As with all (official or unofficial) Wikimedia processes, community input on these guidelines is both welcomed and expected. |
#wikipediaverbinden ist Wikipedias zentraler IRC-Channel. Neben den Wikipedianern, die den Channel häufig aufsuchen, wird er auch von Neulingen betreten, die einem Link folgen, oder die einfach den erstbesten Channel betreten, auch wenn sie nach Informationen zur Wikimedia Foundation oder zu anderen Wikiprojekten suchen. Man findet auch Benutzer vieler anderer Wikimedia- sowie ganz anderer Wikis in diesem Channel.
#wikipedia-enverbinden is similar to #wikipediaverbinden except that, whereas the latter is for discussion of all Wikipedias, it is for discussion of the English Wikipedia. Similar language variants exist, such as #wikipedia-esverbinden, #wikipedia-frverbinden and so on, but these are outside the scope of this document.
In Summary[edit]
#wikipediaverbinden is very much the first port of call for many who come to IRC for help with, or for information on Wikipedia, and this should always be borne in mind. #wikipedia-enverbinden is more project focused, on the English Wikipedia alone, while #wikipediaverbinden is about all Wikipedias. Both channels, however, may be the first that a new user comes into contact with, and it's important to think of the impression you might give a newcomer as you chat.
Thus, while the channels endeavour to be fairly relaxed, there are limits. These limits are largely "common sense", but it is easy for discussions to get heated - and at this stage the channel operators may need to step in to resolve things. Remember that these ops are only volunteers, and are simply trying to get things 'back on track' and avoid any larger problems such as seriously upset users!
Don't insult other users, or even the most vocal critics of Wikipedia, in the channel. Things said in a moment of lightheartedness have an annoying habit of getting back to you, or getting you listed on certain "anti-Wikipedia" webpages. Also, please avoid over-using swearwords. If at all possible, just don't use them at all - and if you're unsure if a word is appropriate, just find a nicer synonym. Remember that the channel is used by a broad range of people from a broad range of different backgrounds, and they may have a different tolerance for swearwords than you.
Occasionally the channels may come under attack from "bots". If this happens, don't panic! Make sure that the ops are informed and they will be able to deal with it - if no-one seems to be around, ask for help in #wikimedia-opsverbinden or #freenodeverbinden. If you find that you have a problem with a specific other user, and you can't resolve it yourself, contact an op for help and advice on how to avoid allowing the problem to escalate.
The purpose of the channels[edit]
The functions of the channels are:
- To be the front lobby of Wikimedia's IRC channels.
- To be a helpline for Wikipedia and other projects
- To provide admin help for users of Wikipedia and other projects
- To be a "Reference desk" for help with finding articles in Wikipedias
- For discussion about and collaboration on articles in Wikipedias
- For discussion about Wikipedia in general
Due to the great success of Wikipedia as compared with other Wikimedia projects, #wikipediaverbinden is often seen as the front of Wikimedia's IRC presence. Officially this is #wikimediaverbinden, but the fact remains most newcomers will go to #wikipediaverbinden, and this should be kept in mind.
In addition, the channels serve as Wikipedia's lounge, where Wikipedians discuss and debate encyclopedic subjects, the theory and practice of encyclopedias and their other common interests. The English Wikipedia onwiki environment can sometimes make socialising difficult, and #wikipedia-enverbinden has a very real role in facilitating community building through light hearted conversation. Despite this, certain standards of behaviour must be observed, both to avoid (further) damaging IRC's reputation on-Wiki, and to avoid alienating any other community members. It is well worth always being aware that other channels exist to which conversations can be moved if they become too 'heavy' or stray into particular off-limits territory (see below), such as #wikipedia-socialverbinden, ##philosophyverbinden and any ##usernameverbinden that you like (if created)!

This page sets out the core guidelines of the #wikipedia and #wikipedia-en channels, including the standards we expect both of its users and of its channel operators. Although these guidelines are important, they are not exhaustive and there is flexibility in their enforcement. For this reason, they are generally addressed as guidelines rather than rules.
Talking in the channels[edit]
The channels are often lively and involved in several discussions at once. It may look confusing to unaccustomed eyes, but don't worry about it - simply go ahead and ask your question. If the channel seems to be deserted, ask your question anyway, and somebody should be along shortly.
The topic of the channel, which should be displayed when you join by your client, is well worth reading. It may contain useful information or even the answer to your question.
The tone in the channels is usually anywhere between relaxed and academic. Please do not SHOUT (by using CAPS LOCK), insult people, or be disruptive on purpose. Be civil, and assume good faith. Try to tune your language to the register you would use between colleagues at the office, not in your living room or when addressing a public assembly.
Consider that people in the channels are of many different ages and from many different places, and have different language skills. Bear in mind that although IRC is an immediate medium, it doesn't transmit facial expressions and tones of voice, therefore subtle irony, cynicism and humor are likely to be misinterpreted. Consider this both when writing and when reading.
If you find somebody too annoying, rather than trying to fight it out, make use of the "/ignore" command (if your IRC client supports it) to hide their messages from your channel window. If somebody appears unwilling to talk to you, it's best to leave them alone.
Although English is the most often used and understood language in #wikipediaverbinden, there is no “official” language of the channel, and other languages may be used as well whereas #wikipedia-enverbinden discussions are primarily in English.
Topics[edit]
Wikipedians are encyclopedists, and they are interested in all things. All sorts of things are discussed, but due to the channel's name it is expected that Wikipedia itself be given priority when help is requested in this area.
The channels are frequently used to look for Wikipedia administrators and functionaries—checkusers and oversighters especially. However, please bear the following in mind:
- There are frequently admins idling and watching the channel. If the request is not urgent, please try simply asking. If there is no response, or if the request is urgent, use
!adminfollowed by your request. - Wikimedia functionaries—checkusers, oversighters, bureaucrats, etc.—are not always present in the channel. Feel free to use the stalkwords
!checkuserand!oversightto get their attention, but if there is no response, you may find it quicker to use another mode of communication:
- Oversight requests for the English Wikipedia are handled via a private mailing list. Send the diff(s) to oversight-l
lists.wikimedia.org. The requests page for other wikis differs from project to project, but a complete list of current oversighters can be found here: Oversight#Users with oversight rights. Visit the IRC channel (#wikipedia-<lang>) of the project in question, which may provide more information if the requests page is unclear. - CheckUser requests for the English Wikipedia are often less urgent, but a requests page exists at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations, which may generate a faster response. - Functionaries sometimes idle in private channels, such as #wikipedia-en-admins. Admins present in both channels are often willing to check private channels for functionaries only present there, but there is no guarantee. Sometimes the on-wiki processes work faster.
- Oversight requests for the English Wikipedia are handled via a private mailing list. Send the diff(s) to oversight-l
Please do not use the channels for the following:
- Canvassing for votes in RFA, AFD, DRV, etc.
- Canvassing for a Good Article nomination, or reviewing an article via IRC, bypassing the normal on-wiki GA review process
- Insulting, demeaning, plotting, planning or inciting actions against Wikipedians, trolls, vandals, Wikipedia critics, or anybody
- Flame wars
- Extensive discussions about private matters or subjects unconnected to Wikipedia. Use private messages or ad-hoc channels for those. Debates such as those related to politics and religion can often become heated very quickly, and may start to cause offence. These should not even be started in the channels - use ##philosophyverbinden or similar
- Spamming links or the same phrases repeatedly into the channel over time
- “Flooding” the channel, whereby so many lines of text get pasted in the channel that it becomes disruptive
- Running bots that speak in the channel or are operated through typing in the channel without the explicit permission of the channel contacts.
- Running bots which log the channel and make these logs public. This includes so-called "pisg" bots.
- Excessive swearing or insults

As in most other Wikimedia IRC channels, although it is perfectly acceptable for you to log your conversations for your own personal purposes, the posting of those logs (or any substantial part of them) in a public forum is strictly prohibited. Logs may only be published if people quoted in the text have given explicit consent.
Operators[edit]

The channel operators (‘ops’) are experienced members of the Wikipedia community and the #wikipediaverbinden and #wikipedia-enverbinden IRC channels, who are known to be level-headed, reliable and trustworthy. They have the ability to take various actions involved in the maintenance of the channel.
The ops are expected to maintain high standards of personal conduct on IRC, beyond the standards expected of other users and follow certain guidelines, which can be seen at IRC/wikipedia/Channel operator guidelines.
Responsibility for the channels[edit]
As with all Wikimedia IRC channels, ultimate responsibility lies with the Group Contacts. However, on a day to day basis the following contact has responsibility for managing the op team that, in turn, manage the channel. All concerns should be directed to them or any op.
