Recommendation

Sharing a common vision helps people achieve goals that are out of reach for the individual.

Sharing a long-term vision promotes short-term motivation. Why? People want to understand how their work contributes to the big picture. A shared vision is what keeps people moving together in the same direction.

Our vision is:

A world, in which every single human being can freely share in the sum of all knowledge. (Jimmy Wales)

Usually, a vision is bigger than what the individual can achieve. To realize the vision, all people involved must not only work collaboratively towards achieving the common goal, but they must also have a clear idea about what the goal is. Telling people our vision of making the sum of all human knowledge freely accessible is the first – and perhaps the most important – step in motivating them to start contributing to Wikipedia.
