Hello, I am Ziko van Dijk, a German who lives in the Netherlands. Before SUL I was Ziko-W at Meta, and Ziko-C at Commons. My primary user page is my German Wikipedia Benutzerseite which I created in 2003.
On the Wikimedia wikis I have tried a lot of things, and stuck with some fields I was more interested in than others: especially research and outreach.
Since april 2011 I am president of Wikimedia Nederland. Here is a report in diary form on the recent Wikimedia Conference 2012 in Berlin.

[edit] Person and Wikimedia
As a historian (PhD) and Wikipedian my subject is the history of the 20th century (Germany, the Netherlands, international relations). Besides, I try to make the Wikipedia articles easier to understand and improve the help pages.
In Wikimedia I am interested in organizational structures and outreach. I am a member of Wikimedia Deutschland e. V. and Vereniging Wikimedia Nederland. I am also part of the Wikimedia Research Committee. When I am at a convention I usually take pictures, for example: Community Tag of the German chapter 2008. From time to time I contribute to the Kurier, the German equivalent of Wikipedia:Signpost.
[edit] User
Although I am registered at many Wikimedia projects, my user pages I visit more or less frequently are (links to my user page there):
- Deutschsprachige Wikipedia
- Esperantlingva Vikipedio
- Nederlandstalige Wikipedia
- English Wikipedia
- Wikimedia Commons
- German Wikibooks
- Wikisource
You can contact me the best by writing on the de.wp talk page or sending an E-mail.
[edit] Educational and promotional work
On German Wikipedia I am a mentor, and I have written a German Wikibook for the self learner who wants to become a Wikipedian: „Eigene Beiträge“. In August 2010 Open Source Press published Wikipedia. Wie Sie zur freien Enzyklopädie beitragen, a text book in German.
I blog: zikoblog at Wordpress.
For Wikimedia promotion I took pictures of pupils in the Netherlands, presented at Commons as Wikipedia Youngsters. I am flattered that Wikimedians sometimes use these pictures or pictures I took at conventions.
For Esperanto Wikipedia I have designed this flyer (pdf) which we spread among Esperanto speakers at the World Congress in 2008. And there is the booklet Vikipedio por vi.
[edit] Multilingual Wikipedia
Under the name Multilingual Wikipedia I have build up some content about the fact that Wikipedia has many editions in different languages. If you want to get some tips, you can have a look at this Manual for small and new Wikipedias. If you want to tell us about your language edition, you can tell us about your Wikipedia here (and read about others).
On my German user page I have published Handbuch der Vielsprachigen Wikipedia. It is still a fragment, and I will possibly not complete it or translate it into English, but use it some day for a larger project in English.
[edit] Wikipedia research
I did research about Wikipedias in small or "weak" Wikipedias (Third World, planned languages, small Germanic languages and dialects). My question is why some Wikipedias do better than others, what factors make them grow or keep them small, like number of speakers, economics, status, linguistic factors, a culture of knowledge and support from the linguistic community.
