Wikicracy is a proposal for a Wikimedia project to organize and provide specific knowledge and data on government entities including countries, international organizations, and intranational organizations.

Note on name: The proposed name is by no means a concrete suggestion. If you have a better idea for a name, suggest one!

Focus of the project would be three-fold:

  • To provide those interested with detailed information on the actions and events of various governments, both current and upcoming.
  • To enlist citizens in becoming more civil-literate.
  • To allowing citizens to get involved in the inner-workings of their governments by providing resources to turn their opinions in to proposed public policy.

[edit] Information services

One of the main goals of this proposed project would be to provide detailed and accurate information on government entities from international organizations (such as NATO, EU, OPEC and UN) to the individual boards and commisions of municipalities (such as the Board of Trustees of the Dallas Independent School District). Other organizations would also be covered in depth, notably, non-profit organizations, press outlets, and corporations within certain industries like health and defense. (Needs to be clarified)

[edit] Specifics provided

This proposed project would provide contact information of the offices of various government institutions. It would also provide schedules and meeting places of councils, boards, and commissions.

[edit] Why not Wikipedia

Wikipedia is an encyclopedia. While it is not a paper encyclopedia it does have community-set limits that would be hard to overtake with concensus. For example, Wikipedia would definately frown upon the inclusion of contact addresses and phone numbers being included in an article, and rightly so since such information would not be encyclopediac. This proposed project would be a companion to the Wikipedia project. Whereas Wikipedia would be a large sword for great use in general, this proposed project would be scalpel, sharp and precise.
