Telling your program stories - all programs[edit]

Please tell the story of each of your programs included in your proposal. This is your chance to tell your story by using any additional metrics (beyond global metrics) that are relevant to your context, beyond the global metrics above. You should be reporting against the targets you set at the beginning of the year throughout the year. We have provided a template here below for you to report against your targets, but you are welcome to include this information in another way. Also, if you decided not to do a program that was included in your proposal or added a program not in the proposal, please explain this change. More resources for storytelling are at the end of this form. Here are some ways to tell your story.

  • We encourage you to share your successes and failures and what you are learning. Please also share why are these successes, failures, or learnings are important in your context. Reference learning patterns or other documentation.
  • Make clear connections between your offline activities and online results, as applicable. For example, explain how your education program activities is leading to quality content on Wikipedia.
  • We encourage you to tell your story in different ways by using videos, sound files, images (photos and infographics, e.g.), compelling quotes, and by linking directly to work you produce. You may highlight outcomes, learning, or metrics this way.
  • We encourage you to continue using dashboards, progress bars, and scorecards that you have used to illustrate your progress in the past, and to report consistently over time.
  • You are welcome to use the table below to report on any metrics or measures relevant to your program. These may or may not include the global metrics you put in the overview section above. You can also share your progress in another way if you do not find a table like this useful.

Improving Quality and Content[edit]

Expanding Telugu Village Articles with Census data[edit]

Screen record video capturing improvement of two Telugu Wikipedia Village articles during the period of 2007 - 2017
Absolute bytes trend in Telugu Wikipedia till December 2017 - It shows an all-time hike in last trimonthly of 2017

A2K continued working on improvement Telugu Village Articles in collaboration with Telugu Wikipedians, which turned into the second phase of the project by employing more automation and better collaboration with community members in 2017 last trimonthly. Using information created out of census data, by January 2015 more than 15,000 Telugu Wikipedia articles about Telangana and Andhra Pradesh Villages got improved. Each of these articles improved with information about Literacy, Educational facilities, Medical facilities, Geographical Location, Demographics, Drinking water, Sanitation, Communication, Transport, Market, Banking Facilities, Entertainment, Nutrition Amenities, Electricity, Land Use, Manufacturing & Agriculture Products.

Background

In 2006 Telugu Wikipedians created Tens of thousand pages about Telugu Villages with a very basic information. Telugu Wikipedia Community considered improving these articles as one of the major priorities from then.[1] During discussions about Quality of Telugu Wikipedia, community many times discussed importance of improving those stubs.[2] Wikipedians who are interested in geographical articles improved these articles mainly with demographic data, categorization & templates. Wikimedians who took interest in some district articles improved geographic articles of those districts. Some village articles naturally gained attention from Unregistered users & Wikipedians got improved with some information. But grossly Telugu Wikimedians considered less content in these village articles as a threat to the quality of the project.

Creating information from data - Policies & discussions around it

Renowned environmentalist Madhav Gadgil incubated the idea of creating a complete village article with information about geographic, demographic, amenities & facilities from Census data available in Government Website. In collaboration with Team set up by Gadgil, A2K started working on Telangana & Andhra Pradesh articles in Telugu language, which were later discussed in Telugu Wikipedia Village pump, widely especially about what information can be allowed into articles, what is the style of articles that has to be taken place, considering wide impact of this project. A2K developed a model template articles which matches with accepted style guide discussed by the community. A2K coordinated discussion sessions for Wikipedians with Madhav Gadgil & Subodh Kulkarni. One of the Telugu Wikipedians, Bhaskara Naidu started contributing to this project from February 2017, by publishing automated content in Village articles and improving its language to make it more humanly created the article.

Second phase from October 2017

Improving base articles produced out of automation, helped Wikipedians who are working on this project to avoid repetitive work to improve grammar, transliterate places names and style of the Base article. Current base automation article is being published with very little changes like extra spaces. A2K in collaboration with User:Chaduvari started working on Model template article and improved Logic for better automation and worked with a programmer to create code based on the logic. Using this code, we can create automated base articles that match style guide for Village articles & reduce human effort. By transliterating data present in 2011 census and running code on it, coordinators of this project created automated articles with census data.

Wikimedians Bhaskara Naidu, Yerra Ramarao, JVRK Prasad, Venkata Ramana and others who showed interest in this project, received automatically created articles in district wise. They are publishing these content in corresponding village article by making small changes required.

Way forward

Currently, more than half of the Village articles got improved with information from census data and the wiki project village articles is working to improve remaining. Using Wikipedia add-on in Google Chrome while transliterating of village names, Co-ordinators of this project also generating UIDs of Wikidata (Q Numbers) for each village which further will be used to improve them with census data. This will enable Wikimedians to update (Wikidata & then Wikipedias) whenever new census data is created. By 2018, Total Village articles in Telugu Wikipedia are more than 41%. Many a times, Community expressed concern about these articles mentioning less content in these pages would effect impression on quality of project among readers. So, improving village articles with this content helps improving quality of Telugu Wikipedia in to a large extent. This project also will also provide learnings for Larger Wikimedia Communities that attempt creating information with large data sets.

Increasing Reach[edit]

Reach out wider Telugu community[edit]

Telugu Wikipedia has facebook pages & twitter accounts which were managed by interested users. One of such page is even having more than 7 thousand followers and is regularly engaging with them. A2K supported community members to devise social media strategy and some guidelines to in accordance to that strategy for Telugu Wikimedia projects. Wikimedians. In upcoming months, A2K conduct online training sessions for community leaders who are trying to make their social media presence felt to learn how to utilize social media as a platform to spread awareness about the movement.

Using various social media platforms, We are popularizing several aspects of Telugu Wikimedia projects like information, quality, diversity, community, etc., As part of it, Telugu Wikipedians discussed issues faced in handling social media pages of Telugu Wikipedia and solutions for the issues in Wikipedia Village pump. Community discussed things like How better we can promote Wikimedia projects, what kind of posts can be acceptable, how should one get editing rights in facebook pages and other such aspects. We also framed some guidelines in this regard. This helps us to get authentic information from social media pages

Strengthening existing community[edit]

Telugu Wikisource Workshop[edit]

Telugu Wikisource Workshop 2017 03

Telugu Wikisource Workshop was conducted on 22 & 23 of July 2017 in Hyderabad. As many Telugu Wikipedians who are interested in contributing Wikisource don't know the over all steps in completing eBook and also some of the Wikisource Volunteers don't know how to use tools like OCR, Workshop focused in participants learning about overall Wikisource process (from uploading a pdf to Commons till making it a downloadable eBook) and useful tools like OCR. They were taught important aspects such as copyright, Creative Commons licenses as this would help them select books to upload on Wikisource. Existing Wikimedians and New Volunteers who are interested in contributing to Telugu Wikisource Project and are willing to learn the process of Wikisource are selected to event. New volunteers who participated in this event continued contriubuting consistantly and become very active in project.

I am contributing to Telugu Wikisource for a long time, regularly. I could learn how to do some important aspects of Telugu Wikisource like indexing a book and techniques like OCR in this event. This turned out to be a very useful event. As resource persons are from Telugu language and sessions were in Telugu, I could easily and quickly grasp things.

Wikidata Workshop[edit]

A2K supported by fecilitating Wikidata workshop that Asaf Bartov conducted to existing Wikimedians in Hyderabad. A2K co-ordinated with active community members in and around Hyderabad to attend the event and contribute. Later trained and collaborated with other Wikimedians who have not chance to attend the event which resulted to the improvement of Items about Andhra Pradesh villages in Wikidata. NTR Trust provided food and venue for this event.

Wikipedia Education Program review[edit]

On 10 December 2017, A2K team arranged Nichole Saad visits Andhra Loyola College where there are Wikipedia activities from past few years and VVIT where Indic Wikimedian Krishna Chaitanya Velaga is trying to start a new WEP. In Andhra Loyola College, Management and A2K could review past activities and discuss how to scale up the current program. Nichole interacted with ALC students, management and staff who are been part of WEP or being interested to be part of future activities during the visit. In VVIT, Krishna Chaitanya lead meetings with management where Nichole could give her insights and suggestions about successful Wikipedia Education Program. Nichole, Krishna Chaitanya and A2K team members, met interested students in the college and could interact with them about WEP.

To improve retention in new editors getting on-board, A2K Worked with Communities of Interest and trained New Wikimedians individually. As the part of these activities, we invited only two members who are already part of a WhatsApp group - "Padya Soundaryam" which celebrates, expounds and critically discuss Classical Telugu poetry which is successfully running without any deviation from focus for years. A2K followed and trained individually these two new volunteers who started contributing to Telugu Wikisource from "Telugu Wikisource Workshop". Those 2 Volunteers continued to contributing Telugu Wikisource since then for months.
A2K encouraged users like Shiv's fotographia and Aditya pakide to take up #100WikiCommonsDays challenge, where Aditya pakide signed up for Wikipedia after individual training session. Used challenge as an opportunity to get into continous engagement with them and followed-up with their quiries and encouraged him by publishing videos with their photos in Social Media and by notifying their work in Telugu Wikipedia Village pump for improving utilization of their work in Wikipedia articles. This resulted in retention of the users and hundreds of quality pictures to Commons. Currently out of 180+ pictures uploaded by these two users 29 are being used in articles of several Wikipedias including Telugu Wikipedia.[3]
