Requests for new languages/Wikiquote Sanskrit

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki
submitted verification final decision

This proposal has been approved.
The Board of Trustees and language committee have deemed that there is sufficient grounds and community to create the new language project.
  • The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics, recent changes). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
  • The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
  • The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:

Sanskrit is a classical language and has many quotations in epics like Mahabharata, Ramayana, Gita, etc. Sanskrit has a lot of quotations from historical persons. Wikiquote can be a platform for these quotations.

Arguments in favour[edit]

  • Sanskrit has many quotations {shlokas}. We should really open Wikiquote Sanskrit. Vibhijain 11:01, 16 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Sanskrit has such a strong presence that almost 200,000 people in India mark it as their native language, even tho it is a dead language. I think that it should be given an own wikipedia domain since it is a comparable language to what latin is here in the west, but with an even stronger knowledge base and wider knowledge of the language, by far. We have seen the latin wikipedia flourish, as far as an extinct language wikipedia can flourish, and I think a sanskrit wikipedia could do even better by leaps and bounds. It would be a real mark of honor and a strong promotional tool in the emerging IT-market of India to have wikipedia be the first really major source of new sanskrit text in a thousand years. (Edit:) To clearify, this means that I think we should have a sanskrit wikipedia, but more to the point a sanskrit wikiquote is really very due :-) The preceding unsigned comment was added by Spreetin (talk • contribs) 01:15, 6 April 2011 (UTC).[reply]
Sanskrit Wikipedia already exists. Jafeluv 17:42, 20 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • I strongly support the creation of Wikiquotes in Sanskrit. This will serve as a repository of innumerable quotes in Sanskrit.--Naveen Sankar 02:43, 16 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Sanskrit is the mother of all languages spoken throughout Indian subcontinent and beyond. Must be given due impotrance she deserves The preceding unsigned comment was added by Advokatdeville (talk • contribs) 06:59, 9 April 2011 (UTC).[reply]
  • This Wikiquote, if created, has a lot of potential to become a very large and informative project. I am definitely in favour. Yes Michael?Talk 14:28, 20 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • It is important to note that Sanskrit has a large repository of quotes and quotations. In fact, most of the literature is written in form of verses which are widely quoted in Indian culture. I can foresee Sanskrit Wikiquote becoming the biggest repository of quotes than any other Indian language, leave alone others. I look forward to contributing to this Wikiquote - Harshavs 17:10, 21 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • I agree with arguments in favour--Mayur (talkEmail) 15:44, 24 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Sankskrit has a large collection of quotes. and it will be great to have a seperate wikiquote for sankrit. Hrishikesh.kb 16:35, 21 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Sanskrit has a very good potential as it has plenty of speakers, and also if you're Hindu, you can get quotes straight from many Hindu works because it is the liturgical choice of language for Hinduism, as well as Buddhism and Jainism . Starwarsroxmy1

Arguments against[edit]

I think you'll have a hard time finding any natives of Sanskrit. Having said that, I would like to see some good quotes in the test wiki. Yes Michael?Talk 12:21, 20 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
