I have discussed this proposal with Sabine Cretella. She advised me on some points in the proposal. It is in the form of a letter to UNESCO. A handicap is that I have never written for such an organisation.

The amount of EUR 10.000 is everything and the kitchen sink for things that may be needed in programming. This is a worst case scenario where everything has to be payed for. In addition to what is mentioned in "the ultimate wiktionary" on Meta, one can think of changes in the user interface and software to make off-line use possible. GerardM 20:57, 13 Feb 2005 (UTC)

This proposal is not written for the grant in question... or is it?

Proposed goals of the proposal:

• Creating software for a many to many Wiktionary
• Recording pronunciation of words and writing down the meaning of words.
• Providing an equivalent for each word, or a description, in at least two other languages (from among English, Spanish, French, Russian or Chinese and a language known in the area of the language being worked on).

The three main priorities of IFAP vis-a-vis this grant:

• Promoting information literacy, through capacity building particularly for information professionals
• Strengthening awareness about the importance of preservation of information of all kinds
• Promoting a better understanding of the ethical, legal and societal implications of ICTs

"Strenghtening awareness about the importance of preservation of information" is very different from actual preservation; and is only the second of three key points of IFAP, the others of which are not addressed by this essay.

So... I agree that this is a great proposal and should be carried out. Perhaps we should find a grant that better fits this proposal? Sj 21:46, 13 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Also by connecting our effort to the creation op Open Office localisations, we do create tools that help the usage of ICT which is a stated aim of the program. By integrating the words in our dictionary, you can argue that we do help preserve information and open up this information to a wider public. GerardM 11:33, 14 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Well, I'm listing above the "primary" goals of this grant. You are satisfying some of the more general goals of IFAP as an organization, but their organization goals are remarkably vague. We must fill out the following windows, bearing in mind that the goals of this grant are:

1. Promoting information literacy, through capacity building particularly for information professionals
2. Strengthening awareness about the importance of preservation of information of all kinds
3. Promoting a better understanding of the ethical, legal and societal implications of ICTs

I believe that we can qualify for the first two if the grant is worded properly.
