What conference? What scholarship?![edit]

This is the page that comes up when clicked on the banner ad of every Wikipedia page. I cannot believe such half-baked article has been thrown in just like that. Please make a better lead section explaining briefly what this "conference" and the "scholarship" is all about instead of 3 big paragraphs about Bombay city. If I want to know so much about Bombay, I'd visit its article page. Appreciate your efforts, thank you. - Niri.M 20:17, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Niri, point taken, we were not prepared for the rush. Correcting the same now. AroundTheGlobe 05:21, 26 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

That was quick, thank you! Still no proper information about the "scholarship" thing. I just read what you said about it in this Talk page under section Who is eligible for the scholarship?. Maybe write the same thing in the article too? I'd do it, but don't know a thing about this stuff. Many thanks. - Niri.M 13:28, 26 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
OK, just saw it's hidden down at the bottom. Surely deserves more attention that it currently does since it is being advertised about so much. My 2 paise. - Niri.M 13:33, 26 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Added a link on the top. Thanks, AroundTheGlobe 14:27, 26 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Still I am not getting that if any User of WIKI wants to attend the Conference, What to do ?, No need of any Special Scholarship.. Thanks.
Kindly await announcement on Registration for the event. AroundTheGlobe 12:31, 31 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Conference name decided[edit]

A discussion was held on the name of the forthcoming conference. The conference name has been decided as "WikiConference India", as per simple majority. The contents of this page are archived here. AshLin 05:38, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

There was a call for submission of logo designs and eight designs were submitted. There was a 48 hour voting window and the Community Chose Design Six (by Arvind Lodaya and Shekhar Krishnan) as the new event logo. The contents of the discussion are archived here. Schedule[edit]

what about volunteers offsite?[edit]

If we are not from the host cities, but still want to volunteer for the event. Can we?

Why not? AroundTheGlobe 13:57, 4 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Languages[edit]

Why is Swahili in the list and why are languages like Assamese, Punabi, Sindhi, Nepalbhasha, Sinhalese, Divehi, Tibetan, Dzonkha, Shahmukhi Punjabi, Pali, Romany, Fiji Hindi not in the list? Thank you.--Eukesh 20:25, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Eukesh, I have removed that --Naveenpf 02:56, 26 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Who is eligible for the scholarship?[edit]

Can we please have some info for the users as to who is eligible for the scholarship and also, what the scholarship is about? Thanks!

Anyone who really wants to attend the conference but cannot afford it monetary wise can apply. Your application will need to be very strong as there are few scholarships and many applicants. Do give information on what you have done on Wikimedia projects thus far/how you can help/how attending will benefit you or others. You dont need to be an experienced Wikipedia editor to apply (that is an added benefit), we encourage applications from newbies as well - their application should demonstrate their passion and enthusiasm and their reason for wanting to attend the event. Wikipedia is a Free and Open Knowledge base and people who support this in any way are encouraged to attend this conference. Cheers, AroundTheGlobe 06:46, 26 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Why protect the page[edit]

Why have the organizers asked to protect this page, preventing anonymous editing? Has there been a vandalism problem? Are we fighting off hordes of trolls? If not, let's not preclude the opportunity to benefit from anonymous contributions, please. Ijon 21:59, 27 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

2 reasons. One, annonymous people were adding themselves to teams without leaving any contact info. For that we have now set up a procedure to evaluate the possible new members of the WG (we are already 40+ and if there is no more hands required in that sphere, we just send a thank you note and keep their names on record if we need help in the future). Two, someone mischeviously added the name of some unknown Trust along with other details under registration. Rather than having to police pages (giving that we have a lot of other conference work to do), we thought it better to protect the page. AroundTheGlobe 05:05, 29 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

what is the eligibility and procedure of application for volunteers?[edit]

i am an engg student. please tell me what is the eligibility criteria for volunteers and what procedure should be done to apply for it?

We are not looking at the volunteer selection at the moment as it is a bit early, this will take place a lot closer to the event. AroundTheGlobe 07:58, 30 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to contribute by volunteering for the event in any aspect possible. Was a part of Wikipedia takes Chennai and loved the experience. I currently stay in Mumbai and would like to help. You can contact me at ananthashankar [dot] kr [at] gmail [dot] com Anantha Shankar K R (talk)

Kindly refer to point of contact on the WCI page. AroundTheGlobe 07:27, 2 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have filled up the form.So when can i expect to get a clear indication as to whether i have been bestowed the opportunity ?--Nisargstar 08:25, 5 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I take it you are talking of scholarships. The scholarship team will make its decision public once it goes through all the applications, probably by the 1st week of September. AroundTheGlobe 08:49, 5 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Is the conference open to one and all???--Nisargstar 09:54, 10 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yes! AroundTheGlobe 14:31, 10 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Apoligies for pestering on, but clarify this- If someone is not interested in the scholarship, can the person just land up at the venue without any paperwork( a.k.a registration).--Nisargstar 07:15, 12 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

No worries. On site registration is not guaranteed - it will depend on the number of people who have Pre-Registered. If you wish to attend, whether or not through scholarship we strongly advise registering when we open registration. AroundTheGlobe 08:01, 12 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Map of India and WikiConference India[edit]

I have raised the issue of mis-representation of the boundaries of India and WikiConference at the India notice board on en-Wiki, in that Wikipedia will be physically in Mumbai, India under the jurisdiction of Indian laws.[1] In my opinion mis-representation is a serious issur. More budget hotels, and laptops[edit]

Could a few more near-by budget stay options be suggested, please. Any opinion on Bentley's Hotel, 17 Oliver Road, Colaba? I'm non-schol, and cant find any others before the airport/s. Does the MTDC have any functioning Bed & Breakfast program participants between Churchgate-Colaba?

Also, would it be possible to arrange a facility to hire laptops for the conference duration?

Thanks VivekM 22:42, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Bentleys - though Iv never stayed there or had a look at the rooms, it looks like a budget hotel from the outside when Iv passed by. YWCA would be a good option - its about 5 mins walking distance from the venue. You could also check Chateau Windsor Hotel/Sea Green Hotels where scholars will be staying. There is a Residency Hotel on D.N. Road and a Hotel Causeway at Colaba, however I have never been there or had a look at the rooms so cant comment on that, they are both about 10-15 mins walking distance from the venue.
We are looking at the possibilities, if possible there will be an option.
Hope this helps! AroundTheGlobe 16:11, 10 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, yes it does. My query was based on (1) the number (750) "Attending" on the Conference's FB page, and (2) my notion that YWCA would not be for me - being male and not young. Having spoken to them and received clarification to the contrary, and with your suggestions, there's now enough options.
