विकिपीडिया दस लाख लेखों पर पहुंचा[edit]

विकिमीडिया फ़ौंडेशन ने आज अपने विकिपीडिया प्रकल्प के दस लाखवे लेख के बनने की घोषना की । विकिपीडिया एक उपयोग, परिवर्तन तथा पुनर्वितरण के लिये आज़ाद ओन्लाइन विश्वकोष बनाने का प्रकल्प है (विकिपीडिया.ओर्ग) जिसकी शुरुआत जनवरी २००१ में हुई थी । अभी विकिपीडिया विश्व का सबसे बडा तथा सबसे ज़्यादा तेज़ी से बढने वाला विश्वकोष है । इसमे सौ से भी ज़्यादा भाषाओं में लेख लिखे जा रहे हैं । हर रोज़ विकिपीडिया में करीब २,५०० नये लेखों की व्रुध्दी होती है जिसके साथ साथ उससे दस गुना ज़्यादा पहले से मौजूद लेखों को बदला जाता है ।

विकिपीडिया पूरी तरह से स्वयमसेवकों द्वारा निर्मित किया जा रहा है । स्वयमसेवक अपना योगदान देते हैं, विकिपीडिया में ताज़ा जानकारी का समावेश करते हैं तथा लेखों को एक दूसरे के सहकार से बदलते है । विकिपीडिया के संस्थापक जिम्मी वेल्स केहते हैं "ग्यान को बांटने की आइडिया बहुत शक्तिशाली है । "

विकिपीडिया की कार्यपद्धति का संचालन विकिपीडिया की अधिकृत निश्पक्ष द्रष्टिकोण की कार्यनीति के द्वारा कीया जाता है, जो यह आवश्यक बनाता है की सारे सहयोगी लेखक अपने लेखों में पक्षपात से दूर रहें । चाहे लेख कीसी विवादास्पद विषयपे क्यों न हो, ईस कार्यपद्धति को मान के चलनेसे वैसे विषयों पर भी लेख बनाये जा सकते हैं । सहयोगी लेखक एक दूसरे के प्रदान के उपर लेख का विकास करते हैं, और त्रुटिपूर्ण संपादन जल्दी सुधारे जाते हैं । वेल्स ने कहा है की "Everything is peer-reviewed in real time," ।

Alexa.com के अनुसार विकिपीडिया अब इन्टरनेट पर दस सबसे लोकप्रिय वेबक्षेत्रों में से एक है । विद्यार्थी, पत्रकार और सामान्य संशोधनकारों में इसका उपयोग दिन-प्रतिदिन बढता जा रहा है । विकिपीडिया को समाचार, पुस्तकों, शैक्षणिक अध्ययन ग्रंथों, यहां तक की कानूनी दस्तावेजों जैसे विभिन्न स्थानों पर हज़ारों बार संदर्भ द्रष्टांत के रुप में बताया गया है ।

With its dedicated community of volunteers, Wikipedia has also gained recognition as a website for community interaction. This has led to Wikipedia winning two international prizes in 2004, the Prix Ars Electronica for "Digital Communities" and a Webby Award for "Best Community."

Wikipedia runs on a wiki software platform called MediaWiki, which allows anyone to edit a page at any time and have one's changes visible instantly (wiki means 'quick' in Hawaiian). Visitors can also examine older versions of pages to see how an article has developed.

In addition, static versions of Wikipedia are being prepared for release on CD or DVD. Soon to be available is a German-language version distributed by Directmedia Publishing, and a bilingual French/English version will be included as part of a Mandrakesoft Linux distribution.

All Wikipedia text is published under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation Licence (GFDL), which lets contributors enhance and modify each other's work based on a principle known as "copyleft." This means the licence allows third parties the right to reuse Wikipedia articles as long as they pass on that right to others. The MediaWiki software is available under a similar licence designed for software.

Wikipedia is becoming increasingly multilingual; for the past year, it has experienced most of its growth in languages other than English. Out of the more than 100 Wikipedia languages, 14 currently have over 10,000 articles (English: 343,000, German: 137,000, Japanese: 70,000, French: 51,000, Swedish: 39,000, Polish: 37,000, Dutch: 35,000, Spanish: 28,000, Italian: 23,000, Danish: 20,000, Portuguese: 15,000, Esperanto: 14,000, Chinese: 13,000, and Hebrew: 10,000).

In addition to Wikipedia, the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation (wikimediafoundation.org) supports several multilingual sister projects, including Wiktionary (a dictionary and thesaurus at wiktionary.org), Wikiquote (a compendium of famous quotations at wikiquote.org), Wikibooks (a collection of manuals and textbooks at wikibooks.org), and Wikisource (a repository of public domain documents at wikisource.org). All of these projects are published under the same licence and run on MediaWiki software. To support these projects, the Foundation has raised over US$100,000 (£55,000 or €80,000) since its creation. With changes being made every minute of every day, it is impossible to predict where Wikipedia and its sister projects will be one year from now. But Wikipedia's rate of growth has continued to increase in recent months, and at its current pace Wikipedia would double in size again by next spring.
