Proposals for new projects/Disorganized proposals

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Let's start![edit]

proposals for projects[edit]

Wikitorial[edit]

alternate names: (wikidoit doesn't work for same reason as wikidoityourself. sounds too much like wikIDIOT. feel free to suggest a better name. wikidiy, wikiproject, wikido) I would like to propose a do-it-yourself wiki. (I apologize, this seems to have already been suggested. i would like to keep this here, however, because i feel it is more in-depth and more descriptive than the other proposal. I have added the other relevant proposals under this proposal in an attempt to combine the ideas into a stronger, more viable idea.) This wiki would encompass the following topics (and others):

  • Home maintenance (e.g. fixing a leaky drain)
  • Home improvement (e.g. building a deck)
  • car maintenance (e.g. changing your oil)
  • car modifications (e.g. porting your throttle body)
  • building a computer
  • rebuilding a car
  • building construction (e.g. building a shed)
  • building an experimental aircraft (kit planes, ultralights, etc)
  • gardening
  • cooking? this could easilly be its own wiki, as suggested below.
  • crafts (this could encompass things such as soap-making and candle-making, as suggested below)
  • manufacturing (e.g. making your own paperclips)
  • sewing (e.g. attaching a button)

(feel free to suggest more categories)

each category would be structured into subcategories. example: building a house would likely have the following subcategories:

  • roofing
  • foundations
  • electrical
  • plumbing

(and so on)

each of those subcategories would link to more subcategories, and each subcategory would link to relevant parent categories.

each bottom level project (e.g. "wiring a 3-way switch") would have step-by-step instructions, material list, tool list, safety precautions, estimated costs, helpful tips, and links to common related projects (our example would link to "wiring a recessed lighting fixture", "wiring a basic lighting fixture", "wiring a grounded power outlet", "wiring a dimmer switch", "wiring a 2-way switch", and so on)

this site would primarilly give steps on how to actually perform the tasks, but style or design tips can be made available, assuming they do not violate copyrights or patents.

as another aspect of this site, we could list tools, their uses, names, other tools that can be used for the same job, and any other relevant information.

Process Wiki[edit]

A wiki devoted to explaining processes and how to's, for example instructions for joinery or metalworking or cooking ect. could include everthing from photoshop tutorials to instructions on how to upgrade your 54 chevy's drum brakes to disk brakes.

Isn't this basically the scope of Wikibooks, but with a bit more variety? Daniel () Check out Wikiscope! 19:45, 11 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
If the How-to books get kicked off Wikibooks, it may be necessary to create a new Wikimedia project. I do see something like that being created more like how Wikiversity is being created, however, and not through some simple proposal like this. And it will be preceeded by a huge discussion at Wikibooks as well. --Roberth 13:01, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
If it were discreet or distinct in its structure i think this would be an incredible useful addition to the wiki family. What I mean is, Wikibooks and Wikisource are for existing sources or rather narrative sources. This could be for how-tos that are more rigorously structured and procedural. Lists and Steps, rather than big blocks of explanatory text.
Some name suggestions: WikiDo, WikiDIY, WikiDoc? --Disanpoter 17:35, 23 Aug 2006 (UTC)
If this were created, I think recipes should be included as well. I personally like the name wikitorial (wiki +tutorial) for this.

Soap and/or Candle making Wiki[edit]

Although there is a very small wikibook on soapmaking and one on candlemaking, as well as entries in wikipedia, it might be best to give these subjects a seperate wiki project. I belive this would be appropriate given the interdisciplinary nature of the crafts and the breadth of knowledge a wiki of its own would support. For example, soapmaking involves three or more processes, including cold and hot processes and rebatching. It also involves color chemistry, scent chemistry (aromatherapy), a potentially infinite number of soap recipes, moldmaking, all of which areas candlemaking has in common.

Although this project would fit under a larger 'how-to' or instructional wiki, under a crafts section, again I reiterate that having the wiki as a top level project might encourage more participation. Links within wikibooks and other projects should point to this project.

Extremely specific topics such as this should definitly not have their own projects. 12.149.102.66 14:44, 26 July 2006 (UTC)Charlie[reply]
I agree. Perhaps something at Wikia? Daniel () Check out Wikiscope! 20:35, 26 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

For a long time I am after it. This leads to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modelica, or tools used by http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chemical_engineering. Engineers have tried to establish standards and tools like this. What you probably want is an object oriented process-library of the physical world. It means that volonteers have to translate basic processes into a meta-language, which in the end can be combined to new instructions. Indeed, imagine literature digitalized by WikiSource could be processed into those instructions or formulas. --Scoid 11:37, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCalculator[edit]

If there can be a WikiDictionary, why not a WikiCalculator?

WikiTvGuide[edit]

A Listings magazine but then in Wiki-form.

Wikicook-book[edit]

I think that a Wikicook-book should be started. We can have recipes from users (their own works) from around the world. DragonFire1024 22:35, 1 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The catalog will contain more than just print or textual material, though. For example- recorded sound, motion pictures, maps, general realia, etc. Basically anything that can usefully be referenced within a Wikimedia project. Jleybov 21:08, 6 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'd like to see this combined with Wikibibliography and my suggestion of Wikicite above. Having the information to cite a source is only a fraction of the issue. Whether the source is worth citing is most important. --Davidstrauss 20:30, 2 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
See Wikicite and WikiTextrose; I'd be very interested in your input on both projects. Wikicat is intended to be the first stand-alone chunk in a larger scholarly apparatus which can still be useful on its own; for example- it will integrate with the WikiAuthors project to help it meet its particular goals. Naming Suggestions
WikiPrint, PrintWiki, Wikireal, etc
Domain Name
wikiPrint.org
Scope
A charitable venture, by which over a period of time a collection of wikipedia articles are nominated and voted upon for their inclusion in a physical print version of Wikipedia.
Details
perhaps an extra tab would be added to each page, "Nomination". Based on recieving enough votes (possibly in a variety of categories, such as neutrality), a given article would be included in a print edition. The purpose of this is to expand Wikipedia into areas that do not traditionally have information access, either through the internet or more traditional books. This could include remote villages (requiring multiple language editions). A cheaply produced encyclopedia could help spread education further than it ever has. Even underfunded school districts could benefit. Hopefully donations by the public and by publishers would ensure cheap and easy deployment.

  • Details: We could load videos on here like YouTube, but first they're seen by admins for copyright infringement. Then we don't get sued. We also don't let anything non-essencial in Wikivideo (ex: clip of someone looking at urine for 15 seconds and that's it). • I was just thinking of a similar idea to that, only instead of just a collection of clips (that's one of the things that Wikimedia Commons is for), it would be a cooperative effort to create slideshows, documentaries, and other educational films (cooperative as in some people could record narrations, some people could do video recording, some people could write scripts for the narrations and what should be in the video, etc). --Gray Porpoise 17:38, 14 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

WikiEvents[edit]

This idea involves two existing projects, so it was a bit hard to decide where to go with the idea first. Wikimedia appears to cover them both, so I'll try my luck here. ;)

At the time of writing there are not many news articles and there aren't enough editors to cover them all. So, I tried to find a way to make Wikinews a bit more attractive by promoting it in a non-intrusive way. Basically the idea involves enhancements of the homepages of both Wikinews and Wikipedia.

In addition to the current information on the Wikinews homepage it should add a small list of Wikipedia topic titles which are flagged as being current events in Wikipedia. If this extra list is implemented the new style homepage will contain additional links to last minute news often found in Wikipedia articles only. It will add value to the news at the Wikinews homepage and it will supply easier access to background info of current events.

Likewise, Wikipedia's homepage should add a small list of headlines of current Wikinews articles. That way the more popular Wikipedia may attract more interest for Wikinews and it strengthens the feeling of Wikipedia being up to date.

MadIce 15:15, 14 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

it sounds to me like what you are proposing is a drill-down type of news page where you can find out more about everything involved. for example, a news article on a recall for a ford hydraulic motor mount would allow you to bring up a wikipedia article on ford, the affected minivan, and information about hydraulics, motor mounts, and anything else that might be relevant. this idea would be great, you'd be able to easilly find out everything you need to know about the news articles. educational and informative! penjr

penjr... Thanks for your reply.
The main idea is that 1) Wikinews articles get attention in Wikipedia by having links to it in Wikipedia and 2) Wikipedia articles which are flagged as being current events get attention in Wikinews by having links to them in Wikinews.
There are a lot of articles in Wikipedia which are flagged as current events and which are hard to find. These pages are sometimes updated daily and sometimes even minute by minute. Often there are no articles about these subjects in Wikinews.
Also, there might be a Wikinews article related to a subject which is also covered by Wikipedia (but is not flagged as a current event). Currently there is no way to find out that there is news about it, unless you visit Wikinews and search for it.
Look at how the current homepages work: On Wikipedia you'll find a section "In the news". That contains a list of articles flagged as current events. However, these don't end up in Wikinews. The reverse is true for Wikinews articles listed on its homepage.
Obviously you cannot list all these articles and that's clearly not intended. Just a few. Say something like a top 10. MadIce 00:04, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

WikiHealer[edit]

This idea is about giving healing tips for healing from various healing methods for the pople to use.

Being a REIKI, KRIYA REIKI, REIKI DOWSING, ACU-REIKI, CHITI REIKI, VISHITAO REIKI, PRANIK HEALING, AURA HEALING, PAST LIFE HEALING, EMOTIONAL HEALING, INTENTIONAL HEALING, DIVINE HEALING, MANTRA HEALING AND YANTRA HEALING teacher and practitioner, I can contribute many parts of this project. At the same time, visiters of this site that belong to various healing mehods too can contribute into the project.

This can be a very good online first aid guide to people.

I can immediately upload a complete glossary of ailments and reiki healing points for each ailment into the site.

Comment[edit]
A web site about these various tips would be interesting but I'm afraid building a wiki around these wouldn't work. It's possible to gather various data/facts the way it's currently done in the various projects here. Problem would arise as soon as the informations presented in a wiki are aiming a specific goal (healing for example, broadly giving answers about difficult issues). It would be impossible to reach an agreement about any of these tips. If the wiki's goal is not a source of harsh conflicts (cooking for ex.), a database of tips or recipes can be set up slowly. What would you do if someone reverted one of your records or edited a part of these texts ? How would you explain why your facts should be shwon instead of the new ones ?
That kind of arguments can be resolved if the controversy deals with fields of knowledge built on a kind consensus (sciences and their related technologies), I fear it can't go that way with that project. KungFuMonkey sept.06
  • As long as they are well sourced and include sourced pros, cons quoting professional medical information, etc. It could also help identify the fake remedies.--T-man 00:52, 18 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Reply[edit]

True that there are many methods and many opinions. But the antome does not change. If one has a head ache, one has to work on head or liver nd not on the knee. This wiki will take up only those areas of healing that do not raise contraversy. For rest of the areas, we can simply advise to consult a specialist. By this, this wiki can hlp a common man to get a first aid support at any odd hours, but still not make any unrealistic claims and raise a contraversy. Being a Reiki Teacher and healer, I am aware about the extent to which these unrealistic claimers go. So, we can allow edits in this wiky only after approval from those who will maintain it.

free public interest advertising "example:Red Cross"[edit]

It's not exactly a project, but i don't now wher to put it.My asumtion is that wikipedia's goal is to beter the world. It's alredy in the top thing sites,in the internet, look at the revenues from advertising of google. So thers great value,in that sence ,in wikipedia. No,i don't propose anoying spams of,have a peanes inlargement, pop ups,or something like that.I propose ,to give advertisment posibiliteas,to none profit, general interest entities, tsunami like releaf programes,Boinc, red cros , care ,linux and whatever you can think of.All this free of charge,so that,is actially a donation of wikipedia to thiese programmes. In a non desruptive maner to the readers,by let them deactivate them if they wich,by a simple clic(only on time),in the preferences for surfing on the wiki.We all,now how ball braking spam is.The prosses of selection,i guess whould be something similar to the prosses of editing articles,in a decentrilized way,to minimise spamers.I mean advertising of contente, that peopol chould not have problem with(save the planet thing). If you freak out, consider, that my atentions are noble, insted of regecting try to propose, something constructive. In a sence, this is alredy hapening, whith the donation, pleas of wikifondation.(and sory for the spelling)>none registered user "chiken".

I suggest moving it to the talk page (Talk:Proposals for new projects). On the idea, I think that it would become very hard to decide what is public-interest and what isn't. Also - how would it be maintained? How would we ensure that people do not vandalise things? Interesting ideas, though. Daniel () Check out Wikiscope! 07:44, 2 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
hard to decide, only what is concesual, for example the red cross ,do you now many how will doubt this? maintained well I was thinking a similar mechanism then with the articles, the comunity desides on concensus what goes in(we do decide to deleate articles),and then is implemented by admins, not open edit like articles, because yes it whould be a mess with vandals(and bots).Like i said,do you imagine the potential value in advertising of wikipedia,it would be nice if things that whould never had that kink of finacial resources to get coca cola scale of advertising(again, the readers schould have the fredom to block them, don't do in to spam),
There could be a page with links to articles about said organizations, or summaries of articles about them. On this same page, there could be a section for 'recent proposed advertisements', also with links to articles. The proposed advertisements could then be approved or denied by logged in users, and when approved/denied by a pre-designated number of users, 'queued' to appear in the advertising section, or deleted. I believe that before proposed advertisements appear, they should first be approved by three random admins. I would also like to see small business featured locally. -rdrkx80

WikiPOP[edit]

An off-shoot documenting pop culture terminology and modern-day philosophy.

Zana Dark 07:35, 16 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Comments: I may be wrong, but do we not cover this already in Wikpedia? We definitely have a Philosophy Portal. What Makes this idea worthy? How will it benefit the community? Ask yourself. 211.28.125.161 21:33, 23 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I believe documenting pop culture is AS IMPORTANT as documenting history. According to the '10-Year Rule,' that means born in 1996. All modern media falls under this category: TV, Radio Shows, Movies, Music, Books, Art. What I am proposing is that Pop Culture entries have another home: WikiPOP, where the article criteria is much more lax and collaborative. Zana Dark 15:44, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

i feel this topic is too specific to deserve its own project.

wikicommunicator[edit]

This could be a live project giving communication tips on various issues that need guidence in day to day life. This will help people to seek the perfect guidence on facing bad times of dilemmas.

There are issues in life where we need an expert guidence about how to handle a situation. at times, we are not n a position to get an expert counsellor and end up in handling a situation in wrong way.

These are the times where wikicommunicator can be at the rescue of a common man. Here he can get tips for many such situations and knows how he can handle it in the best possible way.

I can initially contribute here from some pages from my own books: "Easy guide to relationship building & Easy guide to peace of Mind". Later readers and other members can contribute into this page as and when need be.

Examples[edit]

Here is the example of communication tips I wish to have in this wiki:

  • PRINCIPLES OF RELATIONSHIP BUILDING:

∞A HEALTHY RELATION ONLY HAPPENS ON EQUALITY BASIS. ∞WHEN BOTH THE PERSONS BENEFIT, RELATIONS STAYS. ∞IF ONE IS AT LOSS, HE WISHES TO BE OUT OF RELATIONSHIP. ∞ONE, WHO BENEFITS, LIKES THE RELATION. ∞FORCED RELATIONSHIP STARTS STINKING WITHOUT LOVE. ∞MINIMIZE FORCED SHARING OF THINGS & VIEWS IN ANY RELATIONSHIP. ∞WHEN YOU HAVE TO SHARE THINGS DON’T EXPECT ANYTHING FROM ANYONE. ∞ALWAYS HAVE OTHER OPTIONS OPEN IN ANY RELATIONSHIP. ∞NEVER FORCE RELATIONS ON YOURSELF OR ON OTHERS. ∞WHEN YOU GIVE MORE SELFLESSLY, RELATIONSHIP IS WARMER. ∞GIVE SELFLESSLY, RECEIVE THANKFULLY. ∞FREEDOM GIVEN ENHANCES RELATIONS. ∞FREEDOM CURBED WEAKNESS RELATIONS. ∞EXPECTATIONS WEAKEN RELATIONS. ∞WARM ASSERTIVENESS BUILDS HEALTHY. ∞PURE RELATIONS ARE ALWAYS BASED ON SURRENDER. RULES OF SUCCESSFUL RELATIONSHIPS: ∞RELATIONSHIPS MAY BE CREATED BY DESTINY, BUT ARE BUILT AND STRENGTHENED BY HUMAN LOVE. ∞BLOOD RELATION HAS TO BE GROUNDED WITH MUTUAL LOVE. ∞THE RELATIONSHIP THAT HAS MORE EXCHANGE OF SPACE LASTS LONGER THAN THAT BUILT ON COMPULSION. ∞COMMITMENT MAY GROUND THE RELATIONSHIP BUT IT BINDS AND REDUCES SPACE AND FREEDOM IN IT. ∞WHEN SHARING IS COMPULSORY, KNOW THAT IT’S YOUR WEAKNESS AND BE READY TO SACRIFICE. ∞IF YOU HAVE AN UPPER HAND IN ANY RELATIONS, DO GIVE SPACE TO WEAKER. ∞IN EVERY RELATIONSHIP YOU ALWAYS GET WHAT YOU GIVE. SO, IF YOU WANT GOODNESS AND WARMTH, GIVE IT. ∞THE MORE SELFLESS LOVE YOU GIVE, THE MORE OF IT YOU RECEIVE. SO, BUILD YOUR RELATIONS ON THE SOLID FOUNDATION OF SELFLESS LOVE. ∞THOSE WHO DON’T HAVE ANYTHING IN COMMON CAN’T GET RELATED. SO NEVER STRUGGLE TO CREATE ANY RELATIONSHIP WHERE THERE IS NOTHING IN COMMON. ∞IF YOU CONSIDER THE OTHER PERSON SUPERIOR, YOU CAN’T PREVENT GETTING BULLIED BY THAT PERSON.

  • DON’TS OF RELATIONSHIP BUILDING:

∞DON’T TAKE ANYONE FOR GRANTED. ∞DON’T MAKE ANY ILLOGICAL DEMAND. ∞DON’T TRY TO EXTRA BENEFIT OF OTHERS. ∞DON’T MISUSE YOUR STRENGTH. ∞DON’T RUN DOWN OTHERS IN ANY WAY. ∞DON’T TAKE ADVANTAGE OF OTHERS. ∞DON’T IGNORE YOUR OWN WEAKNESS. ∞DON’T CAPITALIZE ON YOUR WEAKNESS. ∞DON’T BE UNNECESSARILY SUBMISSIVE. ∞DON’T BE AGGRESSIVE, BE ASSERTIVE. ∞DON’T DENY SPACE TO OTHERS. ∞DON’T LET OTHERS DENY SPACE TO YOU. ∞DON’T DENY OTHERS RIGHT TO EXPRESS. ∞DON’T ALLOW OTHERS TO BULLY YOU. ∞DON’T TRY TO RELATE TO THOSE WHO BULLY. ∞DON’T BE EMOTIONAL, BE ASSERTIVE WHEN BULLIED. ∞DON’T TAKE ANY ADVANTAGE OF THE WEAKNESS OF OTHERS. ∞DON’T TRY TO RELATE TO A PERSON WHO IS TOTALLY NEGATIVE ABOUT YOU. ∞DON’T TRY TO PROVE YOURSELF RIGHT OR THE OTHER PERSON WRONG. ∞DON’T EXPRESS ANY OPINION TO A PERSON WHO IS JEALOUS, SUSPICIOUS, NEGATIVE OR BITTER ABOUT YOU.

  • TIPS TO CHECK THE QUALITY OF YOUR RELATION:

∞A HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP GIVES YOU INNER PEACE. ∞A HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP BRINGS MATERIAL PROSPERITY TO YOUR LIFE. ∞A HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP GIVES YOU GOOD HEALTH. ∞A HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP GIVES YOU A SENSE OF COMPLETION. ∞A HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP HELPS YOU GROW MATERIALLY & SPIRITUALLY. ∞A HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP GIVES YOU PEACE OF MIND. ∞A HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP HELPS YOU HEAL ALL THE OTHER RELATIONSHIPS. ∞A HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP HAS NO BITTERNESS IN & AROUND. ∞A HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP GETS SOCIAL ACCEPTANCE. ∞A HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP IS RESPECTED BY OTHERS IN DIFFERENT RELATIONS.

Twist[edit]

Well, there is TV IV. It is repeating information that is already available in wikipedia. I think they should somehow asociate to avoid repeating information. I would like to see TV IV becoming a WikiTV (in other words, becoming oficial) and wikipedia moving it's TV information there.

The problem with TV information in wikipedia is that some editors often feel there is no place for trivia in wikipedia and erase TV related articles. There is no established guideline or policy against that, but people often vote against such articles. If all verifiable information about TV were condensed in a TV focused Wiki, with redirects from wikipedia. All these conficts could be avoided.

The same thing happens with comics and movies. I'm not familiarized with many music related articles, but I wouldn't be sorprised if I find out a similar issue going on.

Another posibility would be creating a Wiki-Guide. A series of entertainment guides taking the pop culture references out of wikipedia.

Wikiguide could comprehend Video games, TV, movie, comics and music guides very interconected, as there are often adaptations from one media to the other (Batman, Star Wars, The Simpsons, Superman, Mortal Kombat, Mickey Mouse and several others have been adapted to several or all of these media). These guides could be named:

  • Wiki Games/Wiki VG
  • Wikivision/WikTV
  • Wikinema/Wikmovie
  • WK Comics/Wikomics
  • Wikiscography

I hope some project of the sort could be done to reduce Deletionists vs. Inclusionists edit conficts in Wikipedia.--T-man 21:34, 17 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

WikiData[edit]

A Wiki Database System

A Wiki Database System is envisioned as a set of databases, just as Wikipedia is a set of articles. But while Wikipedia articles contain unstructured data in the form of textual descriptions, Wiki Database databases would contain one or more tables, with each table containing structured data.

The Wiki Database system would allow users to search, sort and produce various reports with the data contained in the system. This is something that could possibly be done using Wikipedia, although it would require much more time and effort.

Who would create Wiki Databases? A subset of the Wiki community would be responsible to creating and maintaining the database structures. Database maintenance is an area requiring a certain level of skill and experience, and is generally not something the general public has the skill or interest in doing.

Populating the Wiki Databases would be open to any one. Much of the data would be parsed from Wikipedia articles, and much could be acheived using automated scripts.

Questions like "How many cities in the United States had a population of over 100000 in 1950?" could then be answered quickly using a simple query.

An example Wiki Database:

This is a proposed example of what a Wiki Database might be like, but is not intended to represent an suggested Wiki Database (in other words, this database was chosen as an illustrative example, not as a suggested implementation).

Note that this database, where it to exist, would also be tied to other databases, such as Countries, States, and Languages (and possibly others). And certainly other databases, such as a "Universities" database, might be tied into the Cities database.

Database Name: Cities

A database containing information on Cities.

Table: Names, Fields:

  • CityID
  • CityName
  • LanguageID

Example table entry:

  • CityID: NewYork_NY_US
  • CityName: New York
  • LanguageID: US_EN

Table: Locations, Fields:

  • CityID
  • CountryID
  • StateID
  • Latitude
  • Longitude

Example table entry:

  • CityID: NewYork_NY_US
  • CountryID: US
  • StateID: NY
  • Latitude: 74°00 W
  • Longitude: 40°43 N

Table: Populations, Fields:

  • CityID
  • Population
  • Year

Example table entry:

  • CityID: NewYork_NY_US
  • Population: 8104079
  • Year: 2004

Table: Areas, Fields:

  • CityID
  • AreaInSquareMiles
  • Year

Example table entry:

  • CityID: NewYork_NY_US
  • AreaInSquareMiles: 468.9
  • Year: 2004

In such database can be listet films, too. There you can find the rolse and the actors, directoe, Writer, producers and so on. What about that?

Example:

  • Movie: SAW
  • Year: xxxx
  • Length: xxx
  • Producers:
  • Director:
  • Writer;
  • Music:
  • Cut:
  • Camera:
  • ....

WikiWorlds[edit]

A wiki for creating 3d virtual worlds. It will contain a repository of 3d models (low poly and high poly), textures, sounds, motion capture data, etc... of real objects (like 3d models of real cars) or fantasy objects (like fantasy swords, fantasy characters).

Useful for videogames and computer graphics.

It will accept also articles on virtual worlds, articles about 3d modelling and art, links, etc...

It will contain also description of free fantasy worlds where videogames, computer graphic films, books can set their ambientation.

It will contain also real historical reconstructions for real ambientations (like 3d reconstruction of ancient Rome) created collaboratively and historical documents (scans, photos...) to help the reconstruction.

Similar in the scope with worldforge (http://www.worldforge.org/) but based on the wiki technology.

Formats[edit]

only free formats. Like for example wikipedia:COLLADA for 3d models and png for textures.

Licenses[edit]

Only free licenses accepted (like wikimedia commons).

WikiFlashcards[edit]

I have seen www.Flashcardexchange.com (it costs 20$ fee) and would like such a wiki, because exchange of flashcards is a great idea. Maybe WikiFlashcards could be part of Wikibooks or Wiktionary. But I think a stand alone solution is better. Stefan --84.137.30.3 12:27, 25 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

proposals for modifications or additions to current wikis[edit]

Aramaic/Syriac Wiktionary[edit]

I propose that the should be a new wiktionary intended for aramaic/syriac speakers. I propose that it be titled "syr.wiktionary.org". This would be a good resource for Chaldeans, Assyrians, Maronites, other Syriac speaking people. I do speak the language, know its spellings, and I wish to administate this webpage to prevent false definitions of words or mispelled words. I need to know how to establish this wiktionary and to change the fonts used within it. I am Makkow makkow and i would greatly appreciate the help. Thank you!

Good idea, but move it to Requests for new languages. Dbmag9 20:17, 5 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wiktionary Word of The Day[edit]

Wiktionary has a fully-functional Word of the day feature, and we think it may be a nice idea to include this Word of The Day into the meta newsletter, as Wikipedia, Wikiquote and Wikicommons (AFAIK, I've not read the newsletter before) already contribute to it. Where can I go about suggesting this? Any questions, buzz me on any of my talk pages, or have a word at Wiktionary:Wiktionary talk:Word of the day or even Wiktionary:Wiktionary:Beer Parlour. All the WOTDs have an audio file on them, and are correctly formatted. --Dangherous 20:01, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Proposal for Malay Star Wars Wiki[edit]

Hi, I m Emrrans from Malay Wikipedia. As a fan of Star Wars, I wish to have a Malay Star Wars Wiki. Can anybody tell me where to go and what to do to have a creation of Malay Version of Star Wars Wiki??— Emrrans 16:16, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Get webspace, install Wikimedia, and off you go. The preceding unsigned comment was added by anon user (talk • contribs) .
I would recommend that you look at The Wookieepdia for something like this, and look within that community to expand that to the Malay language if you want to put it into something for your language. I don't see the Wikimedia Foundation setting something like this up any time soon if ever, and Wikia does a much better job for stuff like this anyway. --Roberth 13:07, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

US Cities in French-language Wikipedia[edit]

A bot is currently needed to create articles on US Towns and counties on foreign language wikis. Much of North America is absent from these wikis. Policy has already been adopted in order to counter eurocentric and francocentric editing. ADM

Microformat proposal for marking up taxonomic names[edit]

I am in the process of specifying a formula (a microformat) for marking-up, in HTML, the names of species (and sub-species, varieties, hybrids, etc.), so that such names can be recognised by software and searched, indexed, extracted or aggregated.

The microformat will be an open standard, freely available for anyone to use. It's relevant here, because WikiSpecies is one of the inspirations for it - almost every page on the site, and every page about a plant, animal or microbe on Wikipedia, could use it.

For instance, if I mark up a list of birds using that microformat, you might have browser tool which lists all the species on the page, and creates links to, say their entries in Wikipedia, or the BTO website, or some academic database of your choosing.

Early thoughts are on an editable wiki and need both messages of support (not just "me too"s, but particularly from people who have websites on which they might use them) and, especially, comments and constructive criticisms.

If you know a webmaster who might be interested, or a taxonomist who might be able to contribute to the debate (are there any "edge cases" not covered by the proposal as it currently stands, for instance?), please pass this message on to them. And please feel free to move this to a more appropriate talk page.

Also, please let me know of any mailing lists or web-fora where taxonomical matters are debated.

Thank you.

South Asian Script Enhancement Project[edit]

Background
South Asian Scripts (Devnagari, Bengali, Telegu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, Gujrati, Gurmukhi etc) or Indic scripts are used by hundreds of millions of people around the world. There are 19 wikipediae which use these scripts. However, due to the lack of proper input devices (keyboards), these wikipediae have very limited number of articles which are poorly written. However, this disability can be overcome with an effective software.
Problem
  • Regarding Editing:

Most of the wikipediae suggest for set up of Indic scripts which includes running the setup and then learning the Indic input system. Users from public places like colleges, libraries, cyber cafes etc do not have the admin. facilities to run setup. Besides, learning of Indic script takes some time which further slices down the enthusiasts. Hence, low number of edits and low quality articles are observed.

  • Regarding Searching and surfing:

As the "search" box is enabled in Latin alphabets, the search rarely results in aritlces being shown and are useless at times.

Pseudo-Solution
  • For those who are using Devnagari, a Latin to Devnagari translator is present here. This is the simplest translator as whenever a person types say "ka" in typing box, the result "क" is displated in the resulting box. The resulting text can then be copied in the pages of wikipedia.

Shortcomings:

  • People do not get the instructions to go to the transliteration page.
  • Most of the people still think that they need to learn all the complex input codings to translate there.
  • For a newcomer, clicking in a link which opens a page (that takes time to load) where you type something which can be copied and then returning to the page and then pressing the edit button and then pasting the converted text with a fear in the mind that the whole world will be reading it, is not a very pleasant experinece.
My suggested solution
  • Enabling of the program mentioned above in the respective wikipedia so that whenever someone types "ka" in a wikipedia enabled in Devnagari, the text dispalyed is "क". This should be accompanied with the creation of a "Latin" button in the Editing bar (the one with Bold, Italic and all those buttons) which when pressed, gets switched on so that the text then displayed is Latin. This button is important for insertion of commands as well as phrases and words in Latin scripted languages.
  • For the languages with use of more than one fonts, two search boxes, one in Indic script and the other in Latin or respective script can be put up.
Things that need to be done
  • Development a program like the one mentioned above for all Indic scripts with input method similar to the above.
  • Enabling of the developed software in the respective wikipediae.
  • Running of a test version in Incubator before full scale implementaion
The type of people needed for project
  • Programmers
  • Developers
  • People using Indic scripts
  • People with knowledge of Unicode
  • Interested Volunteers

People interested in joining:[edit]

Comments:[edit]

In principal I support this project , My suggestions are as given below.
As of today article संगणक टंक on Marathi is one of most comrehensive wikipedia articles which gives extensive listing links to online and offline Editors and transiliators.I would advice a sub project for translation of this article in other Indic Language and English.
Once I had spoken with programmer and Marathi Wikipedian ॐकार जोशी and he is ready to support his software गमभन टंकलेखन सुविधा(josh9383@gmail.com) for wikipedia , but I do not know what do we need to do on wikipedia for attching this software directly.
I would be interested to know, how Bengali Wikipedians are coping with this problem?
Besides we at Marathi Wikipedia would welcome any support on spell checkers and spell checker bots.
For time being, Please consider adding devanagari letters at bottom of edit window , this helps minor edits, as this feature is being implemented by Hindi and Marathi Wikipedia.

I support such a project. For example, Amharic Wikipedia has implemented such a system so whenever you edit an article there, the amharic script automatically shows up. Such a system is especially needed for Sinhalese, Oriya, Assamese etc. since I can only see "square boxes" instead of the proper script.

(However, those Users who have Windows XP should be able to see and type the Gujarati, Kannada, Telugu, Marathi, Hindi, Malayalam, and Tamil scripts) --Jose77 07:55, 30 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks a lot Jose for the link. As regards the Indic language scripts, the problem is not just of display but entry of scrpit. Wikipedia does not have a readymade system for entry of South Asian scripts. Very few people use the Indic keyboards. So, its about time that we developed a code/program in wikipedia which enables the entry of South Asian Script from standard English keyboard. --Eukesh 21:01, 30 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I think a check box just like in Amharic is the solution of entry of data. That solves about half of the problem. Now, once we formulate the entry keys and with the help of the Amharic wikipedia, we can start testing. Hence, lets focus on inkeys now. Here is an inkey pattern that I think is the easiest one. Others Inkey patterns can be posted here. --Eukesh 21:23, 30 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Partial success. I am not a programmer but incorporation of a portion of Shree Omkar Joshi's software generates a very few of the characters here. Will have to improve on it.--Eukesh 12:12, 2 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Request for a Urdu Wikiscience[edit]

Dear Sir, My name is Afraz and I came to you with a request to start a Wikiscience in Urdu language. Angela have guided me to request here, my talk with Angela CAN BE SEEN HERE. According to the suggestion of Angela, I have tried my best to work on science topics at the Urdu Wikipedia, an example of my work can be seen in the science category taht is cmopletely DONE BY ME. But I strongly believe that a SEPARATE Urdu Wikipedia just for science is absolute necessity. Name can be Urdu Wikiscience, or any if you suggest another one.

  • I take the full responsibility of keeping the high standard of the contents.
  • I will do my best to make science easy and correct, that can change and improve the minds and life style of people.
  • I will do my best to popularize all the different wikimedia projects too.
  • I will keep all the minute details of scientific terminology both in Urdu and equivalent English in front of Urdu term in brackets.

Please reply here on the same page or at my User page at Urdu wiktionary. Thank You, Afraz MD PhD
