Accountability

I noticed this edit, apparently made by someone present at the ongoing Wikimedia Conference 2011. Does it mean that the Chapters committee no longer reports directly to the Wikimedia Board of Trustees? Whom is it accountable to currently? Regards, HaeB 14:52, 25 March 2011 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for spotting that. I am not sure who made the edit, but I'll ask around. Waiting to have an answer, I reverted the edit. notafish }<';> 16:19, 26 March 2011 (UTC)

Use me, please :D

Hi.

We at the Wikimedia Colombia project workgroup have a quick question: does every Wikimedia chapter has to use the original Wikimedia Logo, or can a different one be used?

Some time ago, User:Chlewey drew a logo proposal. It uses the country's map and its flag's colors, and we would like to use it (maybe after some retouching work, but keeping the main idea).

Thanks! --Racso ¿¿¿??? 22:00, 22 May 2011 (UTC)

Hi Racso,
The idea is indeed that all chapters use the same logo (except the text under it of course) to create a common identity. That way people can easily recognize that you are an official chapter. I'm afraid that if every chapter would start using its own logo, things would quickly become messy. Effeietsanders 22:09, 22 May 2011 (UTC)

Name

As we can see in the bylaws, every chapter has a name associated with Wikimedia, with maybe only two exceptions (Wiki Canada and Wiki UK Limited). For legal reasons, there is a suggestion for Wikimedia Brazil to not mention Wikimedia in its bylaws. Would it be possible to recognise a chapter named, let's say, "Free Knowledge Society", which met all other requirements (promoting "free content", etc)? I mean: if the name doesn't match with "Wikimedia Brasil", would it be a problem? CasteloBrancomsg 05:42, 1 July 2011 (UTC)

Hi,
Like you already noticed, there are some different policies for this from chapter to chapter. For the official name, you can basically choose whatever name you want - but it will be expected that once recognized, you will use "Wikimedia XX" (in this case, Wikimedia Brasil) as your trade name. Also Wiki UK Ltd is using Wikimedia UK as its trade name, and Wiki Canada is using Wikimedia Canada. There is no fundamental difference between "Wiki Canada" and "Brazillian Society for Free Knowledge" as long as you make sure you're not using an existing or confusing name of course. Ok, the trade name is fine, the problem is just the official name. We'll discuss this issue. Thank you, CasteloBrancomsg 13:11, 1 July 2011 (UTC)

Wikimedia Venezuela

Demasiado silencio, nadie dice nada. Nuestro grupo se desanima, se deprime. Esperamos una respuesta, saludos. Laura Fiorucci 04:12, 26 September 2011 (UTC)

(English translation in case some ChapCom member don't understand Spanish)
I made that question on IRC and will repeat here too:
I hope someone from ChapCom can see that... and understand. :) I'm part of Wikimedia Venezuela working group, and we want to know what is happening with our bylaws? There are any problems? Why they are not approved yet? How much more time we need to wait? Someone can give us a answer?. There are too much silence, no one say anything, and that discourages our group. We wait for an answer. Greetings.

Laura Fiorucci 14:02, 1 October 2011 (UTC)
Hello,

I am writing to ask you a question regarding the status of our still pending request of Wikimedia Venezuela to become a local Wikimedia Chapter. We have started gathering people and ideas since October 2010, organised a series of lectures for Wikipedia TEN. Our proposed bylaws have been reviewed by members of the ChapCom as early as May 2011. We were informed that in June-July 2011, our proposal was scheduled to be submitted to voting and, as of October 2, 2011, we are yet to receive a notification, either approval, rejection, suggestions...we have received only silence. What is going on? What has delayed the ChapCom to close the voting on our case? Working groups in other countries have submitted their proposals/requests to form a local WikimediaChapter more or less at the same time that we did, and they have been approved already. Why not Wikimedia Venezuela? What is wrong with us? If we were told what is wrong with us, we could work it out and fix whatever is needed...but with no input, we are left sitting in the waiting room for months...Could you please tell us what is delaying our approval? What do we have to do? Our people (37) is anxious and wondering what is going on. We were more people, but we feel dissapointed and discouraged, and this doesn't help us at all. Could you please give us an update?

Many, many thanks in advance from Venezuela. --Jewbask 01:48, 3 October 2011 (UTC)
