Requests for new languages/Wikipedia Betawi

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki
submitted verification final decision

This proposal has been approved.
The Board of Trustees and language committee have deemed that there is sufficient grounds and community to create the new language project.

A committee member provided the following comment:

No other issues related to eligibility. If the current contribution continues, it seems that it will be at the approval discussion stage. --Sotiale (talk) 12:39, 21 August 2023 (UTC) – Approved, phabricator:T357866. --MF-W 12:38, 18 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics, recent changes). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
  • The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
  • The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:
What Value Example / Explanation
Proposal
Language code bew (SILGlottolog) A valid ISO 639-1 or 639-3 language code, like "fr", "de", "nso", ...
Language name Betawi Language name in English
Language name Betawi Language name in your language. This will appear in the language list on Special:Preferences, in the interwiki sidebar on other wikis, ...
Language Wikidata item Q33014 - item has currently the following values:
Item about the language at Wikidata. It would normally include the Wikimedia language code, name of the language, etc. Please complete at Wikidata if needed.

If you want, you can enable local file uploading, either by any user ("yes") or by administrators only ("admin").
Notes: (1) This setting can be changed afterwards. The setting can only be "yes" or "admin" at approval if the test creates an Exemption Doctrine Policy (EDP) first. (2) Files on Commons can be used on all Wikis. (3) Uploading fair-use images is not allowed on Commons (more info). (4) Localisation to your language may be insufficient on Commons.
Optional settings

Proposal[edit]

Basa Betawi (the Batavian language) (ISO 639-3: [bew]) is a creole language spoken by 5 million people in Indonesia. Betawi is a popular informal language in contemporary Indonesia, used as the base of Indonesian slang and commonly spoken in Jakarta TV soap operas and some animated cartoons (e.g. Si Doel Anak Sekolahan, Adit Sopo Jarwo). Moreover, there are already a bunch of books written in Basa Betawi, ranging from lexicographic works, religious books, and other popular books, such as:

Lexicographic works

  • Sayyīd ʿUthmān (1887). "Mukhtaṣar al-qāmūs". Batavia.
  • Sayyīd ʿUthmān (1897). "Qāmūs kĕcil". Batavia.
  • Batten, C. J. (1868). De Djoeroe Basa Betawi: Eenvoudige Bataviaasch-Maleisch woordenverzameling. H. M. van Dorp.
  • Homan, J. D. (1868). Handleiding tot de kennis van 't Bataviaasch Maleisch. Joh. Noman & Zoon.
  • Kähler, H. (1966). Wörtervezeichnis des Omong Djakarta. Verlag von Dietrich Reimer.
  • Saidi, Ridwan. (2007). Glosari Betawi. Betawi Ngeriung.
  • Chaer, Abdul. (2009). Kamus Dialek Jakarta. Penerbit Masup Jakarta.
  • Bundari. (2010). Kamus Betawi-Indonesia dan Indonesia-Betawi: Dengan contoh kalimat. Pustaka Sinar Harapan.
  • Sukanta. (2010). Kamus Sehari-hari Bahasa Betawi. Grasindo.
  • Khoir, A. and Widiatmoko, B. (2012). Kamus Dialek Bahasa dan Tafsir Ungkapan, Istilah, Perumpamaan Dan Istilah Melayu Betawi Bekasi. BKMB Bhagasasi.
  • Sunarji. (2018). Kamus Bahasa Betawi Tangerang Selatan. Pustaka Kaji.

Religious works

  • Many of Sayyīd ʿUthmān's works are in the Batavian language, e.g., Zahir al-bāsim, Irshād al-anām, Sifat dua puluh, Cempaka Mulia, etc.
  • Fathullah, Ahmad Lutfi. (2005). Pribadi Rasulullah Saw: Telaah Kitab Taudhih al-Dala'il Fi Tarjamat Hadits al-Syama'il Karya Guru Mughni Kuningan [1860-1935]. Al-Mughni Press.

Popular works (including literary works)

  • Holle, K. F. (1885). Dongeng monjet dengen koera-koera. Translated to Batavian by A. F. von de Wall. G. Kolf & Co.
  • Tan Tengkie. (1891). Albrecht & Co.
  • Beramka, A. (1906). Sa’ir Perang Ruslan dan Jepang. Betawi.
  • Muntaco, Firman. (2006). Gambang Jakarte. Penerbit Masup Jakarta.
  • Ardan, S. M. (2007). Terang Bulan Terang di Kali: Cerita Keliling Jakarta. Penerbit Masup Jakarta.

(*) Note that besides the afore mentioned works, there are still other unmentioned here.

However, facing a rapid development of globalisation, this language still needs to be preserved and Wikipedia is one of the best methods in digital language preservation, besides its main aim to spread literacy and knowledge by means of an online and free encyclopaedia, i.e., to encourage people to use the language in broader field.

Moreover, the localisation requirements in basa Betawi has been done for 16% from all MediaWiki keys and already can be used as an interface language on Wikimedia Incubator, but the completion progress is still ongoing.

Discussion[edit]

I would like to ask when will this Wikipedia be approved as it has been active with several people working on different articles on a daily basis for a period of several months. --Caro de Segeda (talk) 13:48, 6 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Supporting the question that @Caro de Segeda has said previously, I would like to inform that we have already 1,100+ articles in [bew] and this wiki has been active since June (as noted on Catanalysis) with several contributors. Besides, localisation requirement seems to be fulfilled (already 20% of total keys). Moreover, gladly, we have already an active community in Jakarta, i.e., Wikimedia Jakarta, under Wikimedia Indonesia, who are helping us in this project currently and for later development.
Gladly, beside Wiki projects, our CLDR locale project for [bew] has been accepted for the next version (version 44) as in here https://unicode-org.atlassian.net/browse/CLDR-16757.
Thank you. Bangrapip (talk) 14:09, 6 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I plan to start approving this at the start of November. --Sotiale (talk) 02:17, 9 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, @Sotiale!
I would like to ask something about the project. I've just checked on https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Category:Betawi_language in the tree family section, there are three dialects of Betawi:
1. Betawi Kota (bew-kot)
2. Betawi Ora (bew-ora)
3. Betawi Udik (bew-udi)
What do (bew-kot), (bew-ora), and (bew-udi) stand for? Are they "sub-codes" of the language? And is there any possibility for Betawi Wikipedia in the future to have dialectal versions as in Balinese Wikipedia (e.g. https://ban.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikip%C3%A9dia_basa_Bali)? If yes, what are the requirements? Thank you.
P.S. Balinese Wikipedia has Latin Balinese, Balinese in Balinese script, ban-x-dharma, ban-x-palmleaf, ban-x-pku and can be switched into another version. Bangrapip (talk) 07:34, 23 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
AFAIK those are dialect codes. What Balinese Wikipedia has are variation of writing scripts, not dialects. dwadieff 07:39, 23 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
For them to be something independent, they basically have to be assigned an independent ISO 639-3 code, and the dialect must actually be a language, distinct from other dialects. --Sotiale (talk) 12:30, 23 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the explanation.
Bangrapip (talk) 12:38, 4 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, @Janwo and @Sotiale, I apologise for taking your time.
If you don't mind, I would like to ask any news regarding the approval process for this Wikipedia that we have been waiting for since November. Thank you. Bangrapip (talk) 08:22, 15 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
