", which means that anyone visiting the site can edit or add to pages. At the top of each page is an "edit" tab, and clicking this tab allows readers to edit the page.

There is a general introduction to Wikipedia here: <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:About>.

Each article has an associated "discussion page" or "talk page"; you can access this by clicking the "discussion" link at the top of the article. You can then ask a question by selecting the "+" link in the tabs at the top of the page. You will see two text boxes for you to write in: one for a title for your question and one for the question itself.

To find the specific authors of a page, you can click on the "history" link at the top of the article.

Each Wikipedia editor has a personal user page that you can reach by clicking on their name; that user page has an associated "discussion page" where you can leave them messages. These users' discussion pages can be edited in the same way as article discussion pages.

Hopefully this gives you some ways to contact the people who wrote the article, or who have an interest in it, who can address your questions and concerns.

Thanks for your interest in Wikipedia.

[edit] Image adding and uploading

edit discuss

You should first keep in mind that pictures must be justifiable under American fair use guidelines (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_use http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Image_copyright_tags#Fair_use) or a free content license of some kind (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_content). Free content licenses are vastly preferred; pictures with weak fair use justifications and pictures without source information or clear license status will be deleted. Please see our image use policy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Image_use_policy) for further details.

To upload a picture:

1. Login (or create a username if you don't have one) 2. Click on "upload file" in the sidebar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Upload) 3. Select the file from your computer that you want to upload 4. Select a descriptive name for the image 5. Select the appropriate license for the file

To add the picture to a page:

1. Edit the page you want the image to appear on, and include in the place you want the image to appear:

[[Image:(Filename you chose in step 4).(extension of file, case sensitive)|thumb|Caption text]]

2. Save the page with an edit summary that describes what you did (eg. "added image")

You might also find our editing instructions (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:How_to_edit_a_page#Images) and extended page on using images (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Extended_image_syntax) helpful.

Unfortunately, the Wikimedia Foundation is unable to help you with your question.

We do not have any personal details, such as email addresses or other contact information, about the people or organizations that are included in the encyclopedia. The text you see on the site is the only information we have.

If you would like to ask your question publicly of the Wikipedia community, you may do so at our Reference Desk (<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Reference_desk>).

Good luck in your search for this information and sorry that we could not be of more help.

[edit] OMG think of the children!

edit discuss

I'm sorry you were offended by this article. As stated in our disclaimers, Wikipedia contains content that some may find offensive. Our goal is to provide full and accurate information for the education of all. This means that we have text and images that some may feel overly explicit and are not suitable for children.

The inclusion of explicit content has been one of the hottest debates in the Wikipedia community. Some feel that the encyclopaedia should be "work safe"; others feel equally strongly that we should present full information. As always, the content of such articles is a decision made by the editing community - there are no top-down decisions in cases such as this. Wikipedia is a written by volunteers, and these volunteers make decisions on content according to consensus.

On specific articles such as the one you mention, it would be very difficult to give full and accurate information without including <whatever is included>. I hope that you will understand our desire to give all the information available to our readers.

The general advice given by many organisations is to closely monitor /any/ access to the Internet by children. The Internet as a whole is not very child friendly.

I am afraid that the Wikimedia Foundation is not able to help you with this request. As an organization that relies entirely on volunteer work, Wikimedia doesn't have the resources to research questions unrelated to its projects.

However, there is a page on the English Wikipedia where various volunteers try to answer questions such as yours, called the Reference Desk <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Reference_desk>. Instructions for using the Reference Desk are on this page.

Though there is no guarantee that they can provide an answer, they are often able. Please be specific in your question so that others can better assist you! Sorry I couldn't be of more help; good luck in finding the answer to your question.

[edit] Replies to common objections

edit discuss

Wikipedia relies on the good will and hard work of our thousands of volunteer editors. Although we always have some visitors who insert faulty information we find that the balance is positive and that more people fix problems than introduce them. The project was started in 2001 and since that time has grown to over 8 million articles in a range of languages. Many of these articles are of very high quality, others need considerable work.

One advantage of the wiki process is that mistakes can be easily fixed. A print encyclopaedia will also contain errors, but these can only rectified by a reprint and the expense of buying a new volume. Of course, the same advantage comes into play when it comes to time-sensitive information. We are able to update with new information in real time, a real advantage over traditional encyclopaedias.

One of our most important policies is that articles should be written from a "neutral point of view". This policy is explained at: <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WP:NPOV>.

On controversial subjects it can be difficult to ensure that articles comply with this policy, however most of our regular contributors are dedicated to this principle and work hard to ensure that any bias added to articles is quickly removed and repaired.

You can read more replies to common objections at <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WP:RCO>.

[edit] Why was my article deleted

edit discuss

I'm sorry to hear your experience with Wikipedia has been frustrating. Articles on Wikipedia are deleted according to our Deletion Policy: <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Deletion_policy>.

If your article was deleted by an administrator without a discussion, that means the article probably met one of the criteria for Speedy Deletion outlined here: <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Criteria_for_speedy_deletion> If your article was speedy deleted, this may be because it was extremely short or because it did not provide information about why its subject was notable enough for inclusion in an encyclopedia.

If your article was deleted under our Proposed Deletion guidelines <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WP:PROD>, the article was tagged with notification of the proposed deletion for a period of five days, because a nominator believed that it did not meet Wikipedia's inclusion guidelines, and the article was deleted after no user offered an objection to the proposed deletion.

If your article was deleted after a debate on "articles for deletion" (<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion>), it is because members of the community decided that your article was for some reason unsuitable for inclusion; possible reasons include being not verifiable from outside sources, or because it was a page on a person, group, or idea that is not sufficiently well-known for an encyclopedia article.

If you believe after reading the deletion policy that your article was unfairly deleted, you can ask the administrator who deleted the article for a fuller explanation. (You can find out which admin deleted the article by searching for your article title in the deletion log at <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Log/delete>.) If after an explanation you still believe the deletion was unfair, you can bring up the article at Deletion Review (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Deletion_review) where the community can take another look to see if the article was deleted in error.

[edit] Quality

This is the queue for tickets central to the info-en mission, that is:

  • Complaints about article accuracy sent to us by the subject of the article, the subject's representative, or someone else directly affected by the article
  • Reports of privacy violations such as the posting of home addresses or phone numbers
  • Requests to lock or delete articles made by someone directly affected by the article

[edit] Content disputes

edit discuss

Thank you for contacting us regarding the dispute you encountered while editing.

Wikipedia is a collaborative encyclopedia (as explained at <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Introduction>), and so anyone may edit its articles. Its policy, nonetheless, is that articles must be written from a Neutral Point of View, representing all majority and significant-minority views fairly and without bias, as is discussed extensively at <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WP:NPOV>.

However, since article content is not controlled by a central authority, we do not resolve editing disputes via email. Instead, please follow the steps outlined at <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Dispute_resolution>. These steps are designed to help you work with other editors and to draw upon the help of the wider community.

Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia.

[edit] Inclusion of external links

edit discuss

Wikipedia is a "wiki", which means that everyone can edit pages. The content of Wikipedia pages, including external links, is determined entirely by our volunteers rather than any official editorial team. In general, when at all possible, we prefer to include content in the articles themselves rather than linking to external sites. Links are generally reserved for sites that have significant content beyond the scope of an encyclopedia entry, and should be limited to only a few per article. These are usually official or academic sites; other categories such as forums and personal fan sites are discouraged.

For more information about Wikipedia's external link guidelines, please see: <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:External_links>

If you believe after reading this that your link should be included, you may do so. If it has already been removed and you believe it shouldn't have been, please post on the discussion page of the article so that you and other editors of the article can discuss its inclusion.

[edit] Locking articles

edit discuss

Wikipedia policy is that all articles should remain open for editing by our users as a process of continuous improvement. Though in extreme cases we may "lock" pages from receiving edits for a short time, pages are then reopened for editing, as most edits we receive improve our articles. Because of this, we do not lock articles on request. However, we strive to keep articles free of vandalism and inaccurate material.

One of Wikipedia's most important policies is that articles should be written from a "neutral point of view", free of bias or editorializing <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Neutral_point_of_view>. Another important policy is verifiability, which states that all contributions should be well-researched from credible sources; information which is not may be removed, and we do not allow original research by contributors <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Verifiability>. With these policies adhered to, any article about you that appears in Wikipedia should give you no cause for concern.

Although we always have some visitors who insert faulty information, we find that the balance is positive and that more people fix problems than introduce them. Most problems are corrected by other editors within a very short time. We also have a "recent changes" page that allows users to check edits as they happen, and "watch lists" that allow logged-in editors to closely monitor pages they are interested in.

However, should you find any errors or misstatements in this article, please let us know, and we will rectify the problem. Thank you for contacting us about this issue.

[edit] vandalism (offensive)

edit discuss

The article has been fixed.

Wikipedia is a "wiki" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiki), which means that anyone visiting the site can edit or add to pages. At the top of each page is an "edit" tab, clicking this allows the page to be edited. In this way we are creating a collaborative encyclopaedia, written by visitors to the site.

By its nature Wikipedia is open to undesirable edits, but most are corrected by other editors within a very short time.

You are welcome to revert vandalism yourself; in fact, we highly encourage it. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Reverting

While this may explain what happened, it certainly does not excuse the fact that you encountered this on our website. I can only offer you our sincere apologies and assure you that we do all we can to ensure that such malicious edits are repaired quickly.

You can read more about us at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia

Many thanks again for your kindness in writing about the problem you saw.

[edit] You can edit

edit discuss

Wikipedia is a "wiki", which means that everyone can edit pages. You don't need to apply or get special permission to join us. At the top of each page is an "edit" label. Try it for example at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Sandbox

You don't even need to log in to edit, although creating an account gives you more options and helps you keep track of your contributions. You can create an account at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Userlogin

Please see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Welcome%2C_newcomers for more information.

You may also find the tutorial useful: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Tutorial

Thanks for your interest and I hope you join us.

[edit] Reuse

Requests for permission to reuse Wikipedia content, as well as other licensing questions.

In nearly all cases these will get a boilerplate reply. There is a separate queue because some inbound mail may be directed here.

[edit] No live mirrors

edit discuss

In general, it is not our policy to allow people to set up 'hot spider' services, where each time someone performs a search on their site, the query is redirected to our site. Such services add to the load on our servers, even though the end user is not using our site.

Instead, we recommend that you either: (a) use the database dumps, or (b) contact us for a live feed.

For downloadable dumps of Wikipedia's article database, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Database_download as well as http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Data_dumps.

Live feeds are available that provide more up-to-date content and eliminate the requirement to install new dumps. This service involves a financial arrangement as it requires developer time and the use of our servers. If you are interested in this solution, please contact us.

[edit] Permission for image

edit discuss

In principle all Wikipedia text is subject to the GNU free documentation license (GFDL) and can be used free of charge for any purpose. A specific permission for use is not necessary, as long as the license conditions are observed.

For images, however, these are sometimes identified as being subject to other licenses. Therefore it is advisable to check the image information page for the source and/or licensing information. Clicking on the image will lead you to the image information page.

For more information please see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Copyrights

If the licensing conditions of one image do not suit you, it may be possible to contact the author of that image for alternate conditions. See in the description page if the author's name is present.

Please note: Neither the Wikimedia Foundation, nor the authors of articles on Wikimedia sites, nor the volunteers answering on this channel provide legal advice. It is your responsibility, if you intend to reuse content from Wikimedia sites, to determine how the licenses of the content that we host apply to your intended uses.

[edit] Permission for text

edit discuss

In principle, all text in Wikipedia is subject to the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL) and may be used free of charge for any purpose. A specific permission for use is not necessary, as long as the user observes the license conditions.

In order to fulfill the requirements of this license, the following text may be sufficient for online use:

This article is licensed under the [GNU Free Documentation License] (link to http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/fdl.html ). It includes content from the [Wikipedia article "xxx"]. (link to the Wikipedia article)

For printed matter, the license requirements may be more stringent. This involves printing the full text of the license as well as a list of authors. We invite you to consult the license for details.

For more information please see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Copyrights

Please note: Neither the Wikimedia Foundation, nor the authors of articles on Wikimedia sites, nor the volunteers answering mail to this address provide legal advice. It is your responsibility, if you intend to reuse content from Wikimedia sites, to determine how the licenses of the content that we host apply to your intended uses.

[edit] Pop-up browser response

edit discuss

Thank you for providing us with this inquiry.

Please be aware that the Wikimedia Foundation does not require anyone to donate in order to use Wikipedia or any of the Wikimedia projects.

If you are receiving a message requiring you to donate before continuing to use Wikipedia, it is possible that your browser has been hijacked by some kind of malicious program known as "Adware" or "Spyware". Please do not follow any link that appears in a popup window requiring you to donate.

We are currently investigating the problem and hope to have a solution as soon as possible. You may be able to help.

If you are able, please provide us with a screenshot of the pop-up Window, as well as the Browser name (Internet Explorer, Firefox), and the URL to which you are being directed.

We appreciate your help.

[edit] Which article are you discussing

edit discuss

I'm afraid I've been unable to find which of our articles you are writing about. Wikipedia has over two million articles, many on very similar topics, and it is sometimes difficult to know which one of them someone is referring to.

Could you please give us the exact name of the article that you wish to draw our attention to? The article name is given in large, bold characters just above the words "From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia".

Alternatively, you could give us the exact URL of the page. The URL is the web address, which most web browsers show in a long bar above the page display and below the browser menu.

Thank you for your help on this, and I'm sorry for any inconvenience.

[edit] Who is the author/citing

edit discuss

Wikipedia is a collaborative encyclopaedia written by its readers. The project is a "wiki", which means that anyone visiting the site can edit or add pages. At the top of each page is an "edit" tab, which when clicked allows the page to be edited.

There is a general introduction to the site at Wikipedia:Introduction

To find the specific authors of a page, you can click on the "history" link at the top of the article. For the Wikipedia article this is at: en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia&action=history

To cite this article in a list of references, click "Cite this article" from the toolbox on the side of your screen. This will give you bibliographic information as well as citations in several different styles that you can copy and paste.

You may also find Wikipedia:Citing helpful.

If you reply back to unblock-enwiki@wikimedia.org with:

  • your account name (if you have one),
  • your IP address,
  • the administrator who blocked you, and
  • the reason you were blocked

then one of us may be able to assist you. This information should be available to you when you try to edit, after you load the 'You have been blocked' page. I suggest copy-pasting that, to avoid spelling mistakes, and sending us an e-mail with it, along with an explanation of why you think your block is unfair.

[edit] Account Created

The account was created for you. You should receive an automated email soon telling you how to claim the account.

[edit] Tor Block

edit discuss

We're really sorry that you're unable to edit Wikipedia through Tor. However, following some very serious problems with Tor users, including a number of account hijackings, we have had to "hard block" Tor nodes. This "hard block" has restricted editing privileges for all registered and unregistered users. We realize that this is not ideal, but it is the best option available to us at the moment.

You may still be able to edit through our secure site (https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Main_Page).

[edit] Open Proxies

edit discuss

We're sorry, but open proxies are blocked as a matter of policy in order to prevent abuse. If you would like, we can create an account for you so that you may edit. If so, please e-mail us with the user name that you would like.

[edit] Who is the author/citing

edit discuss

On Wikipedia, there is no central authority responsible for maintaining the accuracy of articles. It's a wiki, which means if you see an error or ommission, you can fix it yourself. You don't even have to log in! You can complain about articles on their talk pages, but it's usually easiest to just fix it. Wikipedia gets better only because knowledgable people like you contribute what they know. Please see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Welcome%2C_newcomers for more information.

I have copied your email to the talk page of the article you are referring to:

[edit] Who is the author/citing

Several mails from the daily article list have been successfully sent to your mail service provider. If you are not receiving these mails, the problem is likely to be caused by an issue with your provider (for example, overly aggressive spam filtering).

I would suggest that you contact your mail provider regarding this issue. If they require more information in order to resolve the problem, please feel free to follow up to this ticket. I apologise for any inconvenience this issue may be causing you.

[edit] Other queues unrelated to info-en

  • Junk: Spam queue used to train Bayesian filters. Move blatant spam here. Duplicate, non spam, tickets should be closed or merged rather than junked. Tickets that are related to Wikipedia but undeserving of a reply should be closed rather than junked.

[edit] Proposed template deletions

[edit] Infrequently asked questions.

[edit] Account creation

You do not need special permission to create an account. You can create one yourself at: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Userlogin

If you are having problems creating an account, you may request an account be created for you at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Request_an_account

Thank you for your interest in Wikipedia.

[edit] Advertize on Wikimedia.

Wikimedia sites do not show ads, but you may want to contact sites that mirror Wikimedia content like answers.com (see a list of sites at <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Mirrors_and_forks/Abc>) and place your banner on their version of the //foo// article.

Is explicitly listing answers.com a conflict of interest because of their relationship with the foundation (the toolbar thing and donations)? I only included them because I actually use it as my dictionary and they come up a lot on Google. -- Jeandré, 2006-09-06t11:21z

[edit] Auto-replies at dal-feedback.

Please don't set up auto-replies for email addresses subscribed to mailing lists.

[edit] Delete image

Only administrators can delete items, including images.

You can correct mistakes on the image description page by editing it like every other page on Wikipedia, by clicking "edit this page" at the top while viewing the page. If there is a problem with the image, you can re-upload an image over the existing image by using the same filename (exactly) as the current file. You will get a warning during upload, but clicking "Save" again will save the new file over the existing file.

If there is an error in the filename, you must re-upload a new image with the correct filename and mark the incorrectly named image for deletion.

If you still wish for the current image to be deleted, please put Template:Db-author on the page and an administrator will delete the image shortly.

Thank you for your interest in Wikipedia.

[edit] Email this article.

The wiki software we use does not support emailing articles due to security and spamming concerns about allowing anyone to email an article. It is possible that your web browser allows you to email pages, however.

[edit] IP Block

IP addresses can sometimes be shared by a few or many people. As such, the message(s) left for that IP and the block are most likely not intended for you.

However, there is an easy solution to this problem: Create a free account! It takes just a minute and then you will be identified by your login name and not your IP. Creating the account allows customization of your experience as well. You are not required to edit or participate, you can just continue to read Wikipedia.

I apologize for the confusing situation and hope to see you join us soon!

Thank you for your interest in Wikipedia.

[edit] Logos of Wikimedia, using

[edit] Lost password

[edit] New projects

pasted onto the end of a "thank you for your suggestion" canned response:

If you are proposing an entirely new wiki and you think there is interest you might want to consider using Wikia: <http://www.wikia.com/wiki/Wikia> where new wikis get started fairly regularly. If you think there is really wide interest and the project would be within the scope of the WikiMedia Foundation charter, you can propose it on Meta at <http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Proposals_for_new_projects>

[edit] Medical, experts editing only.

Your project may work as part of <http://www.ganfyd.org/>, a medical knowledge base that anyone may read, but allows only editing by registered medical practitioners.

[edit] Not a foo.

You sent this message to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia <http://en.wikipedia.org/>. We provide articles about all kinds of subjects through the internet. It seems your mail was intended for another organization, company or institution. This might have been one that we have an article on, or one that is being advertised by a website that copies our content. We have no connections with this organization, and are thus unable to assist you any further.

You may wish to use a search engine or other resource to locate the appropriate contact address.

[edit] NOT, doesn't quite fit Wikipedia

//For when people say "how about adding this?" add this onto the front of a You Can Edit reply

I am not sure this content is suitable for Wikipedia as is. We do however welcome addition of items appropriate to a general interest encyclopedia <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:What_Wikipedia_is_not> that are not original research: <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:No_original_research>, are well sourced <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citing_sources>, and verifiable <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Verifiability>. If your material fits these guidelines we invite you to add it yourself.

[edit] Password request, bogus.

You can request that the IP address be blocked at <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WP:ANI> so that the feature <http://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6427> preventing blocked IPs from requesting passwords kicks in.

[edit] Please delete/alter this edit

I'm sorry, but once an edit has been submitted and saved, we can not change the contents or information about the author or delete it for technical and legal reasons.

Your IP address is relatively safe. It would be impossible to connect your IP address to your name. If you are concerned, you should contact your ISP about changing your IP.

We do not release anything about editors except in the terms stated in our privacy policy, available at: <http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meta:Privacy_policy>

[edit] Proxy blocked

Every computer connected to the Internet has a unique numerical IP address assigned to it. Computers can also indirectly connect to the Internet through other computers; a computer network that allows computers to connect through it is called a proxy server. Such proxy servers can be highly useful, but are usually protected so that only authorised users can make use of them. An open proxy, however, is a proxy that anyone can use freely, by design or due to security vulnerabilities. Such security holes are often present without the knowledge of the owner, as in the case with many badly-configured ISP servers.

Because every computer is assigned a unique IP address, an effective method to stop a user who is abusing his editing priviledges on Wikipedia is to block that address from editing. A problem arises with vandals who can change their IP address at will. Open proxies allow this, since connecting through them allows users to edit using that address instead of their own; blocks against that new address can be circumvented by switching to another address, and so forth. Automated scripts capable of doing this are especially disruptive.

For this reason, open proxies are indefinitely blocked from editing Wikipedia as soon as they are detected.

Note: Many Internet service providers rotate customers through IP addresses, so it's entirely possible that you've been temporarily rotated to a blocked proxy. In that case, you should be able to edit again within a few hours or after reconnecting.

If you would like to edit Wikipedia, you can contact your Internet service provider to notify them that their proxy is open. Open proxies will be unblocked as soon as they are found to be closed. Due to the huge number of open proxies, these messages are not regularly sent out.

In certain conditions, you can have special permission to edit using an open proxy. If you would like to request permission, you may email the Wikipedia founder at <jwales@wikia.com> and he will consider your case and make appropriate arrangements.

If you are knowingly using an open proxy to protect your identity, please note that your IP address is hidden when you register a username, and only a select few administrators and developers can check your IP address. Registering an account protects your identity without compromising your ability to edit Wikipedia.

If you suspect that you aren't editing from a blocked proxy, you can request that the IP be rechecked by posting it under "Alerts" at the MetaProject on open proxies. <http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meta:WikiProject_on_open_proxies>
