Time and date inconsistencies[edit]

October 26, 2010 is a Tuesday, not a Wednesday. Are Sue's next office hours on the 26th or 27th? <jowen> Just as an FYI Sue's next office hours will be on Wednesday, October 27, 16:00-17:00 PT"[1] 71.198.176.22 23:58, 17 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

An office hour posted is: Thursday, November 18, 22:00 UTC. In 2011, 10pm UTC on November 18th will be a Friday. Fred Gandt 20:33, 17 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Ooh, whoops; forgot to fix that. headdesk. Okeyes (WMF) 05:17, 18 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Reorganize[edit]

This page is getting rather hard to follow. The archives are also all over the place. This used to be only Sue's office hours, but lately there's way too much stuff going on. So, I propose reorganizing this. Oliver, you have been handling the communications for the team, would you mind cleaning up a bit. For the archives, I'm thinking transcluding templates for the logs, and different color schemes, maybe archiving the old ones or splitting the pages off? Theo10011 (talk) 20:16, 17 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'm in charge of comms for the WMF? ;). Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 19:44, 18 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, WMF is Doing The Right Thing by operating transparently, but the result is pretty unusable. Example:
  • the useless page title "IRC office hours/Office hours 2015-02-19"
  • two IRC logs on one day end up in on this one wiki page, etc.
a partial fix would be for the templates to title the page "IRC office hours/{{{topic}}} YYYY-MM-DD" (e.g. IRC office hours/VisualEditor 2015-02-19), then the page title reveals what it's for and a PrefixIndex would show a subset. Theo10011, what do you mean "transcluding templates for the logs", we don't want to show logs inline. -- SPage (WMF) (talk) 22:26, 6 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

MeetBot for #wikimedia-office[edit]

For you information: Bug 46377 - MeetBot for #wikimedia-office. Please weigh in there.--Qgil (talk) 15:36, 12 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Kill "Recent office hours" section in favor of "Office hour logs"?[edit]

Can we please kill "Recent office hours" because "Office hour logs" exists and just duplicates the list, plus add a requirement to paste IRC logs? --AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 11:37, 30 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed, this is confusing duplication. Quiddity (talk) 17:01, 30 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, get rid of it. This was added relatively recently by Sharihareswara (WMF). Killiondude (talk) 05:53, 1 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

lightly-formatted HTML and colored names[edit]

The link to "lightly-formatted HTML" is 404 (it's at the top of IRC office hours#Office hour logs), and I can't see anything further up the directory tree that would contain it. Is this a historic and no-longer working aspect? What did it contain or do that was useful? Thanks. Quiddity (talk) 22:56, 13 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I asked Petrb on IRC and he said that there are no html logs anymore. This tool can be used instead. --Glaisher [talk] 17:26, 14 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Red links to existing pages[edit]

Hi, the VE office hour log is correctly online and linked in the page, but the link shows up as red :/ --Elitre (WMF) (talk) 10:21, 21 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Purging the cache has fixed it. --Glaisher (talk) 12:16, 21 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

meetbot?[edit]

This page doesn't mention it, while using it is documented at IRC office hours/Guidelines. Is it really needed? The chan is logged anyway. What's the value of using it? Thanks. --Elitre (WMF) (talk) 18:24, 2 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Meetbot generates a meeting summary (in HTML and wikitext), but only if someone in the meeting issues "commands" like #idea eat more vegetables, #action JDoe will buy dip for broccoli. In that case it is very valuable, e.g.
Meetbot also creates a colored log of the meeting from #startmeeting to #endmeeting, in this example see the _full logs_ link to
So if you're having a structured meeting and you know how to work it, meetbot is awesome. -- SPage (WMF) (talk) 21:28, 6 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Upcoming office hours should be table rows, plus a single date field[edit]

{{Upcoming office hour}} outputs a one-row table, so we have dozens of separate tables with identical column headers that can't be sorted. Already IRC office hours#2015 is in random date order and it's mindless busywork to sort them.

If someone changed the template to output a single table row, like e.g. {{#invoke:Deployment schedule|row|...} in wikitech:Deployments and many other templates, then the page would have multiple rows in fewer tables, and you could click to sort each one by Date, With, or Topic.

While I'm here, there's no point in having to fill out three separate parameters date=01|month=10|year=2015 for the ISO8601 date=2015-10-01. http://xkcd.com/1179/ FTMFW! :-)

I realize "Talk is cheap, implementation costs" -- SPage (WMF) (talk) 20:44, 28 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

No, they probably shouldn't. My impression is that the current setting was chosen because announcing an event and then marking it done is a very easy copy/paste operation that everyone could perform even if they were not so much into wikitext, which could have been the case for some WMF staff back in the days, for example. However, if we used a simple table, then we could use VisualEditor to edit it, but then again, people would have to enable it manually before. Generally speaking, do we really need so much content on the page? Why can't it only cover present year's events, while everything else gets archived? --Elitre (WMF) (talk) 09:41, 29 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

When I want to donwload iCal, there is an error[edit]

When I clicked on the download in iCal provided in the page, the page links to a page that shows "Fatal error: Call-time pass-by-reference has been removed in /home/tantek/domains/h2vx.com/public_html/ics/get-cal.php on line 138". Does anyone knows how to fix it? Thank you. --Liang(WMTW) (talk) 16:01, 3 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Start using Phab events for these?[edit]

We've been using Phab events for mw:Architecture meetings for a while, and it's been nice. It doesn't yet replace the iCal support that this page has, but there's enough automation that it's worthwhile for repeated meetings. We have a a new #IRC-Meetings tag which has all Phabricator events that have an anticipated IRC component (e.g. office hours on #wikimedia-office). A couple of queries:

As of this writing, only #ArchCom-RFC meetings are in there, but hopefully that will expand as more people learn about this. WMF Developer Relations has been thinking about this for a while, and has plans for this discussed at Phab:T1035 -- RobLa-WMF (talk) 23:19, 13 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The community is on wikis. Phabricator is an off wiki environment whose role, intentional or otherwise is to keep the community away from the developers. Using Phabricator instead of a wiki page for these IRC events goes completely against the concept of these events as a way for the WMF to engage with the community. WereSpielChequers (talk) 00:04, 14 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with WereSpielChequers. Please don't. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 01:03, 14 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe a bot could update this page from the Phabricator events, or vice versa. Removing the on-wiki listing is not a workable option, per above. --Yair rand (talk) 10:15, 14 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Would it be okay for me to just manually copy over stuff on the Architecture RFC meetings from Phabricator to this page? (I'm not completely sure if they count as "Office hours"...) --Yair rand (talk) 03:40, 24 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Completed office hours[edit]

Hello, I wanted to let everybody know that I would appreciate it if those who remove office hours from Upcoming office hours also make sure it gets moved to Office hours logs. I am feeling a bit agitated because somebody who removed a bunch of office hours from the Upcoming Office hours section failed to more it to the Office hours logs. Therefore, I had to do a lot of extra work to get hours in the Office hours logs. Again, please make sure that when you remove an office hours from the Upcoming Office hours, that you put it in the Office Hours logs. Thank you. 2602:306:3357:BA0:75F6:A635:E825:F928 01:17, 12 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

webcal kaputt[edit]

@Lydia Pintscher (WMDE): When I try to add webcal://h2vx.com/ics/https%3A//meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/IRC_office_hours to my Google Calender I get "Sie haben keinen Zugriff auf den Kalender von IRC office hours - Meta."--185.137.18.203 13:52, 9 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

calendar[edit]

Are IRC office hours still held?

I see no events on the calendar.

Benjamin (talk) 10:55, 16 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Benjaminikuta: It looks like Addshore is hosting a mw:Technical Advice IRC Meeting. It's listed on the Tech News bulletin. I'll add it to the recurring list of office hours. Killiondude (talk) 07:24, 22 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Edit request 2021-10-10[edit]

Please edit this page to make it compatible with Special:Translate. --忒有钱 (talk) 15:26, 10 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Mdennis (WMF): is this something that the WMF team would like to do? Something that you would like the community to do on your behalf? Declining the EP request as it is not that sort of request.  — billinghurst sDrewth 01:22, 11 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

raw text of logs: link no longer works[edit]

the Section "Office hour logs" contains link said to link to the raw text of the meeting as recorded by a bot ("IRC bot automatically stores "raw" logs of the wikimedia-office channel"). I tried to look up today's logs, but the link produces a "Not found" error. Should the link be corrected or are there no raw logs? Thank you. --Qcomp (talk) 20:08, 14 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Should we rename this page?[edit]

The vast majority of the office hours are held over video these days. Probably time to rename this page to something more generic? Joe Sutherland (Wikimedia Foundation) (talk) 00:00, 11 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Now that the IRC channel has been shutdown, renaming and cleaning up the page to be more in line with current meeting venues seems like a really good idea. -- BDavis (WMF) (talk) 17:39, 14 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Objections to shutting down the #wikimedia-office libera.chat IRC channel?[edit]

I became the "founder" of #wikimedia-officeconnect when the libera.chat migration happened in 2021. Looking at the channel's chat logs today I realized that the WMF had not made use of this channel since the migration. 2021-04-17 seems to be the last meeting listed that explicitly says it used IRC as a feedback channel during a documented meeting. Video platform integrated chat is more commonly used today with most meetings happening via Zoom+YouTube or similar as @JSutherland (WMF) noted in #Should_we_rename_this_page?

I think that shutting down the IRC channel and making it redirect to #wikimediaconnect would accomplish two goals:

  • one fewer IRC channel for ops to monitor for abuse
  • remove a source of confusion for folks who read "wikimedia-office" and think it is a venue to discuss their personal concerns with the Wikimedia Foundation

Does anyone have a logical argument why we should keep the channel open as a separate venue? A proper shutdown will leave behind a redirect so that folks who may stumble into old links or old habits afterwards. -- BDavis (WMF) (talk) 21:26, 23 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I am going to take the lack of responses after two weeks here as a sign that folks don't have a strong opinion and/or nobody is watching this page. @Quiddity (WMF) has done some asking around within the WMF Communications teams and so far found no objections. -- BDavis (WMF) (talk) 15:07, 10 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Close it. (RIP) Legoktm (talk) 06:08, 14 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I have closed the #wikimedia-office channel. Here is roughly what was done to achieve that:
/mode #wikimedia-office +I $a:bd808
/mode #wikimedia-office +I $a:wmopbot
/mode #wikimedia-office +I $a:litharge
/mode #wikimedia-office +I $a:James_F
/mode #wikimedia-office +I $a:quiddity
/mode #wikimedia-office +I $a:wm-bot
/cs op #wikimedia-office
/topic #wikimedia-office Obsolete Wikimedia Foundation public meetings channel | See #wikimedia instead
/cs set #wikimedia-office guard on
/cs set #wikimedia-office mlock +tnsmif #wikimedia
/cs set #wikimedia-office topiclock on
/cs set #wikimedia-office private on
/cs clear #wikimedia-office users This channel has moved, please see #wikimedia instead
Thanks to @Stwalkerster for their assistance with wmopbot and the +F flag that was briefly needed in #wikimediaconnect to set the mode. -- BDavis (WMF) (talk) 17:21, 14 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Litharge rejoined the channel following a service restart. It got in because of the +I I had granted when shutting things down. I have now emptied the invite list for the channel. If there is a need for myself or one of the other founders to get back in for some reason, /cs invite #wikimedia-office should do the trick. -- BDavis (WMF) (talk) 15:42, 25 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
