This pages started out as a section of user:LA2/Extraktor stats 200709.

A selection of north European languages are measured.

Somewhere between 1 and 2 percent of all ISBNs in Wikipedia tend to be outright bad. Apparently, nobody is watching this, since a small manual effort could correct the problem.

Even when the ISBN looks good, it could of course be an ISBN for another book, or the book might be a bad reference source. And a lot of articles lack sources. But that is a much larger problem, that isn't addressed here.

Some ISBNs use spaces where hyphens are recommended, or put the hyphens in the wrong places, or just write 10 digits without any separation. These errors account for one third of all ISBNs in Wikipedia. The error is entirely cosmetic, and doesn't change the usefulness of the ISBN links. Automatic software (based on CPAN Perl module Business::ISBN) can detect these cases and suggest improvements. A bot could handle that.
