Hi. Thanks for fixing the typo on my matrix. :-) Redux 00:05, 12 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry[edit]

Sorry, I didn't mean to vandalize but I am a newbie with this... Could you tell me how it is possible to change the thext of the logo of the Northern Sami Wikipedia? Now it is "Friddja ensyklopediija" but that's not good Sami. "Almmolaš diehtosátnegirji" would be better. --Skuolfi 22:22, 13 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the welcome message,[edit]

I'm probably not as familiar with the procedures here at meta as I would like to be. Can you help me to make sense of this edit? Is the silent removal (no explanation given in summary) of two votes from this page legitimate or is it forgery? --Johannes Rohr 22:33, 13 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

deleting the article on the suppressionist editing philosophy[edit]

Was there anything particularly offensive about my article on the suppressionist editing philosophy, or was it simply judged a waste of space? Thanks! JPatrickBedell 00:07, 11 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It was said of as just a neologism that was created to prove a point and that is it. If you disagree with the speedy deletion, I will nominate it for deletion instead. Cbrown1023 talk 00:08, 11 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

So did I and he deserved imo too ;)
One of our problems is perhaps none of us knows which template exactly we have, and some of them may be under a different name on English project (you could easily understand why). There were several attempts to sort them but it hasn't been completed. --Aphaia 03:17, 11 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Cbrown1023,

Well, I agree that this page is quite poor :) I was going to find out if such pages are really suitable for MediaWiki.org, so it's why I tagged it before asking and deciding what to do with it. I'm also questioning about pages in category Category:Mediawiki Hacks (I noticed some of these have been tagged to move to MediaWiki.org).

I'm inclined to send it to RFD rather than speedy delete it. Cheers, Korg + + 22:27, 26 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You dirty vandal you! :P Majorly (talk) 10:29, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm.... I had reverted that after I did it..... Dunno why that happened. (It was a mistake, btw, accidentally saved on the wrong wiki.) Cbrown1023 talk 13:44, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Interwiki map[edit]

Regarding the pa chapter wiki... If it's an official wikimedia site it should, I think, get a prefix through other means than the interwiki map... meta doesn't have one that way. Probably would have been best to discuss this on the talk page, or with developers, first? you might want to revert your change and do that before it gets propagated. ++Lar: t/c 12:03, 23 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, I did revert it, along with another undiscussed change. Let's talk further. Perhaps it's the right thing to do but I think there is another way to do it. How are other chapters done? ++Lar: t/c 12:14, 23 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think it needs discussion or to be reverted. The only reason that that page is protected (like the www.wikipedia.org ones) is so that only trusted users can fiddle with them, I can add an entry to the spam blacklist without a formal discussion or request, as can you. Brion was the one who set up the website, not one of us individually. The website is official and a part of the Wikimedia circuit, so the only reason it would need to be added by hand is that it wasn't fully set-up yet. I am not yelling at you for reverting me, but fail to see why it would need separate discussion elsewhere. If the other chapters wish to have a wiki-link that does not mess with another project's lang-code, that is fine with me. If need be, we can even ask ChapComm for their opinion on the matter. Cbrown1023 talk 17:42, 23 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Put it back then, but it IS good to document adds. Just because you CAN edit that page without saying anything to anyone doesn't mean that you SHOULD. My point about prefixes is that as an official WMF site, the prefix is typically handled differently than by putting it in the interwiki map. Commons is not in the interwiki map, after all... Hence my suggestion that further investigation is a good idea. If BRION said do it this way though, that would be fine. But also, it would be where documenting what was done and why would be useful, so that other chapters, when they also get sites, know what to do. ++Lar: t/c 21:54, 23 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
They do have sites, that's another one of my points. But Brion seems to always be busy, why don't we try and get this sorted out? Many of the other Chapters have conflicting prefixes. We cannot do a "uk:" for WM-UK because that would clash with the Ukranian Wikipedia. We still should discuss this with ChapComm. And I am very upset that you think I have an "I can so I should" attitude... it's just the fact that we don't need to discuss every little bit. I would trust an addition by you that didn't have any discussion because I trust you. There are some things that need discussion and some that don't, you know that. But I will not, re-add it without discussing it with Delphine first, now that you have reverted me (and, to be frank, brought up some good points). I am sorry for any trouble this has caused you, I still hold you in high respects and am definltey not upset with you for reverting me. Feel free to do that any time, I am serious. Cbrown1023 talk 21:59, 23 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You certainly did not cause me any trouble... and... well, on reflection, I think it was wrong to revert you... it's just that I saw your change mixed right in with Shizao's... I have no doubt he is doing the right thing, but he NEVER documents what the site is about or why or anything... that's not teh same as being wrong, and I shouldn't lump you with him. But, I think we should document what we do whenever possible. That's not a trust thing, it's just being neat and tidy and helping the next bunch that comes along. That said, maybe the chapter prefix issue is something to discuss there on the talk instead of here... what did the other chapters do? Maybe what they did is what should be adopted as a standard? ++Lar: t/c 03:16, 24 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That's exactly what I was planning on asking Delphine next time I saw her (brought up by our little chat). We could possibly even have a "chapter" prefix and then the specific chapters like uk, de, etc., after them. Cbrown1023 talk 14:54, 24 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Good. And once something is hammered out, build it in to the OTHER way that prefixes get created, I say... rather than via interwiki map which is for non WMF sites. A bugzilla bug will go faster/better if you say "the mechanism is this, and it extends to all chapters" I bet. ++Lar: t/c 15:28, 24 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Incuabor[edit]

Hello, It seems that you have deleted the main and the most important page of Latgalian test Wikipedia (http://incubator.wikimedia.org/wiki/Test-wp/bat-ltg). I am not that advanced in Wikipedia's structure to understand how it was possible to make such considerable damage to Latgalian Wikipedia's community without even having the possibility to recover the page from history.

Please help undoing the damage ASAP. Thanks a lot! Stiernīts 19:06, 3 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

(The record in history says: 23:44, 30 July 2007 Cbrown1023 (Talk | contribs) deleted "Test-wp/bat-ltg")

Per the incubator's policy's, that page was moved to incubator:Wp/bat-ltg. Please also put new posts at the bottom of the page in the future. :) Cbrown1023 talk 19:14, 3 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I see, someone created a link to the other page, thereby messing up the bot script. :) It's fixed now. Cbrown1023 talk 19:18, 3 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, thanks, at least the good news is that the main page has not been lost. But since the URL has changed, no links in the main page are valid anymore (i.e. texts are red now, not blue). It is still a big problem. What would you suggest to recover the links? Stiernīts 19:32, 3 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
What are you talking about? All the links I see are blue. The bot also updated all the links. Cbrown1023 talk 19:48, 3 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I just fixed them by replacing manually "Test-" with "..." everywhere in the page source. But please don't shock us аnd put a link to the new URL next time you make changes like this. Numerous links that are placed in other Latgalian websites redirect users to Latgalian Wikipedia, so it's terrible if our community members and other Latgalians do not see any explanations why the page has suddenly become empty оr with inactive links. Thank you. Stiernīts 19:58, 3 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ummm... please put it in the right place next time! :) Feel free to create a redirect on the *main* page (that's it though). Cbrown1023 talk 20:32, 3 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Matrix[edit]

Is there an easy way that you generated your matrix? I'm planning on doing one up for myself at User:EVula/matrix, but with roughly 57 accounts (47 of those being *.wikipedia.org accounts), that could take me a while... EVula // talk // 21:39, 3 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Blast. Oh well, maybe I'll get tired of gnoming the meta pages and start working on the matrix. :) EVula // talk // 00:00, 4 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
lol, yeah! :) You could of course, right a tool for it and put it on the toolserver! :) Cbrown1023 talk 00:44, 4 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Heh, now I feel silly... it was actually a lot easier than I thought it would have been. All I had to do was break it down into chunks of five or ten, and it was pretty manageable. EVula // talk // 03:54, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
See also User:Lar/WikiMatrix ... I use templates for the lines, it seemed to help. I don't have quite as many entries as you do though. The templates I used were two, one for wikis that fit the regular name/language pattern and one for those that do not... ++Lar: t/c 04:05, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
...that's so much easier that it's mildly sickening. :D EVula // talk // 04:28, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Something I noticed while trolling your matrix..[edit]

The interwiki prefix for the Test Wiki is "testwiki". I only mention it because its entry at User:Cbrown1023/matrix is hard-coded and I'm loathe to make actual changes to someone else's matrix (fixing an errant "colspan" value on the table is something else). Plus, it's handy to know (I just found out, after being frustrated that "test:" didn't work). EVula // talk // 16:17, 30 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I just found that out too on RfP, but got sidetracked and forgot to make the change! Thanks for reminding me. :-) Cbrown1023 talk 21:29, 30 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Question about replying[edit]

Hi CBrown. Thanks for the welcome message and your replies about my WikiCurriculum project. I e-mailed you the following question, but perhaps I should have used User talk instead...

Here's a probably stupid question: how do I reply to a thread on foundation-l?!

Looking at the site: [2]

(where I see your message), I cannot find a "reply" button. I'm aware of the resulting problem following threads -- I'm quite new to wiki in general.

Can you give me precise instructions on how to reply, so that I keep threads intact? Is there a format for the subject line of an e-mail that I should use?

Typos on resolutions[edit]

Thanks for fixing your typos. Specially for category mistakes. On the other hand I am not sure if it is necessary or good thing to fix the text or votes itself, since 1) Those are copies from board wiki. "Tweaking" would be no problematic, but may make them not identical from the original. 2) It is my personal opinion - but I am afraid to make a misunderstanding that those pages are something "you can copyedit". It shouldn't. And I am not sure the person who proposed aware that well.

Just for your information, when we removed typos from Bylaws, we had asked the court if it would be okay, since it should be identical with the version the court preserved.

Thank you for your consideration. --Aphaia 23:22, 5 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Blocked[edit]

Hello,

I am somewhat confused on the multi-layers of this site. The site says that I am "blocked". I have no idea the reason.

My IP address is 72.220.164.22, and the block ID is #274122

I am requesting to be UNBLOCKED. Or please advise.

Thank you

Scott

Which site does it seem you are blocked on? If it is this site, you are not blocked (because if you were blocked, you wouldn't be able to edit this page). Cbrown1023 talk 20:11, 17 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Please place this Recent Contributions link where people can find it.[edit]

Thank you for your suggestion. However, the second link (to fundraising.wikimedia) is actually the old website, recent and future donations should go to the donate.wikimedia site. Also, the recent contributions page for donate.wikimedia is linked from the sidebar on that site, is there another place that you suggest placing it? Cbrown1023 talk 19:42, 23 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I suggest that a link to http://donate.wikimedia.org/en/fundcore_browse be placed at http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Fundraising and labeled Recent contributions so the text at the top would read "Fundraising | Appeal from Board Chair | Press Release | FAQ | Donor Privacy Policy | Tax-deductibility of donations | Gift Policy | Planned Spending | Recent contributions". 4.250.198.228 20:04, 24 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Feel free to keep all chat on that page so that others can comment as well. But the link is already there, at the bottom of the page in the ways to make donations. "Public list of donors". Cbrown1023 talk 20:19, 24 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Feel free to move your and my comments to that page. But since you responded here, I will too. OK, I found "Public list of donors" on that page. But it is buried in the middle of a donate box that should contain data and input fields for donating. It belongs at the top. I should not have to read evry word on a page to find a buried navigation link. Please put it in the navigation box at the top. Not for me. I already have access to the link. But think of the others who want to view that data and don't see a navigation link for recent contributions. Also "Recent contributions" is a name that better reflect the content of the linked page than "Public list of donors". 4.250.132.5 14:44, 25 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Misuse of donation comments[edit]

Hi, I was wondering whether comments are filtered or not. I may donate 2c and write there my website URL. Free ads on millions of pages... Ciao, --Elitre 14:37, 4 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yup, that's why there's such a large lag, I'm slow in picking out the good ones. :-) The good ones (i.e. not ads) are bolded on the Fundraising 2007/comments pages (the date ones) and then we add them to MediaWiki:Centralnotice-quotes. j If you know of any quotes that should be removed, please do not hesitate to tell me so I can get it removed. :-) Cbrown1023 talk 14:56, 4 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, thank you. --Elitre 00:17, 5 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
(Is there something I can do, such as striking them? I don't know if you pick them from Dates or Older quotes - i.e. here. I guess links should be totally removed, if our pages are indexed by search engines, "spammers" may achieve visibility anyway.) --Elitre 00:32, 5 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I pick them from the "Dates:" section (if there are some good italian ones in the non-english section, please highlight them too! :-)). It would be great if you wanted to remove pure spam, it's still in the history if we needed it for some reason. Cbrown1023 talk 16:31, 5 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fy translations[edit]

Thank you for your explanation, but what I did was what the guided translation told me to do, as far as I could tell: After you've made the final edits, rename the file and set the status to published. So we now have De jefte fan kennis en Stipeformulier with the status published, just as it said it should be. If that's wrong:

Weird, but her (Aphaia) and I have uploaded both of the items you have translated to the Wikimedia Foundation site.
  1. Can you help us, with user:Aphaia, to get everything where it should be?
  2. Can you check on the wording of that guided translation?

What I meant about Fundraising 2007/Core interface was that I didn't see the elements of that page anywhere else, so I figured they could be for a page that wasn't used as yet.

That page is used to translate the http://donate.wikimedia.org site.

Where wikimedia:Donate and wikimedia:Fundraising FAQ) is concerned: they have this menu bar in English. Once the Frisian versions are in the right spot, will that menu still be in English, and if so, what can we do about that? Aliter 00:16, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think we are going to create a new menu in Frisian, but I am not sure, let's get all of the items up and translated first.

(About selecting quotes: The ones that spell "Wiki(p/m)edia" in full and correctly, are probably a wiser choice than those speaking of "Wiki" or simply mistyping the names. Aliter)

Thank you for your translations. Cbrown1023 talk 00:58, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

-- I don't know what to count, so I don't know if it's supposed to be two:

So, what else is needed? Thanks for your help, Aliter 01:27, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You forgot De jefte fan kennis to wikimedia:De jefte fan kennis. I don't know what happens for the Fundraising 2007/Core interface and Stipeformulier, but Fundraising 2007/Text for sitenotice can be updated by any meta-admin if it hasn't already. Cbrown1023 talk 01:32, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fundraising 2007/Text for sitenotice has indeed put to use, except that it now says: "the centralnotice-meter is missing!" Where the moving to wikimedia is concerned: The only reason I mentioned that for Fûnswinnen - Fragen en antwurden, was because the guide translation says to rename to target language so a complete list of translated pages will be visible in the relevant translation category; moving a page rather than copying goes against that, so I guess it ought to be undone eventually.

Well, it appears we've done all we could for now. Thanks for your help. I hope to pay it forward sometime. Aliter 17:47, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You have already payed it forward by helping out with translations! :-) Cbrown1023 talk 21:15, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Please update the "You can Help Wikipedia" notice for the latin wikipedia. The current translation is ungrammatical. OTRS wiki[edit]

Regarding this diff [4] ... I am not sure that works, I followed the link in the template {{Moved to OTRS wiki}} and it gives me a "you must login to read this page" message. Is that the desired outcome? Also, where do I learn more about the wiki, I have OTRS access and perhaps I should secure an ID there? Thanks. ++Lar: t/c 20:22, 23 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, that is the desired outcome. All of the OTRS pages have been move to a non-public wiki used to compliment the OTRS work. I have asked Cary to comment here about an account for you. Cbrown1023 talk 20:23, 23 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Answering via email :) Cary Bass demandez 20:26, 23 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Since OTRS is not public, does it violate GFDL to "move" a page there? Should it be a "fork" rather than a "move"? Hillgentleman 00:02, 24 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

How could it violate the GFDL if it is being moved to a non-public wiki? Furthermore, the pages are imported there, so the full histories are intact. I see no reason why this would violate the GFDL. Cbrown1023 talk 00:09, 24 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • "How could it violate GFDL?" - From the GFDL Preamble, "...to assure everyone the effective freedom to copy and redistribute it, with or without modifying it, either commercially or noncommercially......that derivative works of the document must themselves be free in the same sense." And a private wiki is not free in any sense I can think of. :-)
  • I mostly question the use of the word "move", which hints that the original page is no longer useful and may even be proposed to be deleted in the future. That is why I suggest the word "fork". :-) Hillgentleman 00:14, 24 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
There is nothing the GFDL that says you need to re-publish a derived work. You can take a GFDL document, change it and show it only to your buddies. The difference is one between copyright and access control. 154.5.239.108 00:32, 24 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Then I must ask what means "that derivative works of the document must themselves be free in the same sense". Thanks. Hillgentleman 00:36, 24 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The template is only placed on pages that are not needed to be used by people other than those who work on OTRS. If it were some big secret, we would just delete the pages. There is nothing about the GFDL license that states that someone needs to distribute information to anyone and everyone if they are going to reuse it, to suggest something is a litlte obusrd. Something along these lines is currently done already: Meta:MetaProject to transfer content to MediaWiki.org. I do not understand why you are making such a big deal about this, the only one that we are unsure about is in the mainspace and we discussed it and decided that it's best changed as you have done. If you have any problems with specific pages that I have marked with {{Moved to OTRS wiki}} (and not noted as being mirrored on OTRS wiki), please bring up the individual pages here. Cbrown1023 talk 00:56, 24 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I have not formed any opinions. I am simply asking questions on issues that I want to understand. I am certainly not making a big deal out of anything. And I do not think you have anything to hide. I simply do not want to take for granted that those pages are needed only by OTRS. I would not assume what others should or should not need. I have not found your answers satisfactory, but thank you very much. :-) Hillgentleman 01:01, 24 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Idea of OTRS wiki is OK - but we use templates for other things as well and it is linked from Wikipedia - therefore I just made a copy of it in my subpage. I can't see any reason to keep it secret... After all you use it for sending it to the people from general public, so why keep it secret? Polimerek 12:27, 25 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It's not keeping it secret... and I would rather explain yet again why not. :-) But the updated templates will always be kept on OTRS wiki, that is where the admins will update them from. Cbrown1023 talk 16:57, 25 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Translation requests/WMF/Dewan Pengawas[edit]

Sorry for taking long :) I've changed the translation status for id to 'finished' after a quick read a while. Thanks. ~Rex••talk•• 03:02, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's okay. Thanks, I've published it. :-) Cbrown1023 talk 03:19, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Orientation[edit]

Hi CB. Just comparing |the differences. You can see I'm no expert on wikistuff so excuse any naughties. The main thing I have picked up over the years is the the problem people have with getting orientated. I hadn't realized one needs a new account for every Wikimedia domain until getting stuck into things.

1, That's why i think this para is important.

One of the problems for all of us, as you probably know, is with having so many User accounts. So please make sure you list as many as you think are useful, preferably on your meta User account. like CB has. (And you think you're busy!) Anyone (newly) coming to the CPG page will likely to be arriving because its linked off the meta.wikimedia front page. It's likely they will be trying to find ways to communicate across projects. They will have multiple user accounts and, unlike yu, may not have seen the need for the meta user account to be used as a way of centralizing things, and talking from the one page.

2 With the proposal system going through a restructuring = no clear way to make a prop and find peers who will support it, and then 'plug' it into the 'mainstream'; or else discovering that there is no one who see its need and so burying it = we have this down time to (at least) reconsider new comms tools that are more user friendly and practical. It seems Wikimedia is guilty, like most software developers, of attempting to make a screw driver out of a hammer.

You've seen I've suggested on the group's talk page that it's a collaboratory. This means testing (comms) tools in a systematic manner until we find one that complements wiki library builders. Skypecast is the first, and one size won't fit all. Enough. Have a good break and we'll look at this in the new year. --Simonfj 00:31, 23 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The reason I changed most of it is because it would probably need more discussion to reflect something on our "main page" and that used "we" (implying consensus). Perhaps you could bring this up on the mailing list or at one of our meetings? Cbrown1023 talk 03:35, 23 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

One pedantry note. You can't have interest ON something. One can only have interest IN something.

Yes. :-) But I changed the part that said put it ON the specific page. Cbrown1023 talk 03:35, 23 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. Fixed interwiki links; They should be project independend. See m:wikt:yi:template talk:anchor. I modified the « autocomment » section links manualy. This is why these links should redirect you to the proper section at {{fullurl:{{FULLPAGENAME}}|action=history}}. Best regards

proper RTL pages at wmf:[edit]

Dear Cbrown1023; I have no clue how the wiki source code for the RTL pages wmf: is. I assume that one should observe the following rules:

  1. every page and every included subpage / template should start with a <div dir="rtl" > and end with a </div >
  2. if you are embeding LTR text you should use the following syntax for template:style/lir: {{style/lir|dir=rtl|lir=foo bar}}; avoid « | » inside the « lir » parameter. If you need to use « | » escape them with <nowiki>|</nowiki>
  3. If you need to include a LTR sentence it is best to both start and it with &lrm; .

These are basic things. Just ask if you experience other issues. Best regards
