Talk:Wikimedia user group creation guide

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Wondering why it's not editable. Tony (talk) 07:33, 19 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for noticing the error in the first sentence. I see no technical reason why the page would not be editable – so if you see other possible fixes, go ahead! Best, --Bence (talk) 12:43, 19 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Naming[edit]

Why "MediaWiki Group X" but not "Wikimedia Group X"? Presumably a MediaWiki group is more vague. It could either refer to a bunch of devs who code MediaWiki and extensions, or a group of peple promoting the use of MediaWiki, not only used by Wikimedia (e.g., Wikia). Introduction - third section[edit]

"As user groups are a new type of entity, the road you will take might differ
from the recommendations here: we would love to hear on the talk page about
your experiences and advice to those who come after you!"

Isn't here a link missing?

Or should it better written as?

  • ... we would love to hear on this creation guides' talk page about ...

Comments[edit]

I've been working through it; some of my changes are more than the usual non-substantive edits, so please check.

I didn't understand the grammar of the suggestions for naming a user group. ... and I'm a native English-speaker. Heaven help others. I wonder whether you could actually fill in some example names—even made-up ones. University of the Pacific Wikimedia User Group; Central Asian Archeologists User Group, etc.

And maybe cut the bits after the colon at this stage? Some readers will think that that might be part of the actual name, whereas really I think you intend it to be some kind of byline on site pages. "Club" seems inappropriate, too. I worry that your explanation underneath will further confuse matters ("the above names, including the tagline were designed with the aim to protect the members of the user group from misdirected lawsuits and to ensure that the Wikimedia trademarks are used in a non-confusing, accurate manner.").

  • Wikimedia Community User Group _____ : An independent club of Wikimedia volunteers
  • Wikimedians of _____ User Group : an independent group of volunteer Wikimedians
  • Wikipedians of _____ User Group : an independent group of volunteer Wikimedians
  • MediaWiki Group _____ : an independent group of volunteer Wikimedians
  • Wikipedia Editors for _____ : an independent group of volunteer Wikimedians
  • Any name that does not involve a Wikimedia trademark, such as "Wiki User Group _____" or "Esperanto kaj Libera Scio"

I'm confused; readers will be too. Legal stuff would be better discussed directly between AffCom and user-group candidates, I think. Tony (talk) 10:48, 26 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
