Marcus Cyron

I looked at some sites of WMF and I must say - Statistics are fine, but if nobody makes updates it brings nothing. I would like to update a little bit. I'm Admin at de:WP and there actually one of the Top-10 Contributors (says Kate). If you would know something more about me, the german-language-Chat will help or possible questions to a lot of members. Mail: kenwilliams-1@web.de Marcus Cyron 14:41, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

I can confirm that Marcus is trustable and does a good job as sysop on de.wiki. I think it would certainly be a benefit to have him there to update things from time to time. --Thogo (talk) 15:28, 9 March 2007 (UTC)
I agree - Marcus is a trusted member in de, where he is admin. He is author of severaöl excellent articles concerning greek and roman history and art and he spents a lot of time as admin ans author in de.wikipedia. I personally know him from different workshops and other events. -- Necrophorus 15:35, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

Yonatan

The reason I would like an account on the foundation wiki is for translation purposes. I wanted to do this on meta first before asking (if at all), but the fundraising page, which is IMHO the most important page has an outdated translation so I asked britty where I should do this translation and she suggested that since it's a multi-template page I should request a foundation wiki account, so here I am. Reason
Although I cannot see myself as being exceptionally active on the Foundation wiki, I would like to have the opportunity to engage in some general cleanup, copyediting, and maintenance. With regards to significant copyediting for tone, I will consult experienced Foundation editors with my plans on IRC, via e-mail, and/or on the article's talk page beforehand.
It's not the place for copyediting in principal. See the above also, thanks. --Aphaia 03:38, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
I understand what you're saying and perhaps I wasn't specific enough. I plan on ensuring that specific pages are written not only to reflect the professionalism of the Foundation but also that these pages are easily understandable. To this end, I will be adding content and creating new pages as necessary, and not simply correcting grammatical errors and spelling mistakes. Gaillimh 03:47, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
I have no problem with Gaillimh having an account. Kat Walsh (spill your mind?) 04:29, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
With support of Kat, I have no problem for you now, but still I am afraid you mistook my words. For consistensy and avoid misinformation to the public, unless in the emergency cases (obvious wrong/outdated information), direct editing on the site is discouraged. I prefer you to work on meta under TR/WMF subpages which have served both draft for the website and the source text for translators. One major problem to invite people to edit the website directly, they tend to forget to notice translators their update, and inconsistency and wrong information between languages are spreading. And I hope you agree it is unreasonable demand to watch the website in every hour. Therefore I am hesitant to issue an account for those who love to edit it directly, since from my experience I know such editing will be our burden in a long term, specially for non-English audience, but I don't know every editor agree with me, but that is my basic position. Thanks.--Aphaia 04:57, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
Ah ok, I think I know what you're saying now. I have no problem whatsoever "restraining myself" from directly editing, as tempting as it may be! Indeed, it is quite unreasonable to demand people to watch the website every hour for inadvertent mistakes. Still, I would like an account so I can directly implement discussed ideas on Meta as needed. I'm fairly sure I understand you clearly now (at least I hope I do, and apologies for not getting it right the first time) and as mentioned above, I will always first consult experienced Foundation editors before making changes Gaillimh 20:11, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
Thank you for your understanding, but I myself cannot issue an account for you without your mail address. Without access, you are still invited to draft the content on meta though as well other editors, for your note. --Aphaia 06:30, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

I am perhaps jumping the gun here, but I'm sure a few will recognise my name from foundation-l where I've been active of late. Cary has asked me if I am interested in joining ComCom, I've said yes, and am waiting to see if the rest of the committee wants me. In the meantime I believe it is appropriate to request access. I am admin on English wikinews (See wikinews:WN:A and Wikinews:User:Brianmc) I am an OTRS volunteer and have recently been granted access to the press queue (which, to me, seems to have been a bit neglected). I can't at the moment see any pressing need to have access to the foundation wiki, but have a strong suspicion that it will become more appropriate if I do end up joining ComCom. On Wikinews I also serve on the Arbitration Committee and thus have checkuser and oversight permissions. --Brian McNeil / talk 19:35, 6 November 2007 (UTC)

Slavik IVANOV

I ask for an account to help translating donation forms into Esperanto (I've been asked to do that). I would also like to be informed about the work of the foundation to popularize its success and its plans.

I am an active user/contributor since more than a thousand days before at ru.wiki, eo.wiki and several others; I am an initiator and administrator of os.wiki and an active member of Wikipedia-community in Russia.

My email is amikeco/gmail/com. Slavik IVANOV 12:18, 13 November 2007 (UTC)

Hello, thank you for volunteering to do translations! Translations are actually done right here on Meta. Regular translations are done via T and donation-related translations are done at Fundraising 2007. Also, Foundation discussion does not take place on the Foundation wiki, they take place here on Meta or on the Foundation-l mailing list. Cbrown1023 talk 23:53, 13 November 2007 (UTC)
Hello. Sorry, but since I do not know you personally, do you have editors ready to speak up for you (preferably those who have accounts there already)? Thanks. --Aphaia 23:59, 13 November 2007 (UTC)
I've met Slavik a few times at Esperanto meetings and he is a very trusted member of the Esperanto community. I also depend on him whenever I need a good proofreading of an Esperanto text. You can trust him completely. --Chuck SMITH 11:40, 14 November 2007 (UTC)
I categorically support future participation of Slavik ("Amikeco") in editing foundation wiki. Current translation of the donation form to esperanto language - is its work. I know Amikeco as very good patron of the "small Russia language" Wikipedias and good author and proofreading of Esperanto text. --Kaganer 11:51, 14 November 2007 (UTC)

Wished to comment on a fundraising page, no other specific reason than freedom to post on various wikis. I am an admin for quite some time on en.wikinews and am not particularly hopeful for this application as it is primarily so - when I encounter things like the fundraising page - I can make a comment. I would hope that my edit history and links to ad-hoc projects on the wiki would count in my favour. I'd like to think I can be trusted, but that remains to be seen. :-) --Brian McNeil / talk 22:29, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

EVula

The following discussion is closed: rejected, no support
  • I am en:User:EVula, an administrator on en.wiki (verify).
  • My email address is [removed]
  • Why do I need an account? Because even the Foundation website is in need of wikignomes. :D For example, Local chapters links to it.wiki for the Canino article, whereas Associations locales (the French translation of the page) correctly links to fr.wiki.
    • Question about small part What do you mean by the page links? Canino is where the Wikimedia Italia was formed, therefore shouldn't it link to the Italian wikis page? The French copy links to fr.wiki because it is the non-default translated version into French. :) There really is a method to our madness. ;) I don't see how the it link is incorrect! Cbrown1023 talk 20:01, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
      • Well, there are English, Italian, and French versions of the Canino article. Either the English Foundation page should link to the English Wikipedia article, or the French Foundation page should link to the Italian Wikipedia article. I personally lean towards the former, as there's very little point in reading something in one language and then providing in-text wikilinks to another (regardless of the topic, if I'm reading English, I should still be reading English when I go to Wikipedia). The wikimedia.it link is already in Italian (which makes sense, since it is talking about the Italian chapter).
Further compare the French wikilinks for Eindhoven and Berlin; if it were to follow the current English way of doing things, those links would be to the Dutch and German Wikipedias, respectively, which would do absolutely nothing to assist and inform the user who clicked them (which is the entire point of the wikilinks). EVula // talk // 21:32, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
        • Well... the Wikimedia France has a link to the French Wikipedia as well. The Local chapters page there is the default, so it normally gets links to other languages. Either way, the response you're probably going to get from the account giver-outer is "Do some wikignoming on the Translation pages on Meta first". :) :) I was just confused about your example here. :) Cbrown1023 talk 21:56, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

Girdi

I am a bearucrat on the Chechen wikipedia (ce:Wikipedia:Администраторш) and a sysop on the Faroese Wikipedia (fo:Wikipedia:Umboðsstjóri). I also had temp sysop status of the Sango Wikipedia (sg.wiki) and Luganda wikipedia (lg.wiki).

I'd like to get more involved in the Wiki community, and assist Steinninn in the Icelandic translations, and also translate into Chechen and Faroese since I know Steinninn is a great worker and might not even need help with Icelandic translations, haha, so I am very useful for translations as it is what I am going to university for. I am aware that translations are done here on Meta Wiki. Just anything else involving Icelandic, Chechen, or Faroese business on Foundation I'd definitely without hesitation assist/create . Oh, and also assist in Template:OurProjects-multi too. And the fundraising, and so on. Besides language assistance, I am also planning to join the local chapter of Wikimedia:Ísland (Iceland) and try starting that up. Don't know if it is a valid reason to say that I am absolutely obsessed with Wikimedia (once I had a dream about editing, crazy eh?), and being part of the Wikimedia foundation would mean a lot since Wikimedia has just made it into my heart, aww. ^^ I am according to the English wikipedia a Wikiholic and therefore I really would like to assist in anyway I can (preferbly translation and events) for the Wikimedia Foundation. :)

I don't see why not, he's a good user. --81.15.30.3 01:30, 3 November 2007 (UTC)
Hello. Sorry, but since I do not know you personally, do you have editors ready to speak up for you (preferably those who have accounts there already)? And to anon editor, thank you for your interest, but we cannot consider anonymous comment as efficient endorsement. Thanks. --Aphaia 00:01, 14 November 2007 (UTC)
Girdi is a Wikiholic, true, is that a bad thing or a good thing? Earlier this year in Girdi's case it turned out to be a bad thing. I believe he was to much in love with his project and took ownership of it. He got warned and eventually moved his interests to other Wikimedia projects. It looked like he had learned his lesson, when again similar problems came. Sometimes I felt like he was being disruptive intentionally. Like he had fun having drama around him. Things have settled since then, and I hope that after this second incident he has finally learned a bit, unfortunately him learning his lesson took energy and time from other users that might have been used for other purposes. Luckily a lot of these problems were because of language barriers, since he was working on Icelandic projects. His English I feel is much better, so this should not be a broblem on the WMF wiki. Can I vouch for him as being a trusted user, I'm not sure. Could he help out, yes. The thing is, I can't see a lot of reasons why he couldn't do his edits at the Meta translation pages. So in the end, I'm not sure. --Steinninn 22:34, 15 November 2007 (UTC)
Of course those same incidents that happened Steinninn was at fault too, but like he said it was the past and I think he learnt some things also, and yet he gained an account on WMF. I feel we all have our bad days, sometimes they might hurt our reputation, but the present is what matters. I've put a lot of work into the Chechen Wikipedia which is one of my closest projects to me, and developed it into an alive wikipedia. (With help of course from other great users like MegaProgrammar and Chechenka). Although, don't check the wiki now, its a HUGE mess because of the recent namespace change from Russian to Chechen, a HUGE mess that I have to fix or one of the nice bot programmers can help me do. So in response to Steinninn's vote, no one is a perfect user. Even he had some down moments that I dont really wish to bring up here and now cause its not about him at the moment. --Girdi 20:09, 16 November 2007 (UTC)

Found an error at http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Gu%C3%ADa_de_estilo_Wikimedia wich would like to correct, as with any other problem I might encounter.
OTOH I am a sysop in eswiki and original promoter of Wikimedia Colombia.
Update: Now I am also a sysop at Wikiversity in Spanish.
  • If two different communities trust you enough I think that we should trust you enough to let you become a member. Also are there any other reasons you want to become a member?--Sir James Paul 22:33, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
Trust cannot be transferred. Chlewey, I don't know you, is there anyone who speak for you? (Except Sir James Paul, I don't know him either. He has no good reason to say here "we").
As for typos, you can tweak typos on meta version and request for uploading. --Aphaia 08:28, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
Despite helping to keep tidy WMF pages in Spanish, just as Drini... I am also interesting in translating.
Just a question: what kind of refferences are needed? Most of my maintanence work has been developed in eswiki while little in meta or commons. Do you believe I have to make a name here first?
Chlewey 20:51, 17 December 2006 (UTC)
P.S. as for the typo, in the section "Especificaciones de color", the description of the forth color has a typo. I guess it is a broken line that is breaking the table. "bgcolor" is broken, I guess. I cannot see the wiki code, so I am just guessing.
Thank you for letting us typo, we'll fix them. Just curious, if you are interested in translation, why not join? Here is the place for translation, not there, unless you prefer to make your work locally on your PC. There are right now a lots of translation request, but you haven't showed interest; you made no translation as far as I know, I have therefore no idea if you are really interested in translation. Aphaia
This user is not only a native spanish speaker, but also can help woth sv:, he hasn't showed much interest in editing WMF related content at meta, but should he work a little bit on it for a couple of months he would be great. drini 06:29, 18 December 2006 (UTC)
Thanks Drini for your comment. I'll take it consider. As for my own criteria, see my userpage, there I put some criteria about issuing accounts. Yes, he would be nice and great. His interest may be sincere. But those who I would like to work with are not only whom I can trust but also those who understand the way of our working and respect it. I repeat meta is the right workplace for those who are interested in WMF translation, and I wouldn't like to issue any account to those who doesn't share this idea. It is not a matter of trust, but rather more the way of working as a team. And currently I have no clue if you share that, Chlewey, that is why I nor reject your request and close, nor accept it. We are in a sort of Limbo. --Aphaia 08:27, 18 December 2006 (UTC)
