Administrator permissions @ bs.wiktionary[edit]

Hi Bencmq! On 1st of February I requested administrator permissions for myself and KWiki. See earlier discussion here. You pointed out that I should ask the local bureaucrat to perform this task. I contacted him but he has not shown any activity in the past two months. Can you please reconsider this and grant the status if there are no further objections? Thanks in advance. -- Edinwiki (talk) 15:54, 8 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I mentioned that they were active on English Wiktionary (and still so). I left him an email as well as on his talk page. --Bencmq (talk) 07:24, 9 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Didn't notice that. Thanks! -- Edinwiki (talk) 17:41, 9 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Bencmq,

Thank you for your notice at my user page at da:. Byrialbot was only used for interwiki at the Chinese Wikipedia, and it will not be used there any more as interwiki is now managed by Wikidata. So you are welcome to remove the bot flag. Best regards, Byrial (talk) 15:48, 14 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Abshirdheere, to request for adminship, you need to first put up an announcement to so.wikipedia, for example at your village pump. After some time when other members of your community say their opinion, you can put your request at SRP. --Bencmq (talk) 06:42, 15 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Problem login on Chinese Wiki[edit]

Hi, first of all I don't know if this question belongs here (I have searched for a good deal of time but I have found nothing) so I apologize in advance.

Some time ago (3+ years) I created an account (http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usuario:Jarna3) but I wanted to change the name, as I had very few edits, the best option was to create a new account (this one).

Everything went smoothly in every wiki (automatic login) but when I went to the chinese wiki (http://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:%E9%A6%96%E9%A1%B5) I appeared as unlogged and trying to log gives me this message: "Login error <The user name "Jarn333333" has been banned from creation. It matches the following blacklist entry: .*(.)\1{5}.* <newaccountonly>>"

I don't know why the name is banned and taking into account that I have had no problems login into other wikipedias I find it really strange.

Once again, thank you for everything.--Jarn333333 (talk) 00:11, 22 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I have removed that entry. You should be able to log in now, :) --Bencmq (talk) 04:19, 22 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Now it works perfectly, thank you very much. --Jarn333333 (talk) 07:54, 22 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

MS wiki[edit]

Thanks for the action. I just wonder is this is the right page (checkuser) to report vandalism or there are vandal busting page that is more specific. I'm expecting the user/vandal will be back, since the mo is similar to previous attack and waiting for a few days to gather evidents is time consuming. Sorry for asking this here but I was hopping to nip this type of vandalism quicker. If there are, can you please inform me which pages. Yosri (talk) 00:08, 25 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! Would you mind commenting at the above SPI on the English Wikipedia? I've tried looking through the sock pages on zhwiki and I can't figure out what's actually been  Confirmed as Makecat and what has not. I know some of the socks on that page were confirmed as Nipponese Dog Calvero, but I'm also seeing accounts like Ewescares (talk · contribs) that were blocked on the English Wikipedia as vandalism-only, which if they were confirmed would justify a check. --Rschen7754 21:44, 15 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Single User Login finalisation[edit]

Hi!

I recently read this: Single User Login finalisation announcement. Generally I'm very happy about that, but in my case, this may cause some serious problems.

Last year I started to request renaming my old username "Kontos" to "Sanyi4" on every single wiki where I had have an account by then. Unfortunately, I was stupid enough to visit many wikipedias beforehand with both accounts, so accounts have been autocreated on many wikis. Anyway, I started requesting, and on many wikis the renaming has been already done. On the other hand, there are still a lot of wikis where the renaming hasn't been done yet. (see: [1]) Before all that, I requested that the global account for "Kontos" be deleted, so that after renaming on one wiki, the account not to be created automatically again.

According to the page cited above: "we will be renaming a number of these accounts to have “~” and the name of their wiki added to the end of their accounts' name." This means, all of the wikis not yet renamed will be forced to be renamed to a different name (to have a different ending, according to the local wiki). This may heavily encumber my effort to get renamed these wikis.

My question is: Is there any possible way to rename my remaining local accounts with the name "Kontos" to "Sanyi4" in the frame of the Single User Login finalisation?

Sanyi4 (talk) 17:47, 9 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your answer! Let me bother you with some more issues:
On eu:, hr:, lt: and oc: wikipedias I requested username change, but I haven't got any response for months. On la: wikipedia, there is no active burocrat. Could you help me somehow?
You wrote "you should only be concerned about accounts with edits. Those with 0 edits you can just happily leave them behind." The thing is, I concerned about that. Probably for most people this weren't an issue, but it is for me. Firstly, the date of the creation of the accounts on each wiki holds the information when did I visit the wiki the first time - and that is an important informaton for me. Secondly, and that may sound even sillier, I just don't want to leave my old accounts behind "floating" somewhere not "under my supervision". Although I'm getting put up with the idea that I may not succed, I still aim to rename all my old accounts (or as many as it's possible). So I have some questions concerning that problem of mine:
  • Is there any policy that "accounts with no edits must not be renamed!" or something like that?
  • If the forced renamings of the "Single User Login finalisation" are managed globally, why is it necessary in my case to request renaming on every single wiki? The accounts not attached to global users are to be renamed anyway, without local approval (as I know). - is it possible to do the forced renamings not according to the formula (adding the suffix ~xx), but to my new username?
Sanyi4 (talk) 21:55, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much!
I have one more question. How will renaming/merging of local accounts work after the SUL finalisation? If I merge the remaining accounts with my old username in a global account, am I able to merge that whole global account with my other global account with my new username? For example: I have usernames OldName and NewName, which are both global accounts. I have NewName local account on A-wiki, B-wiki and C-wiki, and I have OldName local account on C-wiki, D-wiki and E-wiki - is it possible to remove C-wiki from NewName, and move C-wiki, D-wiki and E-wiki from OldName to NewName?
Sanyi4 (talk) 18:10, 19 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
OK. Thank you one more time! -- Sanyi4 (talk) 11:25, 20 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Morning277[edit]

Hi! The above editor is actually the master account of a large farm of sockpuppets/meatpuppets that represents http://www.wiki-pr.com, a large paid editing firm that has been editing the English Wikipedia for years with at least 1000 accounts. The SPI page is at w:en:Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Morning277, and my notes on the crosswiki editing are at User:Rschen7754/Reports/Morning277.

I am mentioning this because it appears that there are local edits on your home wiki, the Chinese Wikipedia, by either CU-confirmed or behaviorally confirmed accounts, that should be reviewed:

I have been told by the English Wikipedia CheckUsers that doing a CU has not always provided useful information, but if choose to do so and find any related accounts, we would appreciate the information. If you need CU data, User:WilliamH and User:Tiptoety have been working the cases at the English Wikipedia and at Commons, respectively.

Thanks!

Requests_for_new_languages/Wikipedia_Simple_Chinese#Discussion PiRSquared17 (talk) 14:19, 31 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Is this up-to-date? See MediaWiki:Centralnotice-stew2014noms-noms-invitation. Also check the other zh dialects? PiRSquared17 (talk) 02:22, 14 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Is is no longer needed to generate the zh-* variants, some of them are deprecated (zh-classical becomes lzh, but for central notices there is little use of this language, zh-yue becomes yue, zh-min-nan becomes nan which is useful to translate due to the change of script and its unique orthography, but zh-hans is just an alias of zh along, zh-hant is commuted automatically from zh, zh-cn / zh-tw / zh-hk / zh-my / zh-mo / zh-sg are also the same with only selection of the glyph variant forms, and non-language differences such as currency or working days and fests which do not change the translations).
the remaining variants are not selected as languages, they are expose in a varant selector but the default "zh" variant should work immediately for all and will give access to the other forms.
the same should be true for Serbian (Latin or Cyrillic) using automatic transliterator : this works provided that orthography is normalized (the old aliases s-ec, and sr-el are not conforming anyway as they do not refer a script but other unrelated countries Ecuador and some reserved alias for Greece, when the stadard should be sr-latn and sr-cyrl)).
Central notices are intended to be read and understoof by the most, this means that they target the priamary language, or languages that are always understood at least as a necessary companion language of another traditional or regional one. Ir is probably best to concentrate efforts so that these base languages are accurately translated, without having to maintain variants that are never reread or updated to reflect important changes.
If a variant becomes fuzzy, it will no longer be used but many fallbacks are still missing and English will be used instead of the standard base variant of the language.
Variants should be created only if they are maintained and stable: emergency messages sent via Central notices do not qualify.. We still don't have all the needed language fallback mechanisms to handle gracefull use of fallbacks. It's not just the question about the quality or not of these variant translations, but a inner tuning of technical machinery. Wikimedia sites are still not ready to support them properly, except for the content of specific pages (contents of reusable templates or notices do not comply to this condition, and it is even more complex for contents that are shared across wikis that have lots of technical differences).
Things that we should avoid in contexts of central banners are the use of template transclusion that will work only on Meta itself. These templates must be expanded and substituted on the version used to deliver central notices. Central notices have to use contents with basic technical requirements (otherwise they will require complex development of modules to convert these contents on Meta into a deliverable form.
Other tricks are also not usable if they depend on the presence of a MediaWiki extension not supported on all wikis. verdy_p (talk) 04:00, 14 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Do you think you could help fix up these banner messages? I'm busy currently, but I don't think many of the non-WMF admins know much about CentralNotice or translations, except Thehelpfulone. PiRSquared17 (talk) 04:17, 14 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Generally I can detect them only when I will translate them ; translators should participate to testing these, and ideally the central notices should be immediately testable on another wiki such as TestWikipedia. Testing them only on Meta is not enough. verdy_p (talk) 05:37, 14 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Idea: Global Test Wiki[edit]

My opinon is that there should exist a Global Test Wiki aka Glot-Wiki (nterwiki prefix=Glot:, url=//glot.wikimedia.org/ ) for all contents that will be sent globally, and this Glot-Wiki should be immediately during the translation work). Glot-Wiki will be regularly purged (or recreated) and updated to reflect the core MediaWiki version used and the minimal set of extensions that work on all wikis. (it should not have any beta extension, or extensions used only in Wikisource for example). Glot-Wiki should NOT have the Translation extension itself (not as long as all Wikimedia sites have this extension), so Global notices should still be translated and managed on Meta (which should still have more local-specific tools to manage translations).

Glot-Wiki will be completely different from Test Wikipedia Wiki, which is used to beta-test new versions of MediaWiki or new extensions and features during their development. Glot-Wiki should be designed as a monolingual wiki (it can remain in English by default, but could host a "RTL English" locale variant (for testing layout with pseudo-Arabic, and for testing Arabic and Hebrew translations). That "RTL English" variant would work with the language variant selector used for example in Chinese, and it will be used instead of standard English, as the default fallback locale for RTL languages. In any places, GlotWikis can be prefilled with Lorem Ipsum pseudo-text. verdy_p (talk) 04:53, 14 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Could you please just check my work for now? You're more knowledgeable than I am about translations at this point. How can I move all the MediaWiki messages to the CNBanner namespace? BTW, you can already view the banner e.g. [2]. The translations need to be up by Jan 15. We already have testwiki and test2wiki, testwiki:Lorem ipsum.Didn't notice your most recent edit, as we have been edit conflicting. PiRSquared17 (talk) 05:06, 14 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This look OK. It's often hard to tell if central notices will work reliably, only we really know that all target wikis have the minimal set of data. Another possibly name for Glot-Wiki could be "Test0-Wiki" (because its content will be purged and recreated regularly, also because it only contains the core features usable on all wikis in their most basic version). This wiki should however have SUL enabled immediately so that user sandboxes can be temporaly created at any time, and all translators will be able to see the tested messages immediately on that wiki; and central notices tested on this wiki should neer be dismissed (the dismiss feature will not work for notices that are actively being translated or the dismiss cookies should be reset each time a notification version is updated in Meta and the notification sent immediately to Glot/Test0 wiki). The translation management pages for global banners on Meta should propose a link to see the message already delivered early on this wiki, and a button to resend it (if it has been purged on that wiki). ~~ ~~

Let's move these last few replies to your (or my) talk page, as Bencmq is not involved in this (yet). PiRSquared17 (talk) 05:30, 14 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

A separate thread is better for now. But my/your talk page is nor the correct place either to discuss this. We could move it to Wikimedia Forum though... verdy_p (talk) 05:37, 14 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Global CSS/JS migration[edit]

Hello Bencmq. You have a global.js page which contains your global scripts for all wikis. Since August 19th, your global.js and global.css pages are loaded automatically on all wikis (see announcement). Since you already load them yourself on some wikis, you may experience script errors or issues like tools being added twice. I can fix that for you by merging your local scripts and styles into your global pages, and deleting the local pages with synchbot. Do you want me to do that? —Pathoschild 18:16, 20 September 2014 (UTC)

Done for common.js (though you still have a few other *.js pages). You can see the full log on your archive page. :) —Pathoschild 17:12, 09 May 2015 (UTC)

Hovercards translation[edit]

Hi Bencmq,

I found you listed at Category:Translators eng-zho. I was wondering if you might be willing to help translate some or all of User:Quiddity (WMF)/Hovercards trial, or help me find some translators? The feature is going to be turned on for all users (including non-registered) at the Chinese, Greek, and Catalan Wikipedias (per previous discussions at those wikis), hopefully in early-April, and we need to get this documentation ready to go out.

Ping me, if you have any questions or recommendations. Much thanks! Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 19:29, 16 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

someone blocked my ip illegally[edit]

hi Bencmq !

as an admin my IP is blocked by an irresponsible admin Mr Khangul just for the reason i have allowed and unblocked a user who is hard working, keen to develop, contribute in pashto wiki. see this for his countributions: Usman khan's contributions

plz have a look to his work. if you think that he (Usmankhan) deserved to be blocked by Khangul. and for restoring (Usmankhan) was that against the rule of wiki, or i have done something wrong for which Khangul (an admin like me) blocked me from wiki and deleted my pages where i have requested for bureaucrat.

plz take this matter serious and solve the prob which khangul create day by day to new users, and now for admins as well.

you will note that pashto wiki contribution is zero now a day due to khangul's behaviors with users.

best regards

note: my nomination page is also deleted by him. khangul deleted my nomination page for bureaucratship. its against wiki norms and laws.
