From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Hidden?[edit]

Hi, regarding this : [1] i don't think the fact the link was not at the usual place was not meant to "hide it from everyone else", a box called "wikimedia" is not secretive, nor is it's content unannounced. I felt this box is just more practical. How could i have known beforehand that i had to advise the ElectCom where my meta: link was and that it wouldn't find it? I gave the information as fast as i could once noticed (and i wasn't even personnaly noticed, i just saw it was removed from the endorsement section, so the communication is lagging here). The ElectCom's inability to find the link at first doesn't justify the non-reinstatement, it is not my inability that is at stake. Furthermore since the vote was struck before the deadline and my id has now been confirmed it should have been reinstated, but since it doesn't matter for Frieda's endorsement i don't ask the EC to reconsider, the only thing would be to make the advices clearer for any possible and future endorsement campaign. Thank you for your understanding, (:Julien:) 09:27, 25 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your comments and understanding. The improvement of formatting regulations and instruction will be a good topic, specially after we finish the present issues we need to deal with within a deadline. Cheers, --Aphaia 09:54, 25 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Translations[edit]

It is a genuine pleasure. Having myself being a candidate in the past and not running this time, there could be nothing more satisfying on an emotional level than making a small effort to give something (if ever so minor) back into the system from which one has been the beneficiary in the past. -- Cimon Avaro 11:02, 25 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Spam bot page[edit]

As this was previously blocked for a week by me for the same offence can I ask you to consider your block. Based on this a much longer block would seem indicated. Thanks & regards --Herby talk thyme 14:04, 25 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your notice, .anaconda blocked it again log. I support him and you, it could deserve even more. --Aphaia 14:08, 25 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Election debate[edit]

I'm wondering why you moved the election debate page into Tawker's userspace. I see no evidence that the debate is going to be in any way biased (note that Dmcdevit, who's generally impartial, has offered to moderate such a debate). In any event, the page makes clear that it's a non-official event, not affiliated with the election or election officials in any way. I'm not affiliated with the debate in any way, and find myself questioning whether it will work, but that's no reason to dismiss the idea altogether. Frankly, I don't see where it's your job to "suppress" such a page; unless you're doing it as an official action of the Election Committee, with full approval of other Election Officials, then it's merely an editorial action, and one that I'm inclined to revert, unless you have a legitimate reason for leaving it where it is. Ral315 (talk) 05:47, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think it is clear it is solely his enterprise while it is hosted on main namespace. At first Tawker even put on the Election official system and put no disclaimer. He did it later but only I after pointed out. And moreover, he had promised to do that before he had created the page. For that reason, I don't think it is appropriate to keep it in the former way.
And please note, Tawler told me not to comment. It is contradict imo he stated he is not the organizer. I have no good reason any main space page, even unofficial, to shut out Election Committee member. That is the second reason I think it better hosted under his user page, as I insisted it should have been.
I would like to make it clear it is not yet approved as such. The current situation is, in my opinion, not enough. Now Eleccom has a discussion w/ at least two members who are now surely in bed and I admit my action was a bit haste, but also I'll appreciate you to respect my edits. It is clear we have no time to argue it closely for preparing the voting system in 39 hours and therefore we are not handy to issue any other the official comment about voting itself. --Aphaia 05:52, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I do protest this action in the strongest possible terms. There was no attempt whatsoever on that page to introduce partisan politics and yet you claim under the power of your official position (and to the extent I can see, without any discussion whatsoever) that discussion of the issues at hand is not permitted anywhere on a WMF owned page except under the official question page. An well thought argument was made and steps were taken to resolve the conflict of interest that I openly admitted existed. I have looked for (and found) a neutral moderator, since - as you suggest - I am not neutral. You have chosen instead to stifle debate. What is there to gain by restricting discussion and debate over the issues at hand? If this is your position that you feel that you must dictate over attempts for a free and open discussion I feel I have no choice but to ask for your immediate resignation. -- Tawker 06:26, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
In light of recent events, I feel the issue has been addressed and I have no further concern as to the above-mentioned matter. I hope this incident, of which I am positive we both regret portions of the statements that have been made and that they will not hamper future opportunities for allowing transparent open discussion on such critical matters such as the future of the foundation itself. -- Tawker 05:15, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I respect your edits, but I believe that the wording in your edit summary was misleading (probably unintentionally), making it seem as if it were an official action. I also don't think that it's solely his enterprise, as I've seen other users commenting on it, and many board candidates willing to participate. I can't speak toward his comments toward you (and generally am not aware of them). Part of why I'm interested in this is that I'm working on an interview for the Wikipedia Signpost on en.wp, and was planning to transwiki it here, in mainspace, and was a bit curious about the implications of the move. Ral315 (talk) 06:00, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for bringing up my careless wording. Exactly it wasn't intended to sound official action - if so, I would have commented in the third person or noted "on which behalf" whatsoever.
Signpost. I personally request you to move them ideally after you got replies from all the candidates. Already information spreading is not wholly equal, and now we Eleccom are busy to diminish the differences. I am aware however it would be not realistic we expect to get answers from all the candidates. But your effort to pursue neutrality will be appreciated. As for the location, how about hosting them as Wikipedia Signpost subpage(s) and put a link to/from question page where you submitted the first question? We could later discuss which treatment will be better, hopefully --Aphaia 06:08, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I wouldn't move them until they're almost all, or all, replied to, certainly. I'll get in touch with you as more responses trickle in; the reason I really would like to move them to Meta eventually is because I'm trying to get translations of them, to make it a sort of unofficial, neutral election guide. In other languages, they'd get more exposure on Meta than on the English Wikipedia. Ral315 (talk) 06:26, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fixes for Boardvote UI[edit]

Hi, please on http://wikimedia.spi-inc.org/index.php?title=MediaWiki:Boardvote_entered/pt&action=edit fix the url from [[Especial:Boardvote/dump]] to [[Special:Boardvote/dump]] and at http://wikimedia.spi-inc.org/index.php?title=MediaWiki:Boardvote_entry/pt&action=edit please remove the <!-- tag for HTML comment -->. Thanks in advance 555 00:21, 28 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Check[edit]

Aphaia, I want to translate the new text of https://wikimedia.spi-inc.org/index.php/Special:Boardvote/vote into Cantonese; the current text is out-dated. Hillgentleman 02:51, 29 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Hillgentleman. I'd recommend you to create a page on your wiki like zhwiki's zh:Wikipedia:理事会选举 and put all necessary messages into that page. After you zh-yue people finish it, please let us know. --Aphaia 03:37, 29 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't mean you could fix it locally. I rather asked you to create a set of zh-yue messages which we will be able to put to the Vote wiki. After you finish translation, sure, we'll take care of moving. Thanks. --Aphaia 04:34, 29 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks ,Aphaia. Board elections/2007/Interface translation/diff/zh-yue is updated and copyedited.Hillgentleman 03:45, 30 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Done, could you please let me know where we have other setting files? The list of required files are at: https://wikimedia.spi-inc.org/index.php/Boardvote%2A/zh-yue. Thanks! --Aphaia 07:03, 30 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks. I guess we have to translate those red-linked files anew (or else the readers must read the English version). This is acceptable for the moment, at least, since the English files are up-to-date.Hillgentleman 20:58, 2 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Danke

Hallo, siehe bitte mal Meta:Babel templates. Gruss, --Aphaia 07:52, 29 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Debate[edit]

Hello and thanks for the remark. I was not sure where to put the translation of the IRC channel debate and could not get a conclusion with my fellow Wikimedians. I'll keep that in mind the next time. Wpedzich 10:02, 30 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You are welcome. As for placement, how about its subpage? It could be linked from VPs, but in my opinion it is not okay to put Board elections/2007/pl, even if we don't think it official translation (we cannot be responsible for what we cannot understand), since it may cause confusion. --Aphaia 10:06, 30 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

UK Translation for Board elections 2007[edit]

--Aphaia 12:48, 1 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Gruss, --Aphaia 13:12, 1 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
should I move it to uk-Wikipedia or is it automated. Because I think, I have no permission to do this. And to translated Text, what mean msg about unsigned certificate,- shuold user ignore it or what? --Panas 13:50, 1 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
If you would be okay to wait, it is okay. If an Ukwiki sysop helps us, it is okay for me. And "msg about unsigned certificate", it is a small problem now we are trying to fix. In my personal opinion, While we think it causes no harm, if people are not happy to accept it right now, they'd try to vote in a few days. --13:59, 1 July 2007 (UTC)
Okay, i have reported to uk-sysop. And to certificate - is it Ok if I add to my uk-translation: "... you can ignore this msg or try to vote again in few days" or have You better proposal? Think that I should explain user what is to do with this msg. --Panas 14:47, 1 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, it is only my personal idea, if you quote me on the wiki, like discussion page, just an opinion from an individual who is working on it, it is okay, but please do not include it into the system message. Rather I think it is a matter of decision of each Wikimedian. Thank you. --Aphaia 14:54, 1 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your time. And that msg, I let it be. --Panas 15:06, 1 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome! --Aphaia 15:10, 1 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Frieda[edit]

Done. I will always delay anyone coming that late, even if he/she will be my fav candidate. People must learn that small communities do NOT find translators in the middle of the road. If they are interested in our votes they need to work for them. If they really are in hurry with their marketing I can advice places where they can buy instant translations in pms and get independent. When you pay money you can always come when you please, but if you ask people to work for free you must make the effort to understand what it means to manage alone a full interface, plus candidates' statements, etc :) BTW, next time pls let's have a wider time window. There was a lot of interesting stuff in the Q&A sections that almost nobody managed to translate. It would be nice if we had a deadline BEFORE publishing the statements, so they can reach the public all toghether and appear as already translated. At that point we will have some spare time to cover stuff like debates, Q&A, etc --Bèrto 'd Sèra 09:45, 2 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for work always, and moreover, suggestive opinions. I feel sorry there are some ideas we cannot realize in this Election and force you to work under a hard condition. However I feel relieved even in this situation we could hold four days window between the closure of acceptance and vote opening. Othrewise your favorite candidate had failed to be confirmed :X
It is very sure we will invite the community to review the election process after all has done, then your proposal about timeline will be very appreciated. Cheers, --Aphaia 09:51, 2 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Die Wahl zum Board[edit]

Hi,

Thank you for your message,
As Board elections/2007/FAQ/de said, no one but who is responsible for tallying will know whom you voted. So your ballot is secret.
Danke fuer deine Nachricht,
--Aphaia 21:06, 2 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Aphaia, You might want to delete Board election/2007/Candidates/YOUR USER NAME/en and revert [3] from User:201.220.222.140, who might not have seen that the acceptance of new candidates is over. Best regards --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 07:23, 3 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That was fast :) Btw, what's the difference between bolded messages and not? ...Aurora... 12:27, 4 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hehe :) Bolded messages are a minimum set in my opinion, and the rest is what I suppose make no great harm even given in another language. Ideally all messages are expect to translate, though. --Aphaia 12:30, 4 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

DIscussion[edit]

Hi Aphaia. Because the board voting is being conducted on the external site this year, I don't think the Meta board vote admins are necessary any more. So, I have proposed that the old board vote admin flags from last election be removed here on Meta. See this discussion on Meta:Babel. Picaroon (Talk) 04:20, 5 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Permissions question[edit]

On the Akan Wikibooks where I'm the only sysop, I've held an election to confirm my status, and to see if people want me as a bureaucrat??

Is this the right way to go about things for the Requests for permissions page??

Thanks, --WiganRunnerEu 14:08, 6 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, WiganRunnerEu, for bureaucrat flag, yes, please go ahead to Requests for permissions. Happy editing! --Aphaia 14:52, 6 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I will go to Requests for permissions as you suggested. Is it OK to run the election for a week, to get consensus?? On the Akan Wikibooks - ak:wikibooks:Main Page there's a very small community, only 3 editors so far, will it matter if I only get a small number of votes?? --WiganRunnerEu 22:04, 6 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    • I recommend you to go to Requests for permissions after you build the request page on Akan Wiki and have a vote, if you haven't done so. The number of editors are no matter, so don't worry but you need to get consensus regardless the size of your community. --Aphaia 04:35, 7 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Aphaia. There are a few errors on Board elections/2007/en:

  • the software and third party are not specified: "through the dedicated software (now being discussed)" and "an outside third-party organization now being contacted";
  • the page states that "the names of voters [...] will not be posted on-wiki", although they are publicly posted. That line should be reworded, removed, or the public list removed.

Thanks for your work organizing the 2007 elections. :) —{admin} Pathoschild 23:05:41, 06 July 2007 (UTC)

Hello, thank you for bringing them up. I'll reword the first point ... the second point ... well it is not on normal-wiki page, or is it? We would emphasis the names of voters are not on wiki as editable. Do you have any suggestion? Cheers, --Aphaia 03:27, 7 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think it makes a difference what type of web site the list is published on; someone could presumably copy it to a wiki page anyway. What about just "we will not publicly list the candidates you supported", which is more relevant to the secret ballots the parenthesis is about? —{admin} Pathoschild 20:18:36, 07 July 2007 (UTC)
Thanks, that looks good. —{admin} Pathoschild 01:47:08, 08 July 2007 (UTC)

Hi... this image (used on the WMF 'current staff' page) is now on Commons as well so perhaps the local copy can be removed. ++Lar: t/c 14:31, 8 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

To be clear the image referred to is this one: wikimedia:Image:Sue Gardner Headshot A (medium) FULL.jpg but it can be replaced by this one: Image:Sue Gardner Headshot A (medium) FULL.jpg if desired, just as some other ones on that page use the Commons version, (and some don't). So maybe keeping them ALL on the WMF site is the way to go? Right now it's a mix. Where's the best place to discuss this? No rush really, though. ++Lar: t/c 01:42, 9 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your suggestion, Lar. Well ... I uploaded both two files. About Wikimedia Foundation site, I experienced some bitterness (used files hosted on Commons were [speedily] deleted without any caution), as fail safe, I prefer to keep it locally. However, it might used on our other projects, I assumed (including meta), so uploaded it to Commons too. In a long term I think those files will better to keep locally but personally I have no enough time to manage it. Hope this information helps you consider figuring out the best way. Cheers, --Aphaia 01:56, 9 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It does. Do you think then that it might be prudent to move/copy the other pics on that page that are NOT hosted on WMF (but are on commons only) locally then? Right now it's some of each. Given your concerns it does seem like that's the way to regularise. Also, probably some licensing info should come along with? (this would be a project for someone, I'm not saying YOU should do it... I might tackle it if I have time) ++Lar: t/c 11:13, 9 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Well that's it. Licensing. That is one other reason I think it hard to switch to Commons ... It wouldn't be ideal but some of upload on that website lack licensing information. --Aphaia 15:52, 9 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

How to whitelist my site[edit]

I'm very sorry Aphaia to post my message here.

But I'm posting it becuase you reviewed my request to whitelist tutorialpoint.com. I don't know exactly how my site was put in blacklist but now I'm not getting a way to come out of it event site is very clean useful, educational and informational and free. All the sysop review my request and everytime I get -ve answer that it was blacklisted because of cross spaming.

So my request to you is that please tell me a way so that I can bring my site back to whitelist. Hope I will get some +ve response from you. I can make sure that in future if there is any spam/wrong post from tutorialspoint then it can be banned fro ever but atleast I need a chance to motivate myself so that I can contribute to wiki as well.

Best regards Mohtashim ( Tutorialspoint.com )

Spam on ja[edit]

Hi Aphaia - just found a great new tool for cross wiki contribs. It shows a spammer on ja.wikipedia among a number of other places. I've indef blocked where I can (& if you want the ip it's in the CU log with my name!) and deleted. This is the link you need - cheers --Herby talk thyme 08:18, 16 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nice tool, I'll notice my fellow editors. Did you blacklist those links already? --Aphaia 09:36, 16 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
No - my past experience of the Meta blacklist has been less than helpful. Equally I only just realised that that provides such good evidence of cross wiki spamming (it is in the local list as I spotted the user on Books when they created it). The tool is excellent for spam, spambots, vandals etc - reagrds --Herby talk thyme 09:44, 16 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Those links were
topbearing\.cn
jiadev\.com
hs-pv\.com
yg-pump\.com
086pm\.cn
if you want to put them on the global blacklist (I can't see they have any relevance and the behaviour is that of a spammer). Regards --Herby talk thyme 12:44, 17 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Now they has come to meta too. See the diff. I blacklisted those links. --Aphaia 04:29, 18 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Aphaia - I see they have been busy across wikis again and so blacklisting is correct in my opinion --Herby talk thyme 06:49, 18 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wikinvest[edit]

Hi Aphaia -- not sure how often you check the interwiki discussion page, so I wanted to reply directly. I'm not sure how you missed the edit buttons or the recent changes at [www.wikinvest.com wikinvest] -- edit buttons are on every article and every section break. Check again and I think you'll see them. Recent changes are displayed in the blue bar on every page... they fade in an and out using javascript. protection[edit]

23:52, 20 June 2007 Aphaia (Talk | contribs | block) protected "Request for an account on the Foundation wiki" (vandalize [edit=autoconfirmed:move=autoconfirmed]) (change protection)

???

ant

The page was semiprotected after some anons submits his or her request obsessively even rejected. Anyway we need to let anons and reckless newbies have the accounts in questions? I don't think so. --Aphaia 04:07, 18 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I am not sure people should mandatorily have to create an account on meta, to be allowed to have an account on foundation. What I actually find odd is the very low level of requests. By the way... since I think about it, WMF site is now roughly 3 years old. One day, it will make sense to check active/inactive accounts. Anthere
It's gotten vandalised already. :( Perhaps it's best to restore the protection? After all, aren't most users who are active on the foundation active on Meta or at least have accounts there? Cbrown1023 talk 23:52, 19 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Spam blacklist[edit]

Hi Aphaia - I notice you've been active there recently and that the usual people who deal with the page (& listings) seem to be "absent". Do let me know if I can help at all (I've responded to a few for whom the local blacklist seems appropriate but there are one or two that looks deserving of inclusion on the list?). Thanks & regards --Herby talk thyme 08:45, 19 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

As a meta sysop, you are of course welcome! I think it is nothing but nice if you handle those requests on your discretion. --Aphaia 09:22, 19 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I guess I'm asking what criteria etc there may be - I am happy to be bold but would prefer not to upset folk! For example this to me is evidence of crosswiki spamming (links on meta are pumppump.cn, china-byt.com, recphone.cn, sh-dzbc.cn, tx-bridge.com, officezx.com, vcd-dvd168.com.cn, enrichuk.com & dmseo.cn). Personally I think it unlikely that they are relevant anywhere on foundation projects but I am sensitive to the fact that this affects the whole project. My personal tolerance to spam is zero but again others seem more tolerant than me. Equally would you just add the links or open discussion and should some justification (the link above?) be included? Hopefully I'll learn - thanks --Herby talk thyme 09:58, 19 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Besides the description on that page, I guess there is no written criteria. As for the link you gave me, I agree on that spamming (some washing machine in Chinese), and obviously, cross-spamming. --Aphaia 10:22, 19 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sockpuppet?[edit]

I've reverted this but is this a puppet of a user you blocked before? The editing may be an "attack" on you? --Herby talk thyme 11:49, 19 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Attack for several users, me as well as who are in position of trust on Japanese Wikipedia. It is obvious harrassment in my opinion. --Aphaia 05:18, 20 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

[[Template:Declined]] - it uses the word at the top of the spam page so I borrowed Commons template. Hope you think that is ok? Regards --Herby talk thyme 11:09, 21 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Is it worth looking at a "proper" closed template such as the WQ VfD one that actually encloses the spam request? It might make it clearer and more readable? Even think about transcluding the requests for ease of archiving? Cheers --Herby talk thyme 11:33, 21 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

--Genppy 12:29, 22 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

--Aphaia 14:21, 22 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Would you mind protecting this deletion? I'm not sure what system Meta has set up for this, but if there's not one in place, it might be wise to set up a system like found at n:Wikinews:Protected deletions/auto. Thunderhead 18:19, 22 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Freewebpage blacklisting[edit]

Hi Aphaia - I see you blacklisted this whole site in 2005. Can you take a look at this and comment maybe. Looking at the site it does not look as if it would add value to the Foundation but I could easily be wrong. Cheers --Herby talk thyme 14:42, 25 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimania 2008 London bid.[edit]

Aphaia, you reverted the mmove from unofficial bid to official bid - why was this? What is "the bidding team" you referred to? Otehr bids have been moved to official that just contain the template! Gary KIRK parler! 11:06, 29 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I reverted it because the person who moved the page don't listed himself on the team, and there was no entry to the official bid template, so it was doubtful if they are really going to bid. I prefer not to mix in official bids and unofficial in their nomenclature just for convenience. We are better to avoid any confusion, no? --Aphaia 11:22, 29 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Of course :) the bid is now moving somewhere though, and it's been added to the official bid template. Gary KIRK parler! 11:29, 29 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Can you remember writing about Emperor Uda in 2005?[edit]

Perhaps this colloquy about something you wrote in 2005 will seem amusing. I hope so. One of the interesting things about Wikipedia contributions is that you cannot easily imagine what the consequences will be. Genealogy[edit]

A curiously interesting query cropped up in the English Wikipedia. I responded, and then on a whim, I thought to share the exchange with you because your words from 2005 were involved. This would have been no more than a lark, but your en:User:Aphaia led me into the deep, uncharted waters of Meta-Wiki. And what, one wonders, will you make of this?

Copied from Talk:Emperor Uda
There is something wrong with the text in this paragraph:
"Emperor Uda was the third son of Emperor Kōkō. His mother was Empress Dowager Hanshi, a daughter of Prince Nakano (who was himself a son of Emperor Kamu). by Princess Madarako whose grandfather was Emperor Kammu)."
Note the ".by". I don't understand what is meant so I can't fix it.
ssepp(talk) 14:16, 30 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, you have caught an interesting glitch. My explanation/answer has two parts.
(1) My edit of the pre-existing text incorporates source citations from Jinnō Shōtōki, Gukanshō, and Nihon Ōdai Ichiran. The "extra" words in this revised sentence could have been removed (as I have done with the line-out of the words above), but what appears to be the personal name (the iminia) of Uda's mother caught my attention .... Thanks for helping remind me to revisit this sentence fragment. At first I thought my ear was wanting to hear a missing fricative -- the possible sign of a spelling or romjai/transcription error; but then I had a second thought. Toyotomi Hideyoshi's wife was named Kita-no Mandokoro; ergo, it could well have been that Uda's mother's name was one of those curious similarities which crop up across time. I'd planned to transfer the sentence fragment here to the Talk page, hoping someone else might just happen to know a little bit more. Now -- today -- that belated follow-through is here ....
(2) The second part of your question is implied. You don't understand the word "by" as it has been used here. The original text was posted in 2005:
Emperor Uda [Revision as of 23:53, 1 May 2005] (edit) (undo)

 	+
Emperor Uda (宇多天皇) (877-931) was the 59th imperial ruler of Japan. He reigned from November 7, 887 to July 3, 887. His name in birth was Sadami (定省).
   	+
Uda was the seventh son of the Emperor en:Emperor Koko of Japan by Princess Madarako whose grandfather was the Emperor en:Emperor Kammu of Japan. His father Koko degraded once his sons from the rank of imperial royals to the rank of subjects in purpose of reducing the state expenses and their political influence. Then Sadami was given the clan name of Minamot and named Minamoto no Sadami. Later in en:887 Koko needed to appoint his successor, Sadami was upgraded to the imperial prince rank with support of en:Kampaku (en:region en:regent) en:Fujiwara no Mototsune, since Sadami was adopted to a half-sister of Mototsune.
You might think that there is a certain sense of "lèse majesté" in describing the genealogy of royals with the language used in breeding thoroughbred horses, but it is not at all uncommon nor unusual. The conventional pattern is easy to grasp ... :
[FOAL: filly or colt name] out of [MARE] by [STALLION]
I suspect that this would have been the general intention that Aphaia had in mind, but it seems likely that the precise genesis of something written in 2005 will be forgotten by now. Out of curiosity, I turned to the dictionary to find the word "by" ... and I didn't find an explicit meaning. When I turned to the unabridged Oxford English Dictionary (the OED), I found that the word "by" occupied several pages of small print.
Yes, yours was a good question in several ways; and the response turned out to be altogether more complicated that you might have anticipated.

And so now I've created an account in the heretofore unimagined Meta-Wiki ... and all just because I wanted to be able to sign this message properly. This has taken on a more invigorating spin than I could have guessed. Sometimes a mere whim turns out to be a very good thing. --Ooperhoofd 20:40, 30 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It states "Conference Hall, Alexandria, Egypt" so relevancy is apparent (and the uploader is a member of Alexandria bidding team). Their bidding team page says also their conference hall has an "Internet Cafe" for public use. Also description says the photographer "give up the copyright" ... it may be he or she put it in PD, while we would like the uploader to make it sure in the normal wording. --Aphaia 14:13, 17 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
