Talk:CentralNotice/March 2011 Update

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Dutch banner contains annoying spelling mistake[edit]

The Dutch banner contains an annoying spelling mistake

I changed the main (first) line to:

"Help mee om het volgende hoofdstuk van de Wikimedia-geschiedenis te schrijven"

It's changed on:

http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/CentralNotice/March_2011_Update#nl

but it still shows:

"Help mee het volgende hoofstuk te schrijven in de geschiedenis van Wikimedia"

and this shows up here:

http://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:NoticeTemplate/view&template=March2011Update&wpUserLanguage=nl#mw-centralnotice-translations-for

But I can't edit there.

Could a moderator or admin plz change it to the correct version?

If the line is too long remove the word "mee" (though it reads better with it).

Thanks! SpeakFree 21:13, 11 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

BTW: the error also shows up in other browsers (and I had purge Firefox's cache) so it's not browser/cache related.

Thanks for fixing it! SpeakFree 22:13, 11 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

still don't know how to translate[edit]

i just got amused... where is the translating page and how could we start??? lol.--Gnaggnoyil 23:54, 12 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

How to translate what? The CentralNotice or the letter? Cbrown1023 talk 02:14, 13 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
well,the letter.Gnaggnoyil 03:13, 13 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
What language? Cbrown1023 talk 03:18, 13 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
language code: zh-hant. i've translated half of it...Gnaggnoyil 03:22, 13 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It looks like you're doing it pretty well. :-) You just put the translation in the zh-hant section and then change the status to "ready". One of us will then publish it. Cbrown1023 talk 20:52, 14 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Before I re-publish these notices[edit]

Before I re-publish notices in languages listed in below paragraph I need to ask the following question: should "Wikimedia Foundation" also be translated or remain non translated as user User:Ælfisc wrote in the explanation of his fr notice revert (please see the edit made on 11:47, 13 March 2011)?

Until someone answers this I am temporarily putting notices in Bosanski, Hrvatski, Slovenščina, Srpskohrvatski, Srpski and ‪Srpski (latinica)‬ languages from "published" to "ready" status. --Wayfarer 02:43, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Technically it shouldn't, since the local translation for "Foundation" usually refers to a specific type of Foundation in that area. Sometimes when people translate "Foundation", it turns the sentence into something that's not true. For example, the Wikimedia Foundation is an American "foundation" (it fits the legal definition in America), but it might not necessarily be a French "fondation" (it's not registered under/run by French charity laws). Although it's technically not supposed to be translated, we usually don't care if people translate it and don't make a huge deal out of it. (Transliteration, on the other hand, is almost always fine.) Cbrown1023 talk 20:57, 14 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the reply, well someone already beat me to it and changed the statuses back to "published". --Wayfarer 02:43, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hebrew and Yiddish[edit]

I have made some style corrections to the Hebrew and Yiddish banners. There were no errors in the translations, but certain style improvements were required. In Hebrew בואו לעזור לכתוב sounds cumbersome. It is better to write בואו ועזרו לכתוב (=Come on and help write) or בואו נעזור לכתוב (which slightly changes the meaning into "Let's help writing"). The former phrasing is the one I introduced. As for Yiddish, the spelling left out some diacritics that are usually used in official writing (as opposed to private letters etc.). Also, there is a special character for the "two-vav" letter, and it is better to use it. Dror_K 05:14, 14 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Confusion?[edit]

There is a misleading request here: 'Help with translation'. Then it turns out there are three things to translate:

  1. The small text (related to the banner) on this page.
  2. The banner.
  3. The letter itself.

My actions/problems:

  1. I edited the text here, but it doesn't show on the banner.
  2. When I try to edit the banner it doesn't allow for it.
  3. There is no comprehensive way to show how to create the translated page on a yet unavailable language (but will figure it out later).
Update: it doesn't even allow for translation.

Can someone please clarify the two last problems (in bold)? Thank you. --Namik 14:20, 14 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Here's how the translation process works:
  • You click the banner link and you arrive at CentralNotice/March 2011 Update.
  • You look for your language's section or you add a new one for it if it doesn't exist.
  • You edit the existing translation or add the new one, and set the translation status to "ready" ({{banner translation status|qqq|ready}}). (If you forget to update the status, we will not be able to add your translation.)
  • Someone who has access to the banners will come and publish your translations, changing the status to "published".
  • If you want to translate the letter too, you visit the page on strategywiki (strategy:March 2011 Update) and copy the translation source into a subpage for your language (e.g. strategy:March 2011 Update/xx).
  • You translate the text of that page and then save it.
  • Post a message on strategy:Template talk:Other languages/March 2011 Update saying that you translated the page and that it should be added.
I hope this helps. Thank you for translating! Cbrown1023 talk 21:40, 14 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Please release![edit]

Tamil banner (code: ta) is ready now. Please release it as soon as you can. --Surya Prakash.S.A. 15:13, 14 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Done. In the future, all you need to do is update the status to "ready"; you don't need to leave a message here. Cbrown1023 talk 21:47, 14 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

OK friend... Thank you for the information. --Surya Prakash.S.A. 09:44, 21 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Should at least "Wikimedia" be left intact[edit]

Similarly to my previous Before_I_re-publish_these_notices entry above, before I re-publish some of the notices (in languages listed in the entry above and a few additional ones), I need to ask also should at least "Wikimedia" part be left intact (i.e. not translated)?

Because although in majority of languages it is, there are a few of them (languages that is, mostly Slavic ones) in which in one of the occurrence (or both!) Wikimedia becomes Wikimedija. Thanks in advance! --Wayfarer 02:56, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

So, what is the problem with the transliteration (NOT translation!) of Wikimedia into the respective alphabets? This has never been an issue so far, at least for Cyrillic and Bulgarian. For instance, the article on WMF in Bulgarian is bg:Фондация Уикимедия and the name is well familiar among Bulgarian readership. It's "я" (ja) and not "а" ("a") because the common words like "media" and "encyclopedia" are formed in this way, as well as many of the names of countries around the world. Same is with the very name "Bulgaria" which in Bulgarian is "България" (ja), not "Българиа". Moreover, seeing "Уикимедиа" everybody in Bulgaria would deem it mistaken, it's so unnatural! Please, return the ==bg== section back, everything with it is correct. Thanks. Spiritia 17:07, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I use Wikipedija, Wikimedija and so on for Upper Sorbian and Lower Sorbian because I think they are names of projects only, they are no proper names here. But in the expression Wikimedia Foundation Wikimedia is a part of a proper name, the name of an organization, and shouldn't be translated. I additionally use the corresponding generic term, here załožba the Sorbian word for foundation. Besides, it is useful for Sorbian declension, the expression Wikimedia Foundation alone I can't decline but the Sorbian word załožba I can. So the grammatical context will be clear. --Michawiki 20:27, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
