Allow new Wikipedias in ancient languages?

There is a current discussion about the posibility of continuing wikipedias in ancient languages, in the list of wikimedia titled Allow new wikis in extinct languages?. if you want to susbcribe to the list enter here. We need know your opinion for taking a decission.

Incorrect Russian on Wiktionary.org

The multilingual Wiktionary protal contains incorrect inscription in Russian (must be Свободный словарь instead of *Свободную словарь). Probably the same problem with Polish (must be Wielojęzyczny słownik or, perhaps Wolny słownik, but in that case you'd rather consult some Polish native speakers). 81.25.53.78 23:33, 8 September 2007 (UTC) (Al Silonov, ru.wiktionary)

Damage to Latgalian Wikipedia

Hello, It seems that Cbrown1023 has deleted the main and the most important page of Latgalian test Wikipedia (http://incubator.wikimedia.org/wiki/Test-wp/bat-ltg). I am not that advanced in Wikipedia's structure to understand how it was possible to make such considerable damage to Latgalian Wikipedia's community without even having the possibility to recover the page from history.

Please help undoing the damage ASAP. Thanks a lot! Stiernīts 19:06, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

New projects

I am troubled to see so many projects being opposed by people. I oppose them as well but what i am trying to say is so many projects are being set up when there are already things like the project or wiki in question. What i sa is get admins to check over the proposals to make sure there is nothing like it anywhere else on the wiki's and put a warning to users with proposals to do their research first.Wiki.user 07:33, 25 June 2007 (UTC)

Wikitube idea

I've had an idea of combining the functionality of a wiki with a video based application of Youtube. Basically Wikitube would work the same way as a wiki works, but instead of text, users would be able to edit videos and multimedia content. It would require an application that would make it very easy to cut, paste, rearrange and connect videos or parts of videos to make up an altered version. A very simple, basic and easy to use online video editor that visitors would be able to use to rearrange and reshape to make a better presentation of the information available of those videos. A record would be available so that visitors would be able to go back and sift through the history in case someone made a mistake. It would probably have a database and an entry type system sort of like the one already in use by Wikipedia. It would also be possible to add text and hight quality images in a not conspicuous place, like under the video screen, that users would be able to access for more information. The additional content could even be another video itself, so that users could shift to that video if they felt like taking the video in another direction. Basically it's a very rich multimedia content that anyone could edit with a bit of practice and would include all types of multimedia like videos, pictures, and sound.

For example, visitors would be able to watch a video and see something on the screen like an iPod that would flicker when a mouse is pointed at it that would take the viewer to a new video or page about that item. Users would also be able to connect parts of videos together if they feel like a smooth transition could be made from one video to another. Basically it would be like watching television that would never end because the videos would always lead to somewhere else, but the user would be able influence the overall direction where the video goes.

In another example, the software would analyze the users mouse movement patterns to determine the users interest and preferences and accordingly decide which videos to play inserting articles and sounds at sounds at particular times to enrich the experience. In a later version the user would also be able to provide input or feedback through the keyboard and possibly microphone / camera. --Nadyes 14:56, 21 June 2007

Here is an additional idea that could be sinple ormore enmeshed. give youtube references for visuals at article end

Correcting a language names on the interwiki links

The language name for the Azerbaijani name in interwiki links is wrong. That is for a [[az:ARTICLE-NAME]] in the side bar it shows Azərbaycan which translate to Azerbaijan, name of the country or region. It should read Azərbaycan Dili. I would like to correct this, appreciate if anyone can let me know where or how this can be done. --Mehrdad 15:34, 4 February 2007 (UTC)

number of articles

on www.wikipedia.org is written that in the italian wikipedia there are 247000 articles, but really there are 256000 articles. Could you correct the number?

Funding for Wikipedia

I was looking into the problem that wikipedia has with funding. I have a suggestion/idea. I know that wikipedia does not want to place ads on their website. This is a good decision. However, wikipedia can have articles about the product a company is selling. An article for a certain laptop by Sony. Sony can pay to wikipedia just to put the article there. However, to keep wikipedia unbiased, the article will contain the factual information rather than the one used in advertisements. So, it is not exactly and ad, it is unbiased and it generates some funds.

Don't really think Sony would pay for that, but good thought anyways. Alex43223 Talk | Contribs | E-mail | C 03:33, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

What's that? sub category

I don't like this idea at all - it would undermine Wikipedia's credibility, and we've had more than enough of that lately.--Runcorn 19:34, 16 March 2007 (UTC)

What's the difference ?

What's the difference between "Wikipedia" and "Wikimedia"? It all looks the same to me.

Croatian (Hrvatski) Wiktionary

Seems like nobody really reads these pages, and I would be better off contacting some admin directly, though I know not who to contact. But the Croatian (Hrvatski) Wiktionary has surpassed 1,000 articles though is still featured under the 100+ heading on Wiktionary's portal page ( http://www.wiktionary.org/ ). Somebody please correct this, or notify the required person(s) so that they can correct it. —60.241.71.229 15:28, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

Namespaces and subpage function

Hi, I'm fairly certain this is not the right pace to ask this, but couldn't find a better one. Could anyone tell me how I can translate the Namespaces for a wiki in a new language if I have sysop rights for that wiki (example: changing User to Utilisateur for the French wiki)? I would also like to know if I can create new namespaces and change their subpage properties? Thanks in advance, --azimski 22:14, 5 July 2007 (UTC)

You can't translate namespaces from the web UI, but developers can do that for you - file a bug at http://bugzilla.wikimedia.org. Developers can also create new namespaces and enable/disable subpages on them. --.anaconda 01:53, 7 July 2007 (UTC)

Adding sister projects

There are some sister projects that I find should obviously be listed. Wikipedia, Wikiquote, Wiktionary, Wikibooks, Wikisource, Commons, Wikispecies, Wikinews. And then there are a few that don't get a link on Wikipedia, but I think should be listed here: MediaWiki, Bugzilla, Incubator, Test.wikipedia and Wikimania. Any past discussion on why these aren't on the main page? --Steinninn 15:35, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

In my opinion, the main page is a bit of a mess and needs work. I would certainly agree to adding the above projects, Majorly (talk) 15:40, 30 August 2007 (UTC)
I have updated an already existing template: {{Sisterprojects}} --Steinninn 03:39, 31 August 2007 (UTC)

Where can I report?

Admins disruptive behavior? they don't let me edit on there site. I add a link admins remove it, when the link is informative with no reason except with the rollback script [1] I remove POV links they revert me with no reason, [2] not to mention the article translates to 'Khojaly Genocide' unlike every other interwiki that goes to massacre obviously POV issues are occuring. --Yegoyan 02:46, 4 September 2007 (UTC)

2,000,000th article on the English Wikipedia

The 2,000,000th article on the English Wikipedia (believed to be El Hormiguero, although this fact is under dispute) was created on September 7, and I think that this is worth mentioning in the news. Oh, and does anyone know when the press release will be available? --169.229.100.89 20:10, 11 September 2007 (UTC)

what can i do?

Hi, I am administrator of the gilish language wikipedia. I want to translate the main menu, what can I do?--AminSanaei 06:59, 8 October 2007 (UTC)

Hi, You can translate the menu in w:glk:MediaWiki:Sidebar and/or the corresponding pages w:glk:MediaWiki:Mainpage, w:glk:MediaWiki:Portal, w:glk:MediaWiki:Currentevents, and so on. But, please, if You want to translate the interface come over to Betawiki and ask us for translator-status, thanks :) --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 09:01, 8 October 2007 (UTC)
ok, thank you very much!. I have other question; Gilish language Wikipedia is "ltr" and I want to change this to "rtl", what can I do? --AminSanaei 12:56, 8 October 2007 (UTC)
I think that You can request that at bugzilla:. Please have a look at the recent changes of Your project (there are a lot of spam-pages (all those with ...w/w/w/index.php)) and You might also want to have a look at this page, thanks. best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 20:12, 8 October 2007 (UTC)
ok, i try to improve gilish wikipedia but what can i do for change website direction from LTR to RTL --AminSanaei 07:37, 9 October 2007 (UTC)
As I said, I think that should go to bugzilla: (of course only if there is a consensus in Your community) or You could ask at #wikimedia-tech-IRC-channel, best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 11:24, 9 October 2007 (UTC)

When I go to "bugzilla:" this want to me that inter the number of bug!, I think that for changing direction a webpage, I need to source of page to change source codes; for example when I want to translate the main menu I change the source of words. An administrator doesn't have an "administrator control panel" for these changes?--AminSanaei 10:16, 13 October 2007 (UTC)

Nope, that's why You need a server-admin/developer who use to dwell on bugzilla, but You have to open an new bug there (register first in order to be able to do so, then go to enter bug->Wikimedia), best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 10:39, 13 October 2007 (UTC)

The inclusion of the sister projects

I think that a list of all the other sister projects should be placed on the Main page, much like on Wikipedia. Comments? --Anonymous DissidentTalk 08:47, 19 October 2007 (UTC)

Agree. It is to be found on all the projects at the bottom of their Main Pages, and all of them include a link to Meta. Dovi 18:37, 24 October 2007 (UTC)

Youtube within the Wiki

Is there a way to imbed videos from youtube into the wiki, so that people can watch video straight from the site.

Youtube videos normally break external links policy whether embedded or not, because most of them are copyrighted material. Sam Blacketer 19:45, 15 November 2007 (UTC)
It's technically possible using the VideoFlash extension, but that won't be enabled on Wikimedia wikis, mostly due to the copyright problems Sam Blacketer mentions. —{admin} Pathoschild 19:49:34, 15 November 2007 (UTC)

All main page lingual variants locked?

Should this be done? The en version is locked, and it isnt a very good introduction to meta if other language mps are vandalised and a newcomer sees their native language main page wrecked. --Anonymous DissidentTalk 03:39, 25 November 2007 (UTC)

I don't think so, we have a lot of anti-vandalism fronts and not everyone is a meta admin. ;-) It would be harder to get them translated and updated. Cbrown1023 talk 04:05, 25 November 2007 (UTC)
If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I would rather accept a small risk of vandalisms and be able to repair them than be barred from touching it. Hillgentleman 05:11, 25 November 2007 (UTC)
Ok then, thanks all for your feedback. --Anonymous DissidentTalk 05:21, 25 November 2007 (UTC)
