This page hosts requests for a username change. Please read the instructions before posting a request. Global username changes may also be requested here to be done by stewards and global renamers.

This is also the page where stewards can be requested to deal with problems relating to the unified login feature. These include:

  • Usurpation of accounts
  • Deletion of global accounts
Cross-wiki requests
Meta-Wiki requests

Before posting here[edit]

Please list specific projects that you need rename in under your request, unless you are requesting a completely global rename.

How to add an entry here[edit]

To add an entry, please copy and paste the text below into the appropriate section.

=== Oldname@global ===
 |status     = <!--don't change this line-->
 |domain     = global
 |Oldname    =
 |Newname    =
 |confirmation = [https:// diff-link to the local request on your local talk-page for example]<!--Local request link-->
 |reason     = (your remarks here)

For example:

For global rename requests:

=== Example@global ===
 |status     = <!--don't change this line-->
 |domain     = global
 |Oldname    = Example
 |Newname    = Foo
 |confirmation = []
 |reason     = <your remarks here>

Making a request for your own account[edit]

For changing your username on one wiki:

Please include the following information in your request:

  • the old username,
  • the new username,
  • a link to the (old) user page, where you put a formal request with your account

If anything is missing from your request, a steward will request more information. Please don't skip the last point, even if there's no community on the project. This helps ensure that you are requesting a rename for your own account. Please check before posting your request that the username you want is available. You can test that by going to the (new) user page and looking into the sidebar. If there is a link to user contributions, the account already exists, or check via Special:CentralAuth.

Making a request for an account that is not yours[edit]

If you want to have an account renamed because its name is harrassing or insulting, or if it impersonates you or someone else, please include the following information in your request:

  • the account's name, including a translation into English, (if it's harrassing or insulting),
  • the impersonated account (if the account is impersonating), this can be cross wiki.

If anything is missing from your request, a steward will request more information.

Private requests[edit]

Requests that need to be made in private should be sent to stewards(at) (direct wiki interface).

Simple rename requests[edit]

If your rename request requires no stewardship, you have two options:

  1. If your rename request requires no stewardship, you have two options:
  2. Use the (new) request form at Special:GlobalRenameRequest; or

Utilise the manual process outlined above, and submit it below in this section.

Requests involving usurps or other complications[edit]

Please add new requests at the end of the section. Sections should be titled your username@global and requests should be signed by both the source (from) and target (to) user accounts.

Is there somewhere a confirmation that you own the both accounts? Also, do you want to get those both accounts' edit histories merged into one account after account merge is possible? --Stryn (talk) 19:13, 28 April 2015 (UTC)
@Bogdan: please login to this account and confirm that you wish to have this account to be the target of the merge}}.  — billinghurst sDrewth 12:15, 5 May 2015 (UTC)[edit]

Stewards are unable to return the account to you. You would need to pursue such a request through Wikimedia Foundation, and initially through a phabricator: request, though you could seek advice through Stewards' noticeboard about the matter. We could merge these accounts to Martinwguy2 if you can login to each of the above accounts, and confirm them that they should be merged.

If you ever satisify WMF to assign the Martinwguy account to you, then we can merge usernames at that time.  — billinghurst sDrewth 03:36, 15 May 2015 (UTC)

It is sitting in a subpage waiting for action. @Trijnstel:  — billinghurst sDrewth 12:56, 17 May 2015 (UTC)
I've just looked into these two global accounts and there's something that I don't understand: Special:CentralAuth/Vorlage~dewiki, Special:CentralAuth/Vorlage. I didn't notice by now that there is a new local account for User:Vorlage at dewiki since 25 April. That's quite strange, because there is no log entry in the user creation log for that. There are a few new local accounts now: for User:Vorlage „, 19:47, 25 April 2015“ without log entry, and for User:Vorlage~dewiki 19:47, 25 April 2015, 19:48, 25 April 2015, and 19:57, 25 April 2015. User:Schwalbe told on 20:04, 25 April 2015 that he could login "and just tried successfully", but could not use the name ("Yes, the user is a legal "sockpuppet" of mine and I still can login and just tried successfully. But the user rename request form does not allow me to use the old name again. --Schwalbe (talk) 20:04, 25 April 2015"), I think that he must have created the local account de:Benutzer:Vorlage again with the old password of the renamed de:Benutzer:Vorlage~dewiki. Does this mean that the passwords of both global accounts are the same now? Or can it be that the local accounts of User:Vorlage in dewiki and dewiktionary have two different passwords? This seems to be strange, because the global user which owns the account de:wikt:Benutzer:Vorlage obviously was another one and has nothing to do with the dewiki account. Or has that account got the same password as the new local dewiki account and also the same as the renamed account? I've never seen such a thing before. Is it possible for renamed users to create new local accounts with their old names and that no log shows this user creation in any way? What has happened here and what will be done with this now? --Winternacht (talk) 18:21, 17 May 2015 (UTC)
The local account Vorlage on dewiki was created automatically when the user who owns the global account Vorlage logged-in and visited dewiki. Ruslik (talk) 19:35, 17 May 2015 (UTC)
As Ruslik says all we can fully say is that someone has the account name Vorlage and has successfully logged into it recently, and it is the global account; checkuser checks would tell more, though does not seem warranted. If the same person has the accounts across deWX sister wikis, they should request a merging of accounts here, with the requisite confirmatory edits from the accounts.  — billinghurst sDrewth 22:05, 17 May 2015 (UTC)

  • Hpa~enwiki, you may wish to make it clear whether you desire to be renamed to "HPA" (which conflicts with an inactive user) or your previous "hpa", which is conflicting with an active user. –xeno 13:46, 22 May 2015 (UTC)
  • I did not realize that user names were case sensitive. Either alternative is perfectly fine with me. Hpa~enwiki (talk) 17:44, 22 May 2015 (UTC)
You should probably ask user:HPA if they agree to be renamed (and wait some time for an answer). Ruslik (talk) 20:22, 22 May 2015 (UTC)

Nevertheless the account 江 already exists, so, you would be better to choose a different name. Ruslik (talk) 18:56, 23 May 2015 (UTC)
I know, but "江" this account almost no edit records. And I like this name very much, because I am a Wikipedian from China. --J2w1 (talk) 15:13, 24 May 2015 (UTC)
  • @Kegns: please take a look at this request. The requested username was registered 08:50, 11 June 2007 and seems to have never been used so may have qualified for usurp previous ja:WP:USURP. –xeno 12:50, 25 May 2015 (UTC)
    • @Xeno: Hi, per our old usurp policy, in this situation, the 0 edit user will be notiftied, if there's no responding in 7 days the username can be usurped. Now I have done the notification locally but I don't think the user will respond :) --Kegns 13:30, 25 May 2015 (UTC)
