Introductory note to Anthere[edit]
Florence : je n’ai pas oublié notre rendez vous de Juillet ..Peux tu expliquer dans un article ..comment nous avons envisagé de collaborer entre Planètécologie et Wikipedia , ce que cela pourrait apporter aux uns et aux autres ..et surtout , ce que votre manière de travailler apporte d’intelligence collective qui pourrait se mettre au service du développement durable ?
Explanation from Anthere[edit]
In May 2004, during the presentation of WP for DocForum, I had the opportunity to meet Bruno Oudet, who initiated in France la “fête de l’Internet” and is currently the french delegate to the SMSI. Bruno put me in contact with Michel Giran, the founder of www.planetecologie.org.
Michel is organising a meeting, TIC21, which will take place in February 2005 in the north of France (http://www.tic21.com). He invited Wikipedia to participate to it.
To go along with the meeting, a newsletter was initiated, and Michel just asked me to contribute to the next one. The previous newsletter may be found here : http://www.tic21.com/intro.php?Page=lettreTIC21.htm

Unfortunately, this is not simple French :-) so I do not know how effective a google translation would be.
In the next newsletter, Michel would like more specifically for us to explain how his site and Wikipedia could interact (this was the subject of a meeting which occured in July, but this exchange is still under development), and explain how our collective work could be useful for sustainable development.
Given the organisations involved in this meeting, I feel strongly that Wikipedia should be part of this and I will try to organise this as best I can.
A good part of the meeting is related to setting into place an effective thesaurus, which will include the GEMET, so as to create a shared source for world-wide information.
Given the recent discussions on GEMET and the creation of Wikispecies, I would like this to be the focus of our newsletter participation (the other potentially interesting topic would be democratic participation...). I’d like to discuss this with those interested.
On GEMET and Wikispecies[edit]

I found what you asked in the Species project, I have been off-line a bit and am still busy fixing all kinds of stuff with regard to the nl:wiktionary.
GEMET, stands for GEneral Multilingual Environmental Thesaurus. Its data and structure can be used by the Wikimedia organisation.
History so far
- It had been offered by GEMET to be converted to the Wiktionary format. I have not looked who it was adressed to and I have not found it.
- I posted a message that I have a glossary of botanical terms and that I wanted to upload it.
- I got a mail from Stefan Jensen, the project manager of GEMET, informing me that they want to have us host the GEMET data. As I am intrested in WIKISPECIES and WIKTIONARY, I see an opportunity to do one better and have the GEMET data as a pilot-project for Wiktionary and as actual content for Wikispecies. However, this will need some database work.
- I write some stuff on META about GEMET, about the need for Wiktionary to share data in a XML format, about the benefits for Wiktionary to be contained within a relational database.
- On META, we have posted several ideas about a possible datamodel for Wiktionary
- In the meantime I get the SQL definitions for the GEMET data from GEMET with permission to use it within Wikimedia.
- I propose to install this as is in Wikispecies.
- Meanwhile WikiData appears; this is one project that can benefit the Wikispecies and the Wiktionary projects.
- I try to help in this project and by doing so stimulate Wikispecies and Wiktionary.
Status
- WikiData is not ready to do something for both projects
- nl:Wiktionary has had a BIG conversion; first character capitalisation has been turned off and I have been working on the consequences for the last two weeks. The problem is big as nl:Wiktionary is a 5100 article project.
- Wikispecies needs to get help from developers.
- At this moment I have taken a two day break from the conversion, one day I was off line, today I have been busy with making the nl:wiktionary friendier. - I worked on sound for Wikimedia; Oscar has promissed to record pronounciations in Dutch, he is a professiona re sound - I have added categories to the templates that indicate that a word is in a particular language - I have been working on indicating that a word is particular to a group within a language (American vs English etc)
What to do next
- The XML data can be imported into wiktionary. This can be best done by a robot. I am about ready to tackle that; I have a clue how to do certain things.
- The conversion of nl:wiktionary needs to be completed
- It would be great if a developper interested in WikiData would create the tables as per the GEMET definitions and integrate that into the Mediawiki software and skins. This would be a usefull lesson for the creation of WikiData tables. This is because a functional database will not be as flat as what is currently suggested. By starting with a relatively simple model, we would learn two things. How to integrate a database in Mediawiki. How a subset of Wiktionary content would look like.
Question: who is going to do it, how are we going to proceed. Issue of en:wiktionary.
The GEMET data is quality data of the highest caliber. To be allowed to host it in an open way is in my mind a great tribute to the Wikimedia organisation.
La combinaison d’un même thésaurus - le GEMET : 9000 termes environnementaux traduits dans les diverses langues de l’Union Européenne - avec le langage XML permet d’envisager la création d’une toile d’échange d’informations environnementales de par le monde. Sachant par ailleurs que le thésaurus GEMET est maintenant « ouvert » pour accueillir d’autres thématiques plus orientées « développement durable », on peut en conclure que se construisent peu à peu des rails qui permettront d’échanger au niveau international tous les savoirs et bonnes pratiques pour le développement durable.
Dans cette optique, l'AEE organise, les 14 et 15 avril prochain, à Genève, une réunion dans le cadre du Programme des Nations Unies pour l'Environnement (PNUE), pour évoquer les initiatives européennes ayant déjà commencé à utiliser le GEMET et le langage XML. De bonne source, le PNUE serait sur le point d'adopter cette méthodologie.
