Calliope was the oldest of the nine Muses in Greek mythology. She was the muse of epic poetry or eloquence. A calliope is a musical instrument that Joshua Stoddard invented in 1855. It consists of a keyboard connected by wires to of whistles (usually brass) that play different notes. Calliopes were usually played on steamboats or in circuses. Calliope is also the name of the main character in Susan Cooper's book Westward and the name of a song by Tom Waits.
