Newsletter Copyedit [edit]
I would like to complete my copyedit of the Foundation Newsletter. For this, I need an acccount. Therefore, I am requesting an account for the Foundation website.RoseParks 03:29, 22 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- (notes that this would be most helpful) +sj+ 20:32, 22 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- Rose has been around since day one of Wikipedia and was a very important and trusted person in Nupedia. She should be granted access ASAP. --Daniel Mayer 21:27, 22 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- The newsletter should not have been moved to the Foundation wiki until it is in its final publishable form. All corrections should be happening on meta until it's finished. The version on the foundation site will not an editable one. Angela 21:54, 22 Sep 2004 (UTC)
I had no part in this newsletter being moved before the copyedit was finished. If you, Angela, prefer to leave the Newsletter with mistakes in it, so be it. I guess, if that is your decision, I had better rethink whether I want my name listed as Chief Proofreader. RoseParks 03:54, 23 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- I am not saying I want it to be left with errors. I'm saying you can edit the one that is on meta. It should never have been moved but since people seem to be linking to it, I can't very well delete the one on the Foundation site now. Angela
-
- Hum, technically, it seems to me that once the NL is moved, one of the two versions should be protected for it not to be editable. Sj, what is the current policy on that ? We are certainly doing some copyedit on the french one right now. I understand Angela position here, but I think there is something unclear. In all cases, Rose has been there for very long and her involvement in nupedia on top show that she is really fine. Hence I created her an account. Rose, you should receive a mail. If not, please bip me. Anthere (a bit confused about what is best to do, but not willing to hurt anyone here :-))

-
- Ok, I protected the one on the foundation wiki since most people can't edit that anyway. Angela 07:17, 23 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Wikimedia Hosting in the USA [edit]
Please create a User Account for me, if necessary.
I am considering hosting a public Wiki, as my server is pretty responsive. I am considering the possibility of providing Wikimedia Hosting and development for those interested in Corporate Wiki's with an approval system.
Requested Username:weide e-mail adress:wikipediaromana(a)888WebGuru.com reason: I want to manage a User's Group in the USA.
Ken Weide wikipediaromana(a)888WebGuru.com US/Canada Toll Free: 1-888-932-4878 011-01-972-660-4596
- This can be discussed on Meta, or on the mailing lists. The Foundation wiki is not for discussion. Angela 06:59, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)
How are people supposed to find this? [edit]
There should be links from appropriate places on the Foundation wiki, such as the login page, the page that appears if you try to edit when not logged in, and the membership page. Brianjd 02:55, 2005 Feb 24 (UTC)
- The feedback page is linked from the foundation wiki, and that page links here. The board's email address is also on every edit page, so people could use that instead. Angela
- I think there are 2 things users are likely to look at, and this page is not one of them:
- Email - either from the edit page, or from the "contact us" page.
- The membership page.
- I don't think they will go to the "main page" discussion page. Brianjd | Why restrict HTML? | 06:23, 2005 Mar 13 (UTC)
- They could use email, which might not be a problem, except that we have this page as well, and why would we want users using two methods to contact the Board about this issue? Brianjd | Why restrict HTML? | 06:24, 2005 Mar 13 (UTC)
- I think there are 2 things users are likely to look at, and this page is not one of them:

- This page is now linked from Wikimedia:MediaWiki:Loginprompt so users will see it if they try to log in. Angela

Let's remove some requests! [edit]
Why are the requests "piling up"? First, we need to request an account on a page we can't find, then it takes a long time for our requests to be looked at! Brianjd | Why restrict HTML? | 02:52, 2005 Mar 15 (UTC)
I think emails should be sent to those whose requests were rejected and the requests moved to the archive page rather than an archive section. Brianjd | Why restrict HTML? | 08:06, 2005 Mar 20 (UTC)
- I've no objection to old requests being removed. Angela 07:04, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Traduzione [edit]
Feddar <mailto:wiki@biazzi.org> --82.112.213.66 15:29, 1 Jul 2005 (UTC)
- Grazie per la segnalazione, ho provveduto alla correzione. --M/ 20:38, 31 August 2005 (UTC)
Talk Pages [edit]
I was quite surprised to discover I couldn't comment on a Talk page without creating an account, and I can't create an account without being an admin on one of the foundation's sites (which I'm not). Wouldn't it be better to allow Talk page comments by any wikipedia registered user even if the content pages are locked?
On a seperate but kind of related note, I'm perplexed as to why the foundation hasn't moved to single accounts for the whole network. I'm running about 10 wikis on my local machine with a single installation, single configuration file and a shared users table, and it's working great! --Kingboyk 16:40, 18 December 2005 (UTC)
- You're running 10 wikis, we're running a few hundred, each with thousands of editors. It would leave the projects down for at least a day, in my estimation. -- user:zanimum
blacklist problem [edit]
El C linked to tinyurl, (with the page of dgjja he), I couldn't save the page as it triggered the spam blacklist, so I removed it. I hope this is appropriate. Elle vécut heureuse à jamais (Be eudaimonic!) 23:28, 2 March 2006 (UTC)
Page move [edit]
I've moved "Wikimedia site feedback/request for an account" (this page) to "Request for an account on the Foundation wiki", which is more accurate and doesn't contain the ambiguous subpage syntax. If there is opposition to this, I will move it back. Not expecting any opposition, doing it now preempts the extra page moves for the archives I'm standardising. // [admin] Pathoschild (talk/map) 22:25, 11 June 2006 (UTC)
Archiving [edit]
Just thought: is there a problem that people who are not in charge of creating accounts archive past requests either accepted, rejected or left without reply to question(s), specially if there is written criteria for archiving? --Aphaia 09:45, 24 October 2006 (UTC)
- since there is no objection, I am going to just remove fulfilled requests (you may find them in history). If you prefer to keep them, you may revert my edit and create an archive ;) --Aphaia 21:44, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
Email confirmation [edit]
Aparantly, if someone requests an account on the foundation wiki, they have to provide an email adress and therfroe disclose it to the public, I would therefore recommend that if possible, someone requesting an account at meta not specify their primary email adress, and then change it to that once they have logged in. Myrt|comments 14:44, 16 December 2006 (UTC)
- Thank you for your recommendation, but their mail address is need at the moment we create them new accounts and send them passwords. I don't want to add more steps and increase my workload. --Aphaia 16:42, 13 April 2007 (UTC)
- What Myrt is suggesting will still work, the user (not you) would perform the change in their preferences. It shouldn't increase your workload. Cbrown1023 talk 15:25, 14 April 2007 (UTC)
Aeonimitz [edit]
- User
- Aeonimitz is an active sysop in Malay Wikipedia.
- aeonimitz at hotmail.com
- Reason
- to translate pages to Malay.
To make way for new translation wikimedia project in Malay. Aeon 17:50, 11 June 2007 (UTC)
P/S: I put my request here because the content page itself is locked so i cannot edit.
- Hi, I would like you to know you can help translation without account. In other words, we would like all translators principally to work here on meta, not on the website directly. See Translation requests for further information. Thanks. --Aphaia 17:57, 11 June 2007 (UTC)
- This request is rejected. As of yet, Aeonimitz is not a sysop on Malay Wikipedia (ms:Special:Listusers/sysop). He is either not active on meta. --Aphaia 11:00, 28 July 2007 (UTC)
Gp75motorsports [edit]
Hi. I'm Gp75motorsports. I've got an account on 'Pedia and Commons. I want an account here because I think that I could be an active contributor to all Wikimedia projects. --24.254.198.112 21:08, 15 December 2007 (UTC)
- Requests should be made on the main page, not here, though you're not likely to get an account if you don't provide a stronger argument for why you need one. EVula // talk // ☯ // 21:57, 15 December 2007 (UTC)
Email confirmation [edit]
I've requested that a revision be removed per the Email confirmation section above. I've listed another email in place, and Cary's comment is attributed to him (the deleted revision removes the historical attribution). One can not be to secure. Regards, NonvocalScream 02:00, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
History note [edit]
I've deleted 2 revisions (hiding a personal info per user req): the info one and the bastique' intermediate one which isn't shown in the page history:

Thanks--Nick1915 - all you want 02:01, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
Shortcut [edit]
I think it would be great this page has a shortcut. But no good name falls upon me. WMFWIKI or WMF may be very confusable with Wikimedia site feedback or Wikimedia Foundation. RFWMFWIKIACCOUNT, painful long etc. But I love this idea itself.
Thought?--Aphaia 23:36, 21 April 2008 (UTC)
- ...and RFAAOTFW seems a little hard to remember too.... how about WMFACCOUNT? Cbrown1023 talk 23:52, 21 April 2008 (UTC)
Admins only? [edit]
Why do you have to be an administrator to be able to get an account for the Foundation wiki? --Marshall Williams2 19:22, 4 June 2009 (UTC)
- Hello,
- I think this is because you need to show that you are trusted on Wikimedia. The Foundation site isn't a normal wiki where you can just go and edit.
- Btw, just being a admin doesn't give you a Foundation account. Huib talk 19:31, 4 June 2009 (UTC)
- It is a pitty there is such a condition here. I would be interested for a log-in too. Is there a way I can show I am familiar with the policies of at least one Wikimedia project???--Kozuch 18:38, 26 October 2009 (UTC)
- One solution would be to open talk pages only.--Kozuch 19:56, 22 November 2009 (UTC)
- Why would we open the talkpages there, its not a normal wiki with discussions :) Huib talk 19:59, 22 November 2009 (UTC)
- I thought the foundation might use some more targeted feedback than blog comments only? Think about it please! --Kozuch 16:00, 24 November 2009 (UTC)
- Dead convo, but for anyone reading it now ... the place for the "targeted feedback" is here on Meta at Foundation wiki feedback. – Philosopher Let us reason together. 13:23, 27 December 2012 (UTC)

Question [edit]
Would being an administrator on the test wiki count? It's really easy to get it there and I already have it. I think I know policies at the English Wikipedia fairly well (as well at least as some of the admins) the reason I'm not an admin is I'm not fond of article work and my account is not very old. Mr. R00t Talk 01:58, 25 September 2010 (UTC)
- As nearly anyone can get an admin flag there for asking, I suspect not. Don't feel bad, I don't have a WMFwiki account either, though there's not a whole lot of reason for most people to need one. Kylu 03:06, 25 September 2010 (UTC)

About the e-mail address [edit]
I see everyone who requests for an account has an e-mail address like XXXX@wikimedia.org. How this kind of e-mail address is created.--Pratyya Ghosh (talk) 13:33, 22 January 2013 (UTC)
- Hi there! You'll actually notice that the domains of the email addresses are @wikimedia.org.uk and @wikimedia.ch. This means that that these users are from Wikimedia Chapters around the world, and so have a relevant email address from that Chapter. You're unlikely to see someone with just a @wikimedia.org email address as these are Foundation staff/contractors who usually request an account through an alternative method. Thehelpfulone 17:04, 22 January 2013 (UTC)
- Yup. Basically, to get an @wikimedia.org account, you have to be employed (or have some similarly official position) with them. Us "normal" editors don't get them. – Philosopher Let us reason together. 13:40, 24 January 2013 (UTC)
