A CentralNotice is a banner in top of pages of every page on a certain project centrally organised for multiple projects at the same time. This banner can be used for informing readers and editors of Wikipedia and her sister projects about certain activities. On this page examples and requests can be added before they go live.
The policy in Wikimedia is to target a banner as specific as possible and show it as little as possible to readers and editors for who it is not relevant. To many banners at the same time are after each other leads to banner blindness what causes that users see the banner less. The banner should only be used if a wide audience needs to be reached and other ways of communication are not sufficient.
If the notice is about a topic of advocacy (influencing legislation/laws or proposals for it), the legal team of the Wikimedia Foundation needs to be contacted first! (For example contact Stephen LaPorte.) It is strongly recommended to send and e-mail with more information to the mailing list Publicpolicy. You also need to be sure, especially with this topic, you have consensus to enable a banner on those wikis.
To show a banner, certain characteristics are needed to be set:
- Start date and start time (make clear which time zone and UTC +/- ...)
- End date and end time (make clear which time zone and UTC +/- ...)
- On which projects should the banner be shown? You can only choose from: all, Wikipedia, Wiktionary, Wikiquote, Wikibooks, Wikidata, Wikinews, Wikisource, Wikiversity, Wikivoyage, Wikimedia, Commons, Meta, Wikispecies
- Notice that it is not possible to select an individual wiki!
- In which languages should the banner be shown?
- Notice that readers (not logged in) see the banner in the default language of the wiki and editors (logged in) see the banner in the language set in their preferences. On a language specific wiki, users can have set a different language than the default language of that wiki.
- If the banner text is only provided in one language, this text will be shown to everyone in all the languages the banner is enabled for.
- If a banner text is translated in multiple languages, always an English translation must be provided. If for an enabled language no translation is available, the banner will be shown in English.
- In which countries should the banner be shown?
- To which people should the banner be shown? You can only choose from: logged in users, anonymous users, or all.
- On which devices should the banner be shown? You can only choose from: desktop computer, Android OS, iPhone, iPad, unknown mobile site, all, and/or a combination.
- Is it possible to limit the traffic of the banner? You can choose from: 0% - 100%, or the number of times a banner is shown to someone.
Most CentralNotice messages are simple banners, which consist out a simple box. This box can be with or without background, with or without border, possible an image on the left, possible an image on the right, a centrally aligned text and linking to a landing page.
Before a banner can be implemented, you need to file a request with a minimum of 10 days on forehand at the page CentralNotice/Request. There you can Indicate that Romaine will implement the banner.
