Admin[edit]

Well there was some fancy template lying around but I can't find it for now! So - you are an admin. You know what to do anyway, go add yourself to the list etc etc, ask if you are not sure :) If I forgot anything sorry & I'll try and get to it later!! Cheers --Herby talk thyme 10:13, 6 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Congratulations, Dear Administrator![edit]

An offering for our new administrator from your comrades... (our budget is smaller than Commons)

Cometstyles/Archive, congratulations! You now have the rights of administrator on Meta. Please take a moment to read the Meta:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Meta:Requests for help from a sysop or bureaucrat, and Meta:Requests_for_deletion, but also Talk:Spam_blacklist and Talk:Interwiki_map), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings, or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care.

A tip: add this page Meta:Administrators' discussion index to your watchlist, it tracks the latest activity to various sections of many of the important pages.

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-admin @ irc.freenode.net. You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading although it doesn't always completely apply here at Meta.

Please also check or add your entry to Meta:Administrators#List_of_administrators and the Template:List of administrators.

LanguageJA.php[edit]

Could you please give a look to December 2007 VFD log and its deletion history, and make it sure if it is really "forgotten"? Thanks. --Aphaia 21:17, 6 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

sorry, I looked through the archive twice and didn't see it. its in a mess.. and yeah restored.. sorry again..cheers...--Cometstyles 21:27, 6 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. I didn't restored it myself since I thought it as a fair assumption to take it as "forgotton". It may be really forgotten, but we cannot say without Tim. --Aphaia 21:30, 6 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Small wiki vandal-correcting[edit]

Hi. I'm an admin on Simple English Wikiquote. I heard that there's a group of people who are cooperatively helping with correcting vandalism on many small wikis. You may want to change the page User:Cometstyles/Matrix from Category:Wikimedian matrices to [[Category:Wikimedian matrices|{{PAGENAME}}]] so it sorts right in the category. We did a consultation in Village pump of az-wiki. Uannis, Aruz, AMD and Vusal1981 wanted delete unusual and no information articals. Only Bakı66 didn't want it. But sysops of az-wiki didn't delete anyone. Then One of sysops is Memty. Memty deleted 3.000 unusual and no information articals. Memty also supported this consultation. We have got a bureaucrat in az-wiki but he isn't active in az-wiki and he isn't interested in az-wiki. I want to delete these pages in az-wiki. They are just template. Hey, just wanted to reiterate that I understood the message on my talk page from Shanel and stopped welcoming anon-IPs immediately after receiving that message. I also further appreciated Shanel's clarification about the tendency of some users to make one-time edits to Meta. But if I check a user's activity, see that they are a registered user that has edited Meta on multiple times relatively recently and in a positive fashion - isn't it appropriate to welcome that person? I will hold off on doing so until I hear back. Cirt 07:39, 18 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

RfA closing[edit]

To be honest, I don't see any major problems with this. The top of WM:RFA says "Bureaucrats should close only after the closing time, unless the consensus is clear and they did not vote." I felt this was an example of said situation. Nishkid64 (talk) 02:33, 20 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

it would have been Ok if it was the only RfA and the first in Line but sadly there is another RfA from before it, we already had discussion on this earlier and maybe closing within 24 hours is ok but 33 hours earlier, I would disagree with it and since we should give time to others to vote on this RfA as well...--Cometstyles 02:37, 20 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Point taken. I'll hold back in the future closings. Guess I was a bit excited to finally make use of the bureaucrat tool. Nishkid64 (talk) 02:39, 20 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The spam page you deleted..... Took a look around, found a few one off accounts doing the same thing. BL'd the site & blocked a few accounts on en wp. Decided to block the user whose page you deleted & (given the cross wiki nature) decided to poke into my "other" tool. You'll see there is an IP & another user blocked - take a stab at the math - 2+2=....:) I could be wrong but the accounts were created looking pretty similar. At least there is some info in case anyone is interested. Cheers --Herby talk thyme 12:42, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe the bots have found out about Global blocking and have started creating accounts O_O, if so we might have a new problem to deal with ..ouch !!..--Cometstyles 12:45, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oh nice thought :( Probably could do with looking at global CU or similar. I've always looked on it as primarily a vandal/disruption tool rather than anything to do with puppets - I've mailed the CU list with the info anyway. Cheers --Herby talk thyme 12:50, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fiji Hindi Wikipedia[edit]

Hi

We have finally got the Fiji Hindi Wikipedia going. Thanks for your support. Could you please provide help with the following:

1. Do the users from the test project have to recreate their accounts in the new Wikipedia? Aren't the users also moved wit the Wikipedia?
2. I have been a test administrator in the test project. Can I continue with this role in the new Wikipedia. If not what is the procedure for choosing an administrator?
3. At present when a link is provided to Fiji Hindi Wikipedia from a page in another Wikipedia by (for example) hif:Fiji then "Fiji Hindi/फ़ीजी हिन्दी" is displayed. Since the Wikipedia is in Latin script only we prefer that only "Fiji Hindi" be displayed. Is this possible?

Girmitya 01:36, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

1.Actually you might have to recreate an account there if you have not already merged your accounts yet
2.You can request it on adminship access here, and I actually believe you will be an excellent admin.
3. I believe thats a MediaWiki setting, I can ask a few devs to change that soon :)...--Cometstyles 01:51, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Actually No. 3 above has been done. Thanks for your help. Girmitya 13:33, 31 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Cometstyles,

Maybe this page should have been userfied to User:Wikitikitwo? If you don't disagree, I could fix that (I would also remove the warning tag), unless you prefer to do it yourself. Best regards, Korg 17:55, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Some questions[edit]

Hi, Cometstyles. You requested this and I have some questions about it. I am aware they may be too many, sorry if it is so. I should have asked some of these questions to VasilievVV first, but after this comment to me both him and Pathoschild seem to have either forgot about me or ignored me for some reason I do not know. If you are answering any or all of my questions and if you are going to do it in your talk page I would appreciate if you could you copy and paste this whole section in my talk page too. Alternatively, could you please leave me a short message letting me know you answered me? Thanks.

My questions are:

  1. Why did you ask for closing so many projects in bulk?
    • .
  2. Did you check the status of every one of those projects shortly before requesting its closure?
    • .
  3. Why are no notices in the main pages of most (maybe all? I have just checked more than half of them but not all) projects warning about the proposal of closure of their project?
    • .
  4. Do you know how many of the projects closed at once in the 13967-bug occassion will be transferred to the Incubator?
    • .
  5. Do you know when they will be transferred to the Incubator?
    • .
  6. Why are no links to the Incubator in the main pages of most (maybe all? I have just checked more than half of them but not all) projects to be transferred to the Incubator?
    • .
  7. Will there be links to the Incubator on the main pages of the closed projects once their contents are transferred? (Would not that mean to have to remove the closure momentarily to leave the message? Seemingly Bugzilla is currently quite busy for such things. Would not it have been easier, faster and more convenient to have done it before the request of closure in Bugzila?)
    • .
  8. iu.wikt got locked even though I was working in it. I have been blocked out from iu.wikt for more than two weeks now. Spacebirdy requested to unblock it in bugzilla:13967 on 28th last month but no answer or action has been provided yet. Do you know how long could it take a reply from Bugzilla? Could you help with it?
    • .
  9. I would like to contact JeLuf but I would like to use e-mail only as last resort and I have failed to find a user under that name in Meta, en.wiki and a few other main Wikimedia places I looked in. Do you know if he/she is registered in any Wikimedia projects?
    • .
  10. Do you know if more in bulk closure of projects requests are going to take place again in the future?
    • .

I am not sure these are all my questions yet, but probably they are more than enough by now. Thanks for your time. Regards. --Piolinfax (@es.wikt) 15:46, 7 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Given the fact that the unblocking of iu.wikt took place shortly after I left the message above, I assume you helped with it. Thank you. The site was restored without the SUL, though -Piolinfax (@es.wikt) 13:33, 18 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

lbwiki[edit]

Stop deleting my help yells hera and elsewhere, I just want assisantace from a steward or develeoper to block bureaucreat from lb wiki Cornichonng who deletes hundreds of pictures for no apparent reasons. Apparently he uploaded them all himself, but the licence does nit give him the right to delete them also, so why is he doing this, starting at night in Europe when nobody at lb wiki can check him,?

Block lb User Cornischong, he misuses hus buerocrat powers to delete all our pictures, thuis is against law!

It will be taken care of by the Stewards...--Cometstyles 03:25, 9 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wait a minute![edit]

Comet, you've removed an "attack", but all it was was a QUOTE of text from Durova's attack blog, merely replacing my name with Vasiliev's name. But Durova's attack blog is promoted here, while my mere comment gets reverted? How is that logically sound? - Thekohser 13:24, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A better method is to e-mail them your grievances and not to add to to their talk page since it fails our Inclusion policy and can be deemed as an attack..you have been around for a very long, you would know how easy it is to misinterpret something  :)..--Cometstyles 13:31, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Global sysops[edit]

We would like you to comment on your revert ([1]) because there are individuals who expressed their opinion to change from "at least 50 edits on at least two projects (per project) during the last month" to "at least 50 edits on at least two projects (per project) during the last 2 months" OhanaUnitedTalk page 02:28, 15 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I only reverted it because it was a major change and making major changes has to be in the hands of the stewards, since they are the ones that will implement it and create the policy/guideline ...--Cometstyles 04:00, 15 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No, changes are discussed by the people involved in the discussion. Not necessarily stewards. :-) They'll just implement it, like you said, but they "don't decide" things... communities do. Cbrown1023 talk 23:18, 15 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Rename & delete[edit]

Sorry i screwed up, with my slip of the keyboard that dropped the "User:" when i created that template, and thanks for remedying it. But your summary

(Test, please use the sandbox)

on the deletion had the effect of implying the content (not the invisible deleted Rdr) had been deleted, leading me to scramble thru my browser tabs, scavangeing what i hoped were the most recent edit windows from the previous pages in order to get HD copies offline lest you delete the whole suite faster than i could back it up: i became aware of (what turned out to be) the move, only when i got around to looking at my watchlist, as opposed to automatically getting an edit window with the deletion log entry, when i tried to view the page.
While of course the needs of m: will be different from those of en:, it's probably wise for admins here to give themselves the benefit of familiarity with en: admin guidelines, and ignore the en: advice selectively rather than wholesale. Specifically, i think i would have found the guidance of en:WP:CSD#R2 pertinent, had i been in your position.
The substance of the comment is also off-target: editors are likely to wish they could test templates in the main namespace, since some templates use magic words that have different values depending on the namespace of the page that calls them; the en:Sandbox serves that need, but the Meta sandbox cannot, bcz it is a Rdr into the Meta: namespace. More likely, they will lust after the Template namespace (whence the template sandboxes en:Template:X1 thru en:Template:X8). But the top matter on each of those page -- only briefly removable due to bot intervention -- often makes them impractical, if not literally useless, in testing templates called by other under-development templates. So testing on user subpages (in the case of anything that can't be tested without saving it as a MW page) is an alternative worth mentioning for any page that includes a variable name in its content.
All that being said, thanks for admin-ing here; the work you're doing is important.

Those ... SUL accounts[edit]

Hi. I saw you the other day hiding and locking the SUL accounts with those nasty names. They’re hidden on Special:Globalusers, but not on ca.php. Do a search on ca.php on 14202 and 14277 for instance. Someone’s got too much free time on their hands. :) I guess a solution would be deleting the global accounts? — H92 (t · c · no) 10:37, 27 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

no, deleting it would mean that it can be recreated, not really a good idea, and till the abuse filter extension gets enabled, this is the best solution...--Cometstyles 10:43, 27 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Aha, I didn’t think of that. — H92 (t · c · no) 13:29, 27 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Also, regarding SUL, I'm not sure this lock was a good one. In view of the overwhelming result suggesting that meta 'crats not work SUL issues perhaps you should consider not working in this area quite as much? Please know that I realise you do a lot of good work but this matter is of some concern. ++Lar: t/c 12:15, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks a lot for you view, which really doesn't matter much to me, I was actually following what that user was doing and I picked up on a trend which was why I locked him, he was adding links to his personal website on all his userpages and you probably don't know much about spamming links since when Ip's do it, its frowned upon and blocked on all wikis but when a registered account does it, its OK? , and yes that user has made good edits as well but it was either stopping him from continuing or see him do it on all wikis, I was doing what a SWMT member is supposed to do and as I mentioned before, until we have a good cross-wiki policy to stop spammers and spambots alike and until Global blocking gets enabled for stewards, there is not much option, that is probably the only account which I locked that has been unlocked by someone from the 300 I have locked so far and no complains till now, I wouldn't really need to do this if stewards can be more active rather than complain all the time...--Cometstyles 12:51, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Please don't fight here. That one specific lock was wrong, the other locks are very good. Please note that users who are locked can't explain themselves, can't complain to the locking user, might have no idea what happened to their accounts... It should be only used for very, very obvious vandals. (who complains all the time, please don't take things personal :( ).
Best regards to You both, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 13:13, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think I've made at least one bad judgement in my wiki editing :) Spam needs controlling & many users try and get around it by using there user page (I probably delete at least one a day on Commons). There are some 'crats that should not be 'crats - Comets is not one of them. The more people actually do some work the more the opportunity to get something wrong.
With birdy - be nice to the workers (all of them) please. --Herby talk thyme 13:27, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry that you feel my view "really doesn't matter much" to you. I know you are a hard worker and do a lot of good work, and your view matters a lot to me... I just don't think that was a good way to resolve that issue. I'm hopeful that other tools will be made available. Per Birdy, that is a very powerful tool. Perhaps if we all always made sure to leave notes on what we suspect the primary account's talk page is that there was a lock placed? And give some sort of hint as to how to petition for its removal, ala the en-unblock-l mailing list or something? ++Lar: t/c 13:56, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
If you haven't seen his cross-wiki edits yet, you should, it was flooding the SWMT channel as a blacklisted user and when I saw what it was doing, I locked it "temporarily" so that it would stop...people can easily get away with spamming if they do it on their userpage..and quite recently we had a problem on enwikiquote of user creating userpages and adding quotes and pictures in a similar fashion, and as I have previously experienced similar forms of spamming before and since at that time, there was no stewards available on IRC (which is suppose to be the fastest way to deal with such spam vandals), I had to lock it myself, the only mistake I might have made was not to tell the person that there account was locked..he added the same spam in different languages also adding babel templates that he is proficient in over 10 languages and as you can see, he reverted my edits soon after he was unlocked and also wondered what happened, and as I said before, it was temporary, since there was no other option and I hope through meta we can try to improve on what is and what isn't allowed on userspaces for all wikis since spam blacklisting isn't always the right option..--Cometstyles 14:22, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Um, Comet? I think those endorses are supposed to be limited to stewards: Stewards will review the request. The request will be approved if at least three stewards endorse it and there are no objections after three days. If there is steward opposition, the discussion will require at least one week and 75% steward approval. Non-steward users are welcome to discuss as well, though stewards will make the final decision. Porque minha página foi deletada? Transcrevi um ensaio de Ralph Waldo Emerson que não consta na internet completo, em português, e, o publiquei para que todos pudessem compartilhar de tal informação; infelizmente não tenho cópia em meu computador!

I'm asking why was my page delected because the text was very special and unfortunately I haven't a copy. I made a search in google and there isn't a complete text from Ralph Waldo Emerson by this essay in Portuguese so I typed it all from an old book just to share it. If its possible to enable this again, please do it! Or indicate the right place where a can find it because I've not found this. If the ediction is not in the right place, I'll replace that to my blog, but I need to copy this; it is too long text. Thanks.

Rudget[edit]

Dear Cometstyles, re your post about Rudget: surely your accusation is based on a misunderstanding. Rudget may have said that his cousin was "from Ireland"; but there's nothing stopping someone who originated from Ireland, or even someone who normally still lives in Ireland, from visiting the home where their cousin lives for a few hours or days. Rudget indicated that he had left his computer with his account logged in, and that his cousin, who was present at that time in the same home, accessed his account.

Normally when the account of a respected Wikipedian begins doing wild things and then posts a statement that the account has been compromised, we assume that the account has been compromised. I've seen no evidence that anything other than that happened in this case.

For a very active contributor who evidently loves Wikipedia to leave for over a week in January and nearly a week again this month, and this time to display a prominent link on his userpage to the accusation of lying, is not the behaviour I would expect from a liar. It's behaviour that's natural for an honest person who feels intensely impugned and humiliated by an accusation of lying and who hates to leave but feels he must under those circumstances.

Liars, and many honest people, would not tend to make that much of a fuss about an accusation of lying, but to some people such an accusation is simply intolerable: one of the worst sorts of insults.

We don't realize it until it's gone, but we need that foundation of a basic level of trust in order to feel respected, treated as an equal, accepted as a member of a community. Without it, we feel insulted, degraded, and dehumanized, and every minor interaction with others becomes repugnant.

I'm not writing this over a concern about whether Rudget gains OTRS status or not. I'm concerned about something far more important: Rudget's honour. Coppertwig 01:39, 12 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The problem was not that his cousin had used his account but the problem was that he had only been an admin for a week and his account gets "hacked" which really created a lot of commotion on the wiki and IRC and instead of saying that his cousin had done that he claimed it was hacked and I can't show you the edit made because it has been deleted weirdly and saying that "Rudget has had a bad accident and was critical in hospital" or something along that line and an admin account getting hacked is a serious thing but more serious is an OTRS account getting hacked which means the hacker can get personal info on other OTRS volunteers and we recently had incidence of people outing long standing editors and admins which has also caused many editors to leave the projects, many good editors i.e and the first thing I remembered was when he placed the request was that incident regarding his accounting getting so-called hacked and as per my comment, he never told the CU the account of his "cousin" so that the Cu can check and see if his story is true of falsified by probably CU'ing the cousins account to see if she/he is from Ireland and then probably messaging the cousin and asking him to confess to what he/she did and that would have saved Rudget from the humiliation but he didn't tell the CU his cousins account which is the reason why I disagreed with his inclusion into the OTRS..--Cometstyles 03:18, 12 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, Cometstyles. As I said, I'm not trying to change your mind about including Rudget in the OTRS. My concern is that you've stated that Rudget "lied". I firmly believe that Rudget was not lying; I've seen nothing to indicate that he was. I think many people would first presume that their account had been "hacked" if they suddenly see entries in their contribution history that they didn't write. When Rudget discovered what had happened, he couldn't provide his cousin's account name, because his cousin wouldn't give it to him; he had no way of finding it out. Again, I'm not trying to change your mind about the OTRS, but questioning the attribution of misbehaviour to an editor in the absence of clear evidence of misbehaviour. When his track record suggests otherwise, I believe we should extend more faith than that.
Perhaps to some people, an accusation of lying is a relatively mild thing such as is often thrown around on Wikipedia, but clearly to Rudget it's a big deal. I would appreciate it if you would consider acknowledging here that you may have mischaracterized Rudget's claim as deceptive. Again, this is not about OTRS: this is about affording Rudget the basic level of respect due to ordinary editors. Thanks again for listening to my concerns. Coppertwig 00:18, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Lying and not telling the truth are 2 different things, that's why i wrote "lied" in quotations, not signifying it was a lie but that he wasn't really telling us the true side of the story and believe me if I was an admin and my cousin did something like this to my account on my computer, I would take him to task and beat him up to prove my innocence, Rudget did neither and because I believe accounts getting hacked is a serious thing and Rudget took this very lightly and instead of trying to fix his mess, he blames me for his departure which is really a bit immature and thus i stand by my comment..--Cometstyles 00:30, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not immature because of the nature of your comment, its what it represents. Clearly with such an outspoken opinion as that, I don't believe you are the 'only one' to believe such nonsense. I've tried strenuously to overcome that incident but with seven months of 'normal' editing, it's clear to me that with any length of time there wouldn't be any period which could be specified as a length suitable to mitigate this blip, instead its viewed as a permanent tarnish on an otherwise impeccable record (unless evidence can be found to the contrary). I was severly dismayed, outraged when I first saw that comment; but now (?), I think what is the point? Clearly there is no single factor in me staying on because more will always be expected of me because of something that was (could be argued) out of my hands. I do accept that you don't believe my story; its up to you whether its significance is something that precludes even those with records that are expected of an administrator on the English Wikipedia. Rudget (talk) 12:21, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Is there no response to this? Rudget (talk) 13:10, 17 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You can't even reply. I'm disgusted with your attitude toward others here, and dismayed you hold such low integrity. Final posting. Rudget (talk) 10:54, 21 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
What's there to reply to, you made your feeling known and I respect that but as I mentioned before, its not "what you did", but its how you dealt with that situation. You didn't show remorse for your actions, you didn't try to prove your innocence at all, you just hoped people will believe your story (not saying that it was false) and you took the incident so lightly is the reason I believe you didn't belong in the OTRS as well. I'm not being judgemental, just pre-cautious since OTRS deals with highly confidential stuff and for someone who didn't care much about his account getting "hacked", and using me as an excuse for leaving wikipedia really doesn't help your case either. One thing most people know about me is that I appreciate active, hard-working editors and admins alike and I'm not a big fan of laid back editors especially admins, and from my POV, you were a very useful, hard-working and active admin on wikipedia, but your premature departure related to something not even related to enwiki shows you are not even interested in the project as a whole, you do pass all the criteria needed for an OTRS volunteer but I don't think you will be able to fulfil the second clause of this requirement but as you have no desire of staying and proving your worth, then its not in my place to stop you..--Cometstyles 11:17, 21 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Deciding not to use violence doesn't necessarily mean one is taking something lightly. Coppertwig 21:51, 27 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Your own opinion about the image being "intimidating" is irrelevant if you can't discuss your changes. The image has been used since the template was created,so removal of the image must be discussed. XxJoshuaxX 23:38, 9 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No it hasn't. It's been missing from that template since 15 November 2007. I think you should discuss your changes. Pathoschild's version never got reverted. Majorly 23:50, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
The template had the image when it was created on June 10,2007. The removal of the icon on November 15,2007 was never discussed. yes no connection was made to YOU, but a CU reveals all sorts of information and probably those accounts were connected to another user on that wiki and thus the blocks...--Cometstyles 10:01, 18 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, that CU explicitely stated that "there were no connections among the accounts": this means that each account is a person. How many of them has wikipedia lost due to these blocks? People have peculiar reaction to any kind of things; in particular injust suspicion can bless sensible persons. Also, the accusation to me of having vandalised the Italian wiki, or even meta, puts me in a state of profound sadness. And this does not seem to have been done in completely good faith. Sad. That's a pity.

I reproduce here, for your ease, the CU results:

Meatpuppets[edit]

Hello, thank you for your comment. You can be sure there're no meatpuppets of any kind this time. There're people collaborating to develop a project who have been arbitrarily blocked. Thanks. Bests, --10caart 08:12, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Protect Userpage[edit]

Please, protect my userpage [edit=autoconfirmed][move=sysop]. Reason: serial vandalism. Ferrer 23:30, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Rangeblock[edit]

Think you maybe should run that one past the community. There are quite a lot of valid users on that range on Meta. It may well be that new user will need to create accounts over that period. I think /16 is probably a bit big (and/or the period). Cheers --Herby talk thyme 12:19, 25 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

well look at the trend in the Global block..looking at those I was thinking about a 189.81.0.0/17 but some of those ips were in the upper 189.81.127.* range so this was the only option, this has been happening for months now and the stewards are unwilling to do a global range block but on meta, we could stop them to some extent with this block. I only blocked ips editing and not account creation (softblock) so they should create accounts and if not request IP Block exempt on meta ..--Cometstyles 12:28, 25 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

the Akashic memory of Wikimedia[edit]

You might want to keep in mind that the logs of Wikimedia are "forever", so it's best to be careful when typing in edit summaries and reasons that go in logs that people will be able to read well into the future. [5] :)

(Yes, I know, I used the bastardized "Literal" quote style rather than traditional British quoting style.) Kylu 23:22, 25 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Deo Volente[edit]

Ok! How about this? I make more simple. Mikhailov Kusserow (talk) 06:27, 29 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Welcoming users isn't the problem, but please try to welcome users that actually edit Meta wiki. There are over 6000 global accounts created everyday and about a 1000 max may unify to Meta, welcoming each and everyone is really going to be tiresome and boring.. ..thanks :) ..--Cometstyles 06:30, 29 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

my page was deleted[edit]

Why my page was deleted? I just had a small curriculum as I have seen from other users. How I can have a page like them?

As I want to participate in WikiBrasil Metting, I thougt I was important to have information over there as others have under the title user:Haroldovilhena

Thanks for yor attention and time,

hmm OK, I'll restore but pliz do not add any external link to some other website...--Cometstyles 22:05, 30 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This doesn't seem to work. I changed it from Commons to the Wikipedia version at Wikinews here n:MediaWiki:Gadget-HotCat.js and that made it work over there. The only thing to modify is the shortcut which will start appearing in edit summaries. Perhaps you could try stealing that version? Cirt (talk) 01:33, 4 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ok done, poke me if it needs fixing :p ..--Cometstyles 01:45, 4 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Now all that's left to do is fix the short cut thing in the edit summary, see this diff. Cirt (talk) 09:22, 4 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yay, that did it, thank you! Cirt (talk) 09:38, 4 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Protection?[edit]

Not working (? Seems like you protected twice. As I've just done (I thought) Commons I was checking here too. Cheers --Herby talk thyme 10:28, 6 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

heh, yeah, maybe something is wrong O_O..--Cometstyles 10:32, 6 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Bother :) I've done a few that "arrived" on Commons anyway, just in case. Might look at a range block later. Cheers --Herby talk thyme 10:35, 6 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please do not yell at me in a subsection heading[edit]

Stop it!!! - Please do not choose subsection headings like that in the future. It is not constructive and does not encourage a positive dialogue between users in a polite and congenial atmosphere. Cirt (talk) 11:18, 6 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

well you should have asked the community first before doing something and if this is about Meta:MetaProject to Overhaul Meta then you are going about it wrongly, yes we would like to have everything well categorised, but creating more redundant categories will just cause headache for editors in the future, and categorising on an yearly basis is a good idea, but categorising it independently for each candidate isn't ...--Cometstyles 11:26, 6 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well to start out - whenever anyone starts out a subsection heading inappropriately like that, it is not likely that the discussion following will be a positive, polite, and generally constructive one between the users involved. It does not facilitate community or inspire users to want to be helpful or contribute. Cirt (talk) 11:28, 6 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for blocking him. Was creating havock on the simple wikibooks wiki wasnt able to get to the meta webpage intime to request temp sysop to block the arsehole. 69.89.25.199 11:22, 12 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Article on New City School[edit]

I see that you have deleted the article I am trying to submit on New City School.

New City School is probably the best known Multiple Intelligence school in the world. It is cited in other Wikipedia articles. I tried to mimic the format of other famous schools like The Lab School in Chicago.

Can you tell me why the article was deleted? Am I doing it the wrong way or in the wrong place?

Dahven White

Wrong place, please read our Inclusion policy..--Cometstyles 02:43, 20 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I believe I posted to the same place as other schools like the Lab School and John Burroughs. But I am having a very hard time getting around. Am I mistaken?

Request for global JavaScript[edit]

Hello Cometstyles. You now have global JavaScript on most wikis using global.js (see discussion and logs of changes & skips). —Pathoschild 09:47:21, 21 November 2008 (UTC)

Wikispecies[edit]

Sorry to have to bother you, but I need some advice on how to handle our latest admin on Wikispecies. Looks as if he is already turning rogue. I have tried to stay mellow, but that is increasingly difficult. I think the nomination came too early and the user has a hidden personal agenda. How should I proceed, if at all? Regards. Main page edit[edit]

To answer the question you posed, it appears that Anonymous Dissident removed the IRC links. See diff 1170030. Hope that helps. Kylu 06:01, 11 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

yes I knew who did it, checked the history beforehand..it is what we call sarcasm ^_^ ..--Cometstyles 06:34, 11 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sarcasm? I'll have to look that up on one of those internet encyclopedia things later, I suspect. Thanks for the heads up. Kylu 23:32, 12 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Material for the spam blacklist[edit]

I am seeing that Wikimedia Meta is being overrun with external links in an effort to spam our community from a commercial site. I suggest immediate blacklisting, and probably a perma-ban on User:Mutante. 12,144 links! It is shockingly viral. Oh, there are also 8 links doing incredible damage, too. Here is a Google reference for more information that may be appropriate for your work. -- Thekohser 05:11, 22 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Here's another example of a user gratuitously adding an external link to a commercially self-interested site. I suggest a month-long block. -- Thekohser 05:27, 22 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, but I don't think you really know what spamming is, do you ?.. well spamming is adding links to sites on any wikimedia wikis that we do not care about and which are annoying, irritating, self-promotional, absurd or typically you and the Google reference, right back at ya ..--Cometstyles 10:59, 22 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
"...that we do not care about..." Interesting, that you seem to speak for the community. I wonder why Sir Fozzie, and Giano II, and Ryan Postlethwait, and Krimpet, and Alison, and Lar, and Geoff Wilson (all prominent Wikipedians) found it worth their time to visit and register and edit upon MyWikiBiz, if they "do not care about" it. You're fully engorged on the Wikia Kool-Aid, I guess. The media has been notified of this. We'll see how it plays out. -- Thekohser 11:45, 22 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You're not jealous of MyWikiBiz's notability, are you? I hope that's not it, because that would be awfully shallow. Anyway, I have added myself to the ranks of the "Anti-Spam CrimeFighter" team, of which you are also a member, apparently. I've even started my very own link watchlist! I'm not just going to go in and start cutting these links down. Their viral nature needs to be studied carefully, first. -- Thekohser 15:09, 22 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well, well, well. You're capable of getting the point sometimes, after all. Nicely done. -- Thekohser 03:04, 23 December 2008 (UTC) --Yuqing liu (talk) 00:30, 28 December 2017 (UTC)Bold text'[reply]
