Stewards are elected whenever it seems necessary, usually once or (less commonly) twice a year.

Stewards are elected at least once a year by the global Wikimedia community. The number of stewards is not limited by policies. Candidates must have at least 80% (4:1) support/oppose ratio with at least 30 supporting users in order to pass. Current stewards are confirmed once a year (usually in February), and stewards are subject to the steward policies.
