I occasionally edit while browsing the web. I am an experienced Wikipedian (LordSuryaofShropshire) who has not edited for some years. I haven't been able to fathom a good reason for your blocking me, which seems unprovoked.--108.54.75.173 08:30, 29 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Wikiversity[edit]

I tried to contact you directly, but I have been unable to.

I am leaving this on your page since you were involved in the original Moulton matters and had some activity at Wikiversity as a steward helping us. I left this note for Jimbo, but I doubt he will read it since he only reads Wikipedia and I cannot post there. I deleted the material 12 days before Jimbo arrived there. I deleted it 44 minutes after it was posted. I deleted it after talking to multiple admin and also consulting with many stewards on the matter. I then warned privatemusings and he did not re-post the material.

I feel that Jimbo's statements and allusions to discussions by the board show that they feel I have not done my duty properly. I do not know what more I could have done to handle the situation. However, if they feel that there is a concern, I would rather them strip my adminship for not doing enough in the situation than to stop Wikiversity as a project. I will not contest such a removal if they do so. Ottava Rima (talk) 14:52, 14 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

MediaWiki:Centralnotice (german)[edit]

Hi Bastique, a few hours ago you modified several CentralNotices. Unfortunately, there's a mistake in the german version. Instead of Wikimania - Stipendien it should be Wikimania-Stipendien. In German, hyphens are used without blank spaces (with exceptions, of course). It's not your fault, as it was in the Version of 2009, too. The german meta-Admins (Church of emacs, DerHexer & Lustiger seth) seem not to be online now, so maybe you can fix this? Bye --Schniggendiller 23:26, 24 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimania scholarship screw up[edit]

I just did something dumb. I submitted a scholarship request and then noticed the exact dates of the conference. My sister is getting married on the 9th, in Alaska. As if that weren't enough, I am preforming the ceremony! Obviously this will preclude my attending, if you could scratch my name off the list that would be great. The main reason I wanted to go is because I think Alaska would be a good host 2012 and I want to put a bid together. Any advice you may have in that department would be welcome. Thanks and sorry for the trouble, Beeblebrox 18:52, 27 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Wiktionary logo vote[edit]

The English Wiktionary is now holding a vote about whether to accept the new logo at wikt:Wiktionary:Votes/2010-02/Accepting the results of the Wiktionary logo vote, which I set up shortly after the logo vote was finished. I did not notice at the time what you had said on the logo vote talk page, that "Any project which is not the tiled will automatically be switched to a localized version of the winning logo.". Did this mean that the result will be enforced by the foundation? There seems to be a substantial opposition to changing the logo on the English Wiktionary, because of lack of participation in the original process. Was the acceptance vote supposed to have been started in the first place? Should it be closed now? --Yair rand 01:54, 4 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I don't believe "unwillingness to participate" constitutes a "lack of participation", as the preponderance of English Wiktionarians were in full awareness that the logo discussion was taking place, and therefore they cannot cite this as a rationale. However, the new logo seems to be just as unpopular as the tile logo, and while the arguments about copyrightability appear unfounded, the new logo is, in reality, no more professional than the previous ones.
On the other hand, as the project never "approved" any logo whatsoever, and the overall vote was in favor of changing the default logo, changing to this logo would seem to be the appropriate outcome for the English Wiktionary and any other projects which have never voted to approve a logo.
A vote to set the original logo as the logo of the English Wiktionary is the only outcome that would dictate otherwise. bastique demandez! 15:25, 5 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
So is the acceptance vote a mistake? Does it not make any difference whether it passes or fails, or is just 50% required for it to pass, or what? Will the logo be placed on all Wiktionaries that don't have consensus against the new logo? --Yair rand 06:06, 7 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
My point is that the English Wiktionary hasn't voted to have the old logo in the first place as its project logo. I see no reason why they shouldn't be subject to a change in the default logo. bastique demandez! 20:56, 7 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The acceptance vote ended with 26 support to 17 oppose (considered 'no consensus' on en.wikt). I must say that I didn't really understand your previous posts, so perhaps you could clarify what happens now? Is there going to be a switch to the new logo, and a call for participation in localizing the logo, or is the process going to stop with no change at all? Thanks for the help. --Yair rand 05:39, 5 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think I explained my position fairly clearly. I can't tell you what happens now, because it's not a process I'm in a position to dictate. The English Wiktionary has never voted to have any logo. The default logo should be changed to the one the overall community voted for. The English Wiktionary should therefore have the default logo. Someone should file a bug to change the default logo. Since it's not something I have time to organize at present, some community member needs to take the initiative. Bastique ☎ call me! 16:33, 5 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
After I uploaded the logo and the bug report was dealt with, the wikt:File:Wiki.png was switched back to the old logo. In your note about the results, you did seem to say that the Wiktionaries using the text logo would have the logos changed automatically. Perhaps you could explain, to the community, when this will happen, if at all?
I don't know what to do at this point. It seems that in creating a vote that wasn't supposed to happen, I may have caused a lot of damage to the process. If you could help with this, it would be much appreciated. Thank you. --Yair rand 05:23, 9 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well, it would seem to me that it was changed back out of process? I can't force the community to do anything, only make the same recommendations I'm making here. Bastique ☎ call me! 20:53, 10 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well, the English Wiktionary is at no consensus on this issue, so any change to the logo by a member of the community risks an edit war. It seems that the cleanest way (if not the only way) to settle this would be if the logo were to be changed as an official act of the foundation, at the same time as the official approval of the logo, copyrighting stuff, and changing the logo shown in foundation material, etc., perhaps also at the same time as changing the logos used in Wiktionaries currently using the English version of the text logo. The Spanish, Norwegian, and Swedish Wiktionaries (and probably more) have voted to switch to the new logo, but haven't yet switched; I think they're probably awaiting some indication that it is time to switch, but as the English Wiktionary hasn't switched, and the foundation hasn't yet given any indication that they're supposed to... --Yair rand 20:24, 12 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimania 2010 scholarships[edit]

Hi Bastique,

I applied for a WM 2010 scholarship today, but there was no slot for entering general comments, and I wanted to make one. I will happen to be in central Europe till the day before the conference, and I have a flight ticket back home to Israel, so my travel costs of relevance to the scholarship are only the change of my flight ticket and some flights inside Central Europe, cheaper than the flights to/from Israel I already booked anyway. [edit]

Hello Bastique,

I am responding to your message about a new Wikipedia logo in vector format. Urdu has traditionally been written in Nastaleeq Font which looks very different than the font that you have chosen. I checked your example svg image, it is only using a rendered path for which we can use any desired font and just convert to path. Any particular reason for choosing KACST Office?

Urdu Wikipedia community would much prefer to create the vector logo using a Nastaleeq font. Examples are Jameel Noori Nastaleeq font and Alvi Nastaleeq font. If desired, I can create the svg file for Urdu. Please let me know.

Kashif Aqeel - Talk

I understand your issue. I have to say that after the changeover happens, nothing will prevent the Urdu project from inserting a more familiar font into the logo. Bear in mind that the official logo in Urdu will be the same font (maybe not KACST Office) as the other projects which use Arabic-Persian script. In order to maintain a unique identity for the mark, elements of the mark have to be similar. The Nastaleeq font, being calligraphic, is a more artistic text style, which is different from the other wordmarks, which are elegant without being particularly artistic. I'm not sure that it's suitable; however, as I said before, once the logos are implemented and the changeover is made, reasonable changes will be tolerated to an extent.
Having said that, I do not think the shading under the text on the current urdu logo is at all appropriate. Bastique ☎ call me! 20:33, 13 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • I agree on the shadow bit. Shadow looks better but makes the logo different than logos on other languages. So I do not see an issue in removing the shadow.
  • Is it a definite requirement to keep all Arabic Script language logos in the same font? If so, can we use Nastaleeq for all of these? I know that historically, all of these languages have used Nastaleeq. The difference is that Nastleeq was the only font used in Urdu whereas it was used along with Naskh in Aarabic and Persian. So the question is, can we use Nastaleeq for all Arabic script languages if all of these logos have to be the same font?

--Kashif Aqeel 15:32, 14 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Please read commons:File talk:Wikipedia in Arabic script languages in KACST Office.svg. There is discussion about a particular font, and your contribution would be welcome. Bastique ☎ call me! 16:13, 14 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Personally I find it strange that someone who is banned on Foundation sites could be a "public speaker" for the Foundation. Maybe you or someone directly concerned with the Foundation would care to look at it. --Herby talk thyme 07:58, 18 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Herby, I tend to agree with you that an individual banned on the Wikimedia Foundation sites is not a suitable individual to be listed as a public speaker for the Foundation. As the Wikimedia Foundation doesn't own that page, it's not something I especially feel comfortable removing myself. Is there really that big a debate as to the merits of the inclusion of someone who has demonstrated an complete inability to say anything but ugly, negative information about the Wikimedia Foundation, its community, or its mission? Chinese character on the new Wikipedian globe[edit]

Hello, Bastique. The Chinese Wikipedian community is conducting a survey on the Chinese character used for the new logo. Some suggest that the character "維", a traditional Chinese character, differs slightly from its simplified form "维", and this traditional character can not represent simplifed Chinese.

Traditional and simplified Chinese shared many common characters (inherited characters), but unfortunately the first character of the Chinese name of Wikipedia (维基百科 in simplifed Chinese or 維基百科 in traditional Chinese) is different in the two writing systems. Is it possible to replace the current character on the globe ("維") by an inherited Chinese character? It would be much better if both simplified and traditional Chinese are represented with the same character on the puzzle globe.

Furthermore, "典", the character representing classical Chinese on the globe must be a mistake. Classical Chinese is writen from right to left, so the first character is also 維 or 维. --MtBell 14:42, 6 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The character on the globe itself will not be changing. There was a very long period (see Wikipedia/Logo) of character selection in which much input was asked from all communities. The character choices have been finalized. Bastique ☎ call me! 21:05, 7 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you any way. The globe is still imperfect even with so many efforts, what a pity. --MtBell 14:19, 8 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Bastique!
Thank you for now. But, it is still not satisfactory. Because there is an important detail. We have
two distinct i-sounds in Zazaki, as follows: and İi. So, if you should write wikipediya with big letters, it must be written as WİKİPEDİYA. I find everything must have its accuracy. I thank you very much for your trouble in advance. --Mirzali 11:10, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

What will it be used for? - it will be internal bookkeeping manual for several users

Has the relevant community, arbcom, or WMF body, that is responsible for the wiki, agreed to its creation? - how do I find that out?

  • What abbreviation (URL) will it have? Discuss with Cary if needed. - LSPB
  • Is it accessible via http:, https:, or both? (Usual config:- always via https: and most times by http:) - both
  • Who can read it? - me and other users that have my permission
  • Who can edit it? - me and other users that have my permission
  • Is account creation by approval only, or by anybody clicking on "create an account"? - by approval only
  • Is email notification to be switched on? (usually yes)- yes
  • Are any special namespaces required? (For example, OTRS Wiki might have a namespace for "Response:" and "Response_talk:") - no
  • Are any custom settings for upload needed - for example is upload disabled, or unusual file types allowed? - usual file types allowed

Hello Bastique. I removed the CU flags you gave yourself at that wiki in 2008 per the CU policy on having 2 CUs on a project or none at all. Nothing personal, of course. I just reviewed the list of people with access and found you were the only one there. Regards, -- Dferg ☎ talk 00:23, 16 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Help getting unblocked[edit]

Bastique, I only just realized I was blocked, and would like to find out about getting unblocked. I was Cheer Writer, and created a page, that I would now like to update. I have consulted with and found out what I did incorrectly, and would like to correct some of the text that I entered incorrectly. Thank you, Sheila

Is it allowed in Wikipedia?[edit]

To keep in the pages of wiki Administrator's personnel thesis? at http://sd.wikipedia.org ? Other problem is We call Computer as same in English, but admin forcibly used his word Ganpukar of Computer. I have proof that thousands of published books called it Computer not Ganpukar. If some one oppose him he started abusive language. That is the reason sd.wikipedia.org never got attraction to Sindhi community. Plz check record there. Other things are he locked CSS due to that on the same site there are lot of font styles appeared there. He is not able to set commonCSS or Monocss. We are in trouble to work in our local Sindhi language. I don't know where to say for this problem. Record history says all the situation there. I appeal plz warn him to follow en.wikipedia.org rules, other wise he will continue use his personnel details and personnel promoted articles there. Dear I am sorry If u r not right person to say all about this, Plz suggest me where I can raise this issue. My sd.wikipedia.org ID is same. His thesis is not a violetion? http://sd.wikipedia.org/wiki/ماحولياتي_انتظام_ڪاڻ_اُپُگِرَهِي_عَڪس_ضماءُ_۽_درجه_بنديءَ_جي_طريقن_جو_اَڀياس

Adminship[edit]

Good day, you promoted me to temporary admin on cr.wiki in January 2010. It was set to expire in August 2010 I think (but haven't been). How can I become a permanent admin (which I'm pretty much already) ? I have launched a discussion on that subject on the main discussion portal of the wiki more than a week ago and there isn't any objection, see [3]. Thanks you, Amqui 17:50, 23 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, I just saw your previous message about your request from removal from stewardship. Anyway, if you see this message, you can help me in the good direction. If not, I hope to talk to you again, Amqui 17:53, 23 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Bureaucrat access[edit]

  • Good afternoon, I apologize for machine translation, but I don't know English. I ask you to pay attention to one situation. I can't acquire the right of the bureaucrat, thus twice that locally the community votes for me [4]. The first time you already participated in discussion [5] . Then me disturbed that accurate criteria aren't present and in fact it turns out that stewards based on the opinion and decide a coma to grant stewards the rights and to whom isn't present. And the community let and not the big can't affect it. Such situation seems to me is inadmissible. So we locally accepted the minimum criteria in need of 10 voices, and it is visible to stewards not enough. But also it isn't clear when will be enough. --SergeyJ (talk) 17:54, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Blocked?[edit]

I've been blocked, apparently in 2010, when I hadn't ever edited Wikipedia. I'm confused - why?

Identity theft[edit]

I don't know if you remember a case , in 2008, I think, where another user robbed me of my identity. You came in as a middleman, and I wrote a mail to you explaining the situation, and suggested a solution. Since then I have swapped computer, so I can't find my copy of the mail any more.

Anyway, I suggested that I would keep the nick Islander in the Scandinavian countries, where he wouldn't be active, and use this identity in my English account, which was the only one where we were likely to clash. I never got any answer from you, but as I since then have been able to continue as Islander, I assumed you had done something for it. A few times the system has tried to log me in as Islander(Scandinavia) also in Finland and Sweden, so I have a redirection note there. Now it seems that a user:Keegan has the mission to go through all the double identities and force another onto them, and I've got a note on my discussion pages on Danish WP and on Commons assigning to me some new temporary nick, that I can't recall, (different on each account). Today the sacking note has appeared on my pages also on Swedish, Norwegian and Finnish accounts.

I wrote on Keegan's discussion side, explaining the old situation, and that I have been less active lately, I have had other matters to tend to, but intend to do more editing when I have more time. It seems that the pirate-Islander has been even less active, so I suggested that I would have back the name Islander also internationally, if it could be arranged. But there were also pages and pages of other concerned wikipedians, on the verge of being issued as "unpersons", so the answer gave the impression to be bot-generated (whereafter he checked the "solved"-box) and I didn't really get any answer to my question, whether It could be possible to have the name back.

Would you have the time to look into this matter? I would really like to continue editing now and then, though I doubt I will write any more complete articles; It has become so difficult, when every sentence is demanded to be verified with at least two footnotes, and all efforts to make the text enjoyable to read is dismissed as fluff or POW, just state dull grey facts. Being stripped of your identity would just rise the treshold still a few steps to grab the keyboard. Best regards Islander(Scandinavia) (talk) 13:57, 24 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Islander(Scandinavia). The SUL unification affects thousands of users and Keegan (WMF) is overloaded handling all the feedback, so cases like yours can easily get lost in the flood. Since Bastique isn't around lately I'll do my best to follow up with you, but note that I'm just another user and can't speak for Keegan or the WMF.
SUL unification is the process of ensuring every user owns their name on all projects — this means only one person can own the 'Islander' name. This will prevent cases like yours in the future, but first all name collisions need to be fixed the hard way: by renaming one of the users. Since the other Islander already owns the global name, you'll automatically lose the local names on all wikis when SUL unification is completed.
If you really want to claim the 'Islander' name, your main recourse is a process called usurpation. Be aware this might be difficult. You'll need to demonstrate that you have a much stronger claim to the name than the other person. Since the other person already owns the global name and has more edits and (currently) owns the oldest unified 'Islander' account, you may need to prove an overwhelmingly strong claim.
The much easier option is to rename your Islander accounts to 'Islander(Scandinavia)' on all wikis, or choose a different name entirely. Note that even if you're renamed, your edits will be reassigned to your new name so you won't lose anything besides the name itself. I'll leave that decision up to you, though.
Let me know if you have any other questions. —Pathoschild 23:17, 24 March 2015 (UTC)
Sorry, been busy with other things again. (You may know that in my age, you are only able to handle one serious matter at the time, which means really, daily... :-) ) I have put some thought into this now, and come to the conclusion that, since it seems impossible to obtain my original identity back, I could go in for to globally use the nick "Real Islander" and settle this once and for all. Please, advise me how to maintain that! Regards Islander(Scandinavia) (talk) 23:08, 14 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

2007 admin rights for Danny B. @ cs.wikt[edit]

Hi, I can see you haven't been very active recently but I have a question for you and it would help us if you could answer it. In 2007 user Danny B. asked for admin rights for cs.wikt. He posted his Request for Adminship here on Meta only 20 minutes after he posted a request for adminship on cs.wikt. You gave him admin rights 3 minutes after he posted his request here on Meta. His rights should have been temporary as you explained in your reply to his request.

Now the question is: Why didn't you add Danny B. into the list of temporary admins if his admin rights were supposed to be temporary? Was it an intent (that his admin rights were actually not intended for 3 months only) or simply an omission? Thanks for reply. --Auvajs (talk) 09:08, 7 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

As an old man (48) I have no specific memory of events 8 years ago other than if I did not add Danny B to the temporary list, it is the fact that he was perfectly capable and trustworthy enough to remain as a permanent admin, which, knowing Danny, I'm sure is the case. If I did not document this somewhere, it is my own failing. If you have an issue with this past action, I suggest you take this cause up with the current steward staff. Perhaps they can retroactively remove my stewardship if they deem necessary or decide to permanently bar me from ever being steward again. Bastique ☎ call me! 15:39, 7 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Danny B. is surely a very skilled "technical" user. He made lots of good work over the years. Noone questions that. But recently he made some mistakes. One of them is he blocked a user for basically no reason. When he was asked to explain it he didn't reply at all. So he was asked to have his adminship confirmed but he ignores it as well. As a matter of fact he ignores most messages on his discussion page so we can't really communicate with him. And now we found out there is also the question whether he has any legitimity to be an admin at all - it seems he should have been a temporary admin, not a permanent one. But we are not sure. What do you think? And is there any way how to force him to have his adminship confirmed? --Auvajs (talk) 20:18, 7 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
