[edit] Notes to consider

  • Hosting: Wikimedia Foundation is not a free hosting company for any kind of wikis. If your project does not fit the Foundation's ideals, try a wiki hosting site such as Wikia, ScribbleWiki or wikidev.net (see a list of wiki hosts with reviews), or download and host MediaWiki yourself.
  • History: Individuals attempting to create a new project should read the Wikipedia timeline and Uses of a wiki.
  • Be persistent. Don't take criticism personally. There have been mistakes in the past in regards to starting up new projects, and some users are afraid of repeating those mistakes. New ideas are taken seriously, though the process of going from an idea for a new project to actually turning on a server takes quite a bit of time and effort. Be prepared to take some "arrows" in your back, a lot of criticism, cynicism, and outright disbelief that your ideas are going to work. If it really is a good idea, there will be others willing to help you out! So, be persistent.

The last major project that made the jump from a project idea to something going on its own was Wikiversity. To see how a project idea has been successful, look at what was done to go from idea to an actual project with the project proposal page for Wikiversity. In particular, check the history and look over the complications they went through before going "live". Projects that don't live up to this sort of standard for coming into existance will likely not be considered as a new project by the Wikimedia Foundation. Don't get discouraged, but it is not going to be easy either.

If you see something that doesn't fit into any current Wikimedia project, could be done using MediaWiki software, can be distributed using the GFDL (or very similar license) for republishing, please add a suggestion below.

[edit] Existing projects

Before proposing a new project, make sure it doesn't already exist; see the list of existing projects below (and also here).

Many common proposals are best merged into one of these three:

  • Wikipedia: Wikipedia lists its subprojects at WikiProject. Many proposals could be incorporated into an existing one, or a new WikiProject could be started instead. Wikipedia is evolving, and much can be adapted from its current content and subcultures.
  • Wikisource: Wikisource has a similar list of larger subprojects. These focus on original source material that will require quite a bit of effort to transfer to that project. Historical dictionaries, encyclopedias, or other multi-volume reference works of a historical nature could go there.
  • Wikibooks: If you want to put together a large collection of factual information into one place, starting a Wikibook may be a good place to begin. If it doesn't quite fit Wikibooks, the other editors at Wikibooks can help you find the correct place as well.

[edit] Instructions

  1. Read the detailed information on the policy page.
  2. Create an account and a user page on this wiki, so people can address their questions to you.
  3. Create a page here at Meta where you describe your plan in detail and add this to the Proposed projects category.
  4. Add your proposal to this page using the recommended format.
  5. Advertise your project. Good places to do so are on Goings-on and on the Foundation-l mailing-list (account needed).

Link the title of the new section to your page, and use this template when adding a new project: {{Newproject | proposers = | date = | names = | domains = | scope = | demos = | related-projects = | mailinglist-link = }}

Overview A wikipedia version for kids aged between 8 and 13 years old with specific themes and in a simple language. Children so as teenager and adults should be welcomed to edit the articles and help with the other wiki task.

  • Talk:Wikikids
  • Differences between wikikids and wikichildren proposal: wikichildren offer to create different account for adults and children, the last having less privileges.
  • I would like to make a comment. I am a kid, and Simple English Wikipedia is simple enough for kids in my estimation. We also have wikijunior. To me, I also don't see it as good for the children's accounts to have less priveliges (sp?) because kids have the ability to do the same things adults do, like run their own wiki (that is mine). The encyclopædia should have no one below, no one above. Ionas68224 06:54, 15 August 2007 (UTC)
Hi, Simple english WP only exists in english (yes !) They were no other simple language wikipedia opened after it. On the "demo" site in french, children don't have less privileges, the younger just are less likely to become sysop, that's all. Astirmays 18:59, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
Simple English wikipedia is not necessarily for children, but for none native speakers of English. Redrocketboy 15:53, 10 December 2007 (UTC)

  5. JJohnson1701 - definitely. Something where we can pull up a map of, say, England, and click on the language links to see the names in foreign languages, and click on that language's article on that city, village, or whatever. That'd be awesome. Perhaps it would need a list of the places, perhaps in system messages, and then a translation as well.
  6. JosN A Wikiatlas exists on Commons already. That could be transferred to a new Wikiearth, Wikiatlas or whatever. A atlas with a lot of information does not seem logical to me for Commons, so, a new wiki would be preffered, I guess.
  7. User:WikiEarth I really like the idea of having a wiki atlas, even before I saw this proposal. I made my own wiki called wikiearth if you want to check it out.

Proposers Andrewdt85 - email: andrewdt85@hotmail.com (5/26/06).   Mailing list request:
Overview This would basically be like Wikipedia- a communal brain, a pool of knowledge and wisdom- but this Wiki would be a place for all that knowledge and wisdom that's a.) not good enough for Wikipedia ('List of Pickup Lines') and b.) not verifiable enough for Wikipedia; it would contain opinions often (not the same as Wikiopinions proposed above), and debatable material, so users of this site would have to be able to not freak out about biased knowledge/wisdom.

Should be part of Wikisource. Pcu123456789 03:57, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
  • I would like to mention that this is a perennial suggestion to have some project related to the formation and distribution of musical content, with suggestions to have different markup systems within the MediaWiki software and to even be able to edit MIDI files or musical scores. There certainly are some interesting things that could be done with music in a collaborative fashion, and this particular project should not be completely dismissed. --Roberth 17:56, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
  • (In response to Pcu123456789) This should not be part of Wikisource. When people think of a library, they generally think of books, not sheet music. Putting this at Wikisource would cause it to be neglected. This should be it's own project. Galanskov 21:51, 12 April 2007 (UTC)
Actually, my public library has a whole wing filled with sheet music, scores and scripts. Perfectly reasonable contents for a source repository, although it is probably true that having this as a separate project would probably guarantee more traffic and more care.--starfarmer*comm 10:34, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
Although it is going in a slightly different direction, you might want to take a look at [4] Topic is "Facebook choir/band/something like" in the Facebook group "Join this if you've played music with someone in it..." The group of ~35,000 members is looking into ways to collaboratively record (and potentially write) music. I think it could be tremendous if som:eone familiar with how to organize such a project got in touch with this group! Cmadler 16:31, 20 April 2007 (UTC)
  • IMSLP is a wiki based on the free sheet music on the internet with tremendous coverage, having extremely obscure pieces and most if not all of the main composers' works. The subject is not narrow, in my opinion, but many people could not participate without knowledge of notation or composition. Alton 04:18, 3 May 2007 (UTC)
  • IMSLP has some problems now. Maybe Wikimedia should help? Kj 19:45, 20 October 2007 (UTC)

Since IMSLP still has problem, may be it is time to revive the discussion on this project? see Wikimusic_II and WikiScores 82.124.131.76 21:16, 31 January 2008 (UTC)

  • It would be nice to have an easy way to make sheet music and MIDI files (maybe even with the same code). I've never heard of IMSLP, but I was using [5], which seems somewhat similar, recently, I found some music on it that I wished to play, but it was formated wrong for my instrument. It would have been nice have an easy way to change this, such as a wiki. Jkasd 01:01, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

Overview A free wiki about linguistics (grammar [syntax, usage, PoS] and orthography [spelling and pronunciation]). It will be divided into the subsections for grammar and orthography, and sub-subsections for spelling, phon(et)ics, syntax, and usage. Basically, Wikiproject Linguistics (which grew too fast), and the Linguistics sections for Wikibooks and Wikisource all combined into one, plus a unique section for etymologies. This'll probably grow big, too!

If you could advise what moments i should pay attention especially if im creating wikiversity based on real university? It should be just portal in wikiversity.beta(Becouse language is Russian) or better be self-dependent project based on wikimedia engine downloaded from mediawiki website?

How to integrate my initiative of digitizing the real universtity courses to wikipedia format with main website wikiversity.org? For example history of computing course in our university is different from existed here already, so i should to do second version of it? --miostyle 14:12, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] WikiCurriculum

Proposers Marty - weissman.marty at gmail.com (September 1, 2007).   Mailing list request:
Overview A semantic framework for the development of flexible curricula and texts, in high-school mathematics (Algebra I - Precalculus) to begin with. It will be structured around three core concepts: blocks, facets, and threads. A block will be a unit of mathematical or pedagogical material (such as solving systems of linear equations). A facet will be a way in which to view the material (for the student, teacher, professional developer, mathematician, math historian, curriculum-developer, etc...). A thread will be a collection of blocks, linked with a purpose in mind, such as a coherent Algebra I curriculum, or a mathematically rigorous development of plane Geometry, or a short course for middle-school teachers. Using semantic data (RDF triples), not only will the mathematical content be available, but also there will be information about which mathematical material must be understood before which other material (pedagogical dependency), as well as logical/mathematical dependency, and which problems assess/require which concepts. In addition, semantic data would encode which blocks correspond to NCTM (national) U.S. standards and state (California, Texas, Massachusetts, for example) standards. Standards from other countries will also be added.

In this way, a school district can build a curriculum, and perhaps a textbook, by snapping together blocks, ensuring all standards are satisfied, and ensuring that the material is presented in a pedagogically sound way. Or, for example, a teacher educator can build a curriculum for a short professional development course. Or, for example, a homeschooling parent can develop a sound curriculum for their child.

Overview Similar to Wikipedia, its like an encyclopedia. But its article names will be questions, such as "What is the Big Bang?", then on the article page the question will be answered. This is useful because sometimes people search in questions instead...

  • Usefully in my opinion, because when people try to look up something in the internet they are searching for the answer of a question. I noticed when searching in the internet there are questions which wikipedia is not answering. Those are the "How"-questions like "How to delete a file in bash" etc. Those questions are answered by forums. The future of WikiFAQ can answer these questions. Thus, i think, the future of WikiFAQ can have a greater scope of information than any forum or Wikipedia.

[edit] WikiTimeLine

This proposal has been fabricated into a MediaWiki extension!

Proposers DontPanic (22 April 2008).   Mailing list request:
Overview Begin and End time of events or people can be added to Wikipedia through a template which produces a link to WikiTimeLine. Those events or people will be added to the timeline of WikiTimeLine (by following this template-link) and can be viewed on this timeline on which they are displayed. An example of how it can look like is WikiTimeScale, but the events and people (and their begin and end dates as well as their description) wouldn't be stored at WikiTimeLine but at Wikipedia, and would be managed there.
Demos:
Other names WikiTimeLine.   Potential domains : http://www.wikitimeline.net (already registered by proposer, currently redirecting to WikiTimeScale but may be used for this project instead if accepted).
